I am in the process of recording an entire Shawn Lane lesson series, over 10 videos. It's going to have a few excerpts from this song. Check out my profile and show some support so I know people are into this.
No, you just don't 'get it'. Granted, I'll freely admit that pomp is in play with some people who like 'certain kind' of music, but in the case of Shawn Lane, there is very credible, objective virtuosity there. I'm kind of tiring of the dumb sentiment, that "music" is some stupid 'race to sincerity' between old black bluesmen and no-technique folk singers. That kind of music is fine, but it isn't any more or less credible than what Shawn Lane does. It's just simpler.
Unfortunately, this discussion is just way too in-depth for a youtube debate. Here's a summary. Your view on Shawn Lane is derived from your 'not understanding' certain things abut music, and perhaps some life experience where you encountered music-snobs who were just as clueless as you, but thought because they listened to stuff like this, it made them better. Your life experience is credible. I agree with that, but your musical insight is worthless.
I'm new to Shawn's music and this is an absolutely gorgeous piece. I absolutely love this.
Question to other folks. When Shawn started to play his distorted lines, did anyone think Allan Holdsworth inspired? Was Holdsworth a guitar hero of Shawn's?
I think shawn seeing allan holdsworth live, who wasn't too famous at the time, is what made him see the guitar differently, it wasn't just a rock instrument anymore, but an instrument itself.
@JJJJay Holdsworth was very much an idol of Shawn's - here are a couple of clips; the first one is Shawn explaining how he first heard Allan, and the second is the two conversing:
@GuitarGuy84XX I'm sure it looked like a normal fretboard. i wonder what he was thinking while playing. if you look at his mouth sometimes when he plays faster stuff or a weird rhythmic phrase he's counting. i like your state of mind though man. cool comment.
@HorusHeresy50 Shawn Lane and Jonas were very much influenced by Indian Music. They recorded CDs called "Icon" and one called "Good People in Times of Evil" with Indian musicians.
For all the myriad guitarists that can play fast, few have showcased their speed as innately as Shawn Lane. Fewer still can play so gracefully at such speeds and yet it's such a small facet of Shawn's musicianship. Amazing!
@Luckysingh1guitarist . They do mention Shawn- John Petrucci said he used to watch tapes of Shawn playing to try and figure stuff out while Dream Theater were on tour. Paul Gilbert has talked about him. Eric Johnson etc etc... the list goes on. Also, Shawn Lane was an admirer of BucketHead and vice versa. RIP Shawn.
This was a great event and I am humbled by the amount of views this video has garnered....That was my store back in the day. Thanks to whoever taped the concert.
I always enjoyed hosting great players in the back of the shop....RIP ADP
It is amazing how every shawn lane video seems to generate only positive feedback, it occurs to me that on the entirety of youtube every video has a battle underneath it but under all of Shawn's only intelligent discussions of his genius take place. His music is a magnet for the celebration of life
he had the ability to create anything he wanted with sound. Pure self expression. No holding back, just what is in his mind. He was a true master. It seems that people like this inevitabally die young
i starting to think that theres a reason great guitarist an musical writers are passing away or getting disease's like becker. Maybe it just the way of the world saying its not time for another composer with the skills of bach mozart beethover or paganini
@matt921 I think the universe strives for balence. If you have geniuses like Lane, Hendrix, Becker and now Govan, it upsets the naturel balence of human life because they are so beyond what a normal human is capable of doing.
Shawn Lane, particularly this period, give me chills. This whole show is awesome. A very sad and tragic figure though. I wish he was still with us. And, I am convinced Hellborg is the one who brought the best out of him.
I can't stop listening to Shawn Lane. Its ALL I do now. I am a pianist but I can't stop listening to his guitar pieces. I think because he played piano and well everything that his works are very orchestrated. Really rich and musical. With a lot to learn from listening. Thanks for posting all these vids.
what a lovely piece of guitar work...such a shame cut short like most pure genius's....and p.s why do people dis respect these great talents with comparing and debating...i didnt look up this vid for a debate i just wanted to listen to some heaven sent guitar work...rip shawn, stevie, jimi and all the crew. the great dont die young they are hand picked.
I agree just beautiful beautiful flowing melodic music...love the Indian sounding intro and fast glissando notes... while listening I was thinking he's "out -McLaughlin'ing" John McLaughlin and "out -Vai'ing" Steve Vai. Wow! Brilliant playing, flawless!
It was just something Shawn would play live at most gigs around that time, at least the basic theme anyway, though he would improvise it different each time.
Yeah it was me who collected those over the years, edited them, and uploaded them..... on the Petrucci forum. Someone obviously either just used my links, or downloaded them and reuploaded them themselves.
Be sure to download the "Shawn with PoT Band - South End, Memphis - 12th Dec 1992" gig..... simply because that was a MEGA rare gig, that only a few people in the world had a copy of on dvd..... i paid a total of $135 just to get hold of a copy (talk about 'hoarders hell')... then i converted it to audio, split it into tracks, and uploaded it for anyone to download for free.
There were a few bits of footage used for the REH vids..... if you check in the video info for any of the clips from the REH vids on my account, you'll see where i typed up a big detailed explanation of which footage was used.
What's amazing is how he can tune his guitar and play that solo at the same time without effort. Just that he can even hear that in the maelstrom of his playing.
