I have this program and I keep hovering over all kinds of things in newspapers, magazines, even movie posters and nothing ever happens. The only one that ever worked for me was the $20 bill.
@lesliekwan80 I didn't say it's fake. I said the video seems pre-recorded. I'm not saying this technology cannot existing. I'm saying the app reacts so quickly as if it already knew what it was supposed to be searching for. I'm saying the video doesn't react e same way as e movement. I'm sorry u grew up not being able to accept that other people has different views and u have to insult them. It must be hard growing up knowing that the world works so differently than how ur brain can comprehend.
@ha2pals You are right!! These clips have to be downloaded first, before they work. What they demonstrate, in my opinion, is fraud. They give the impression that it just works when you view any item through the window, and that's NOT how it works! It involves a lot of downloads and linkings and a lot of unnecessary stuff for such a novelty app.
@ha2pals My opinion is that this app should be avoided until future gains in its applicability without soooo much user input!!! It's like driving a car in Bedrock, ya know, like Fred Flintstone, you have to use your feet for the engine...lol
The video above was a fake created before the real application was built. Autonomy / Lynch are riding the backs of the industry that came before it. Besides which, their platform is totally dull, doesn't deliver on the full spectrum of augmented reality applications and is giving the industry a bad name. Good luck to them though . hahaha.
I've seen the demo work with my own eyes (this video is not faked) and like people say below the Android version is available also. The use case scenarios for this are endless though .. advertisement comes to mind, but also entertainment and tourism for instance .. let your imagination go wild. I dig it.
@tubemoron it could be real - but the fact is this video's fake. What he's showing on the iPhone is NOT linked to the camera because it's showing two different pictures.
It's on the app store for free but its hit and miss. Android won't see this considering it's platform is so loose and slapped together. Idc if I get 3D maps or a dual core CPU. Cause in reality no one cares. :D
@petbar et al... Please watch the 6 o'clock news on the BBC tonight (31st May) for even more proof that this is real, bona fide, non-fake technology. That is if you didn't believe all the other press coverage, and the fact that you can get it on the itunes store... sheesh!
nice made fake cus when he moves away the camera dont show the moving it shows still the object or the iphone is so slow that u can move it and see still the old picture
The product might be real. this video isn't. the image on the screen is as if the camera is coming straight to the image, where as the camera actually comes from the side.
Ok technical delivery of a single strand of image recognition - but this has been done by industry giants Total Immersion, Junaio, and a host of others, including some of Cambridge's own. This is not an AR platform/browser. There is no 3D, no location aware elements, no advance natural feature tracking, etc. Also, perhaps most importantly, there is no monetisation strategy attached. My assessment...take it or leave it
@tubemoron@MrAgelessStranger Misappropriating assets from one corporation to another is fraud, copying IP and trade secrets and business models is illegal too. Let's hope that has not occurred. I expect the Aurasma legal team will be very busy the next few years. :) As for the technology, I will provide a full analysis on testing the product comprehensively, but what I'll say so far: this is built on third party augmented reality browsers. So my comments stand.
@FangedFreak please read the comments below. Boone is saying that it's not possible, it's just this demo video is a fake/proof of concept. If that's true about your sisters, it'd be awesome if they jump on here to comment.
So the camera in the iPhone is snapping a still image and uploading it to the web...where servers "look" at the image and search to come up with the reality augmentation "hit". This video is then delivered to the device and played...as a movie. All quicker than any Youtube video has ever been downloaded in the history of mankind. Yeah, right. This is NOT a demo. It is a mock up POC. Still very cool. Once you got tired of cornflakes I suppose you are SOL. But the porn use case is awesome.
What I am saying is: there is no way in hell Autonomy independently came up with their own mobile AR tech platform that is up-to-speed with all of their competitors (Total Immersion, Junaio, Layar, Wikitude, etc). If they had, they'd be showing something MUCH different than the demo above. Any developer in this field would tell you this. That's all.
@MaidenFan09 I am sure you saw 'something', as in a working AR tech platform already in existence matching to images/a marker, but the demo shown above, the 'Proof of Concept' for Aurasma a 'fake' product demo. Why? It isn't unique, real, or even working correctly. If they'd been working on it since Oct 2010, the AR dev community would expect to see MUCH more than an obviously cobbled together range of existing tech. I agree it's possible, mobile AR has been around since mid 2009, so agreed!!
To any others who doubt this: Google for "aurasma cnet" and "aurasma nyt" - these are independent press articles that have verified the technology. The C|Net article includes a 10-minute interview with Autonomy's CEO Mike Lynch and discusses the technology in depth.
If you doubt these demos, read the press articles.
@MaidenFan09 Listened to all the press around this & yes, Larry admits he saw working AR tech, but without an expert developer eye, you wouldn't know you were looking at existing AR technologies thrown together to make a proof of concept'.
@MaidenFan09 Just to clarify, read all of these, again - same story as before: these guys did see something. But not a real demo. Endgaget even comments on it. Google it. Then look up AR basketball and total immersion's augmented reality video. You'll see what I mean. That's what folks are seeing. :)
To any interested stakeholders: the aurasma app demo here is truly fake: comprised of several existing AR technologies & is not even close to a full working demo. Requests for beta, or real app demos are yet to be seen by ANYONE other than a controlled group of journalists vetted by the organisation. The "tech" was also demoed at MipTV a few days before this video was released (taken down, but you can get cached version) & the reality that it doesn't really exist was even more apparent.
@lucybazooka believe me, this is NOT fake technology. I have seen this working independently in private, and can personally verify that it works. I am an ex-Autonomy employee (I left the company at the end of March this year).
Autonomy as a company protect their IP very closely, much like another technology company beginning with "A" - commercial secrets are very powerful in this industry, and while what we've seen here is a "proof of concept", the concept is extremely real and very possible.
@ms7m fake or not.... NY Times wrote about it. if they heard about it and said that will be launched next month, I don't think is fake: bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/04/07/augmented-reality-comes-closer-to-reality/
About that box...inside your screen you see animation, so the phone could read just the name from the box and reproduce another box in the screen, exactly as you see an advertisement on tv...
@ms7m it would capture the whole thing from a height of about 20cm. The video makers might have recreated the effect in After Effects / Final Cut etc for convenience's sake, but the principle of the VR technology is the point of the story and that is totally possible.
@MaidenFan09 IDOL is backend software, from a backend software company. Don't you find it odd that Autonomy suddenly put 2+2 together? Mobile? A first for them. Augmented Reality? A bit cutting edge for these dinosaurs.
@ogdini IDOL as a platform is an extremely broad bit of kit, so it's understandable that they're only now putting it into the Augmented Reality realm. I'm not that well-versed with IDOL as a platform (I was working on the back-end, ironically enough, so I didn't really have much/anything to do with it) but I know enough to have a great amount of respect for the company and what IDOL can do. Augmented Reality is a showpiece, but it can have/has got a hell of a lot more under the bonnet as well.
@MaidenFan09 Hey Craig - so cool, just checked you out on your channel - Galileo rocks but I can't wait to see Discovery! Cool blog. Try me at tracyfalke@gmail.com
@MaidenFan09 Hey MaidenFan09!!! How cool is that? So you actually played with the demo? When? When's it due to be out? They must have been working on it for ages...
As I said before, Autonomy would be in BIG trouble if they were promoting a technology that isn't real. As a PLC this kind of press release could affect share prices - an increase in share prices based on a hoax or fake technology would lead to senior execs going to jail etc... and I'm sure they're not that stupid! To the doubters - you're the kind of folk who laughed at Copernicus for saying the world isn't flat! If you still don't believe it, apply to be a beta tester...
for all of you ignorant dummies saying this is fake... all you gotta do is google "augmented reality" and you'll find that this technology has been around for a while. It uses the camera to capture a "marker" which then displays any media the author decides...
The only thing I don't understand, why would I want to buy a paper instead of reading/watching straight from my phone/Ipad? and why would i want to watch advertising of the products in the supermarket?
It could be a fake? check this video on New York Times out and pay attention to right before he hovers over the Eminem video, the video launch is completely out of sync! Amazing hoax. Will go down in history if so ....
@TracyFalke I was an employee at Autonomy and had this demo'd to me while I was working there. The underlying software (IDOL) is insanely clever, and I really believe they are a game-changer in the advertising industry. Those who say that this is fake - take my word for it, it's very real.
@MaidenFan09 Hey Craig - so cool, just checked you out on your channel - Galileo rocks but I can't wait to see Discovery! Cool blog. So, I'm an armchair techie and blogger myself, so you'll have to forgive me for questions! When did you see this demo? How long has it taken them to develop? Can we email? Try me at tracyfalke@gmail.com
Everyone, Autonomy is a FTSE 100 company, and the biggest software company in the UK, not some geek in his bedroom posting a fake video. This tech is very real - a FTSE 100 company would be ripped apart if this was fake!
@larrymagid Why don;t they EVER keep the handset in view between scenes? It is very strange how they take the phone away every time. Until i see that it is a demo app, not a functioning application. The technology is nothing new Junaio, Popcode, etc.
i doubt a picture scanner can find the video with the photos in it, because most photos are never in videos, so how can you make a picture virtual without the video?
it's either fake or an advanced augmented reality app with custom markers - video overlays - 3d animation - it's really the markers that make it jump out from the other AR apps out there. - now if he's doing some sort of "Google Goggles" scanning algorithm and calling up dynamic marker from a database type of stuff then that's a whole other level of coolness :) fake or kick ass - idk
@larrymagid Hi Larry, we're very excited about new applications in this field as well.
But a few questions as you are one of the few to see it face to face: Did you see the full working demo from start to finish on the handset? Where did you get this particular demo video? It's issued from Autonomy I assume, as it has their logo on the right? We'd love to chat with you about the different technologies that appear to have been implemented in this demo above.
@larrymagid But Larry, are you SURE of what you saw? Please tell us to put this bed. Did you see them launch the app? Were there any launch screens? Did they fiddle with the phone between? Did they have an orchestrated demo? Did you play with it yourself? When you were hovering over it and then moved the phone away, did the images/content dissolve? All very interesting forms of letting us know what the app is actually capable of!
This video is definitely fake. Watch closely. Notice how he yanks the iphone off screen real fast every time. Note that the video doesn't reflect this movement.
Now as a proof of concept this video demonstration is fine.
@TracyFalke Seen it, it works and it's fast and interactive. Newspapers and advertising is just the tip of the iceberg. No codes required, and it tracks objects at different angles in real-time.
when the phone is in view 100% of the time i will believe it.. 1st 2 videos.. thick black lines around indicating it's not Natural Feature Tracking (AR). THIS IS A FAKE.
Great so now instead of ads being in the background where they can be ignored I can take my smartphone and sit in front of the ads and be forced to watch a video.
This is actually pretty cool. Though, I don't understand why you'd be reading a newspaper when you have a smartphone...or the internet for that matter.

@MaidenFan09 The tech is going to be awesome when it arrives. Where did you see it? Did you play with it yourself?
TracyFalke 11 months ago

This video was supplied by Autonomy.
Everyone, Autonomy is a FTSE 100 company, and the biggest software company in the UK, not some geek in his bedroom posting a fake video. This tech is very real - a FTSE 100 company would be ripped apart if this was fake!
tubemoron 11 months ago
@larrymagid Why don;t they EVER keep the handset in view between scenes? It is very strange how they take the phone away every time. Until i see that it is a demo app, not a functioning application. The technology is nothing new Junaio, Popcode, etc.

the movement of the video, doesn't match the movement of his hand. enough said.

i doubt a picture scanner can find the video with the photos in it, because most photos are never in videos, so how can you make a picture virtual without the video?
thekillerz12345 11 months ago
I got that on my MyTouch 4G
IxXZODXxI 11 months ago
it's either fake or an advanced augmented reality app with custom markers - video overlays - 3d animation - it's really the markers that make it jump out from the other AR apps out there.

TracyFalke 11 months ago
@larrymagid yeah, you saw that FAKE with your own eyes...
Boostmax1196 11 months ago
@larrymagid But Larry, are you SURE of what you saw? Please tell us to put this bed. Did you see them launch the app? Were there any launch screens? Did they fiddle with the phone between? Did they have an orchestrated demo? Did you play with it yourself? When you were hovering over it and then moved the phone away, did the images/content dissolve? All very interesting forms of letting us know what the app is actually capable of!

This video is definitely fake. Watch closely. Notice how he yanks the iphone off screen real fast every time. Note that the video doesn't reflect this movement.
Now as a proof of concept this video demonstration is fine.
upsallysskirt 11 months ago
@upsallysskirt YOU'RE SO SO RIGHT. Fake. It's a combination of programs cobbled together to get a fast PoC out. Wonder why they had to do that? Hmmm.
TracyFalke 11 months ago
@TracyFalke Seen it, it works and it's fast and interactive. Newspapers and advertising is just the tip of the iceberg. No codes required, and it tracks objects at different angles in real-time.
benbennit 11 months ago
@benbennit Cool!!! Did you actually get to handle the app yourself? See what I asked Larry above? Very curious about advancements.

Great so now instead of ads being in the background where they can be ignored I can take my smartphone and sit in front of the ads and be forced to watch a video.
