@SDRockman well as he says, not all labels are bad. Also keep in mind that record labels have more often than not been high-risk, low-return businesses. Labels front money to bands to record and promote an album, but if sales are bad (e.g., too many illegal downloads), both the band AND the label are in the red.
As for Apple/iTunes, they just get the licensing to do the on-line purchase translations. They're not the ones who get to decide how that 99 cents gets split up.
