  • Very nice man. Enjoyed it !

  • When I finally settle down I hope I have neighbors like you.

  • Give me goosebumps hearing this. Thanks!

  • wonderful! The singing is a nice touch!

  • Thanks forthis... I am working out a version of this on my banjo... Sounds pretty good here!

  • what key is it in?Id like to learn it on guitar, and maybe if I knew what key it was in I could figure it out because I cant find any guitar tabs for it.

  • Nice song, whats the tuning?

    Thanks

  • DGCD (called "mountain minor" tuning)

  • beautiful clawhammer - I haven't brought out my banjo in a few years, and I think its time to become reaquainted. I like the thought of nylon strings - wire bites in deep, to be sure. I couldn't afford a ready made banjo, so I bought a kit (wow - almost 30 years ago). Never cared for bluegrass, really like the mountain sound. Thank you for posting this vid. Excellent.

  • good old time banjo thanks

  • I love that sound. Those are nylon strings aren't they?

I am classical guitar player who wants to put nylon strings on a 5-string banjo and see what can be done. Steel strings catch my nails whenever I play.

How do I do a conversion. Would a resonator be advisable?

    J.

  • Yes... these are nylon strings on my mountain banjo. I am not sure how they would work on a regular 5-string banjo. You would just have to try. It would be better with an open-back 5 string (no resonator) Nylon strings for a 5-string banjo are not easy to come by... I use "Labella" nylon banjo strings from E.&O. Mari inc.

    Good luck

  • There's also something called Aquila Nylgut, a kind of artificial gut, available in a formulation for minstrel banjo (low-pitched) and regular (what you want). Two sources are Elderly Instruments in Michigan and Zepp's Country Music in North Carolina.

  • Nylguts are great on anything lowtech or old; gourds, mountain banjos and openbacks with thin pots and sound especaialy great in combo with a real skin head.( I have them on my 1898 S.S.Stewart and mountain banjo)

rip the resonator(if there is one) off and try them on realy cheap crappy imports, old Kays and the like. You might be surprised a the very convincing "oldtimey" plunk you get.

  • Nice old time playing. Banjo sounds great. Thanks for sharing.
