  • imagine if Frank and Shawn shared the stage? Wow! FZ would have loved Shawn.

  • I am in the process of recording an entire Shawn Lane lesson series, over 10 videos. It's going to have a few excerpts from this song. Check out my profile and show some support so I know people are into this.

  • Wow.....his guitar can sing better than any vocalist I've ever heard!!!

  • @Matthewkilb

No, you just don't 'get it'. Granted, I'll freely admit that pomp is in play with some people who like 'certain kind' of music, but in the case of Shawn Lane, there is very credible, objective virtuosity there. I'm kind of tiring of the dumb sentiment, that "music" is some stupid 'race to sincerity' between old black bluesmen and no-technique folk singers. That kind of music is fine, but it isn't any more or less credible than what Shawn Lane does. It's just simpler.

  • Shawn chokes me up the way Jimi does. if listen to this before 10 am I will cry for the entire thing.. starting at about 1:40

    Jesus man... freaky talent

  • @TerraDigitalMedia Really? I mean, I see the talent, but damn.

  • i don't get it D: inferior technique . . . superior player, the man lives in a world of his own

that's why none of the next gen super guitarists can come close

although i do fucking love john petrucci

  • @celiasarron i hate trendy comments like this

  • @celiasarron Amen bro!! Amen!!

  • @vetmusician No..........not really........LOL

  • I get chills from this, and all of Shawns stuff. Makes me want to kick death right in the nuts.

  • Just Sublime....Màna of jazz (Also Zappa ;)

  • I'm born this day. :/

  • Wonderful, just wow.

  • looks like zach galafanakis with greased down hair.

  • Musical talent is one thing...musical intelligence as exhibited by Lane is quite another.

Holdsworth + Lane are the the undisputed virtuosos of the electric guitar.

  • I'm new to Shawn's music and this is an absolutely gorgeous piece. I absolutely love this.

Question to other folks. When Shawn started to play his distorted lines, did anyone think Allan Holdsworth inspired? Was Holdsworth a guitar hero of Shawn's?

    Thank you for sharing this!

  • @JJJJay

I think shawn seeing allan holdsworth live, who wasn't too famous at the time, is what made him see the guitar differently, it wasn't just a rock instrument anymore, but an instrument itself.

  • @JJJJay Holdsworth was very much an idol of Shawn's - here are a couple of clips; the first one is Shawn explaining how he first heard Allan, and the second is the two conversing:

    /watch?v=oOFQKzQLGU8#t=1m57s

    /watch?v=4waVFBbOwis

  • FUCK! Why did he have to die?! :(

  • There is Shawn and then everybody else. Definitely the best guitarist ever hands down.

  • I DARE someone to try to tab that improv at the beginning

  • @thenamedone1

    I'm working on it

  • Spectacular!

  • I love this theme.

  • Wow I didn't Brian Blessed could play guitar like that. I was only looking for a clip of him in flash gordon! =) Seriously great guitar

  • @GuitarGuy84XX I'm sure it looked like a normal fretboard. i wonder what he was thinking while playing. if you look at his mouth sometimes when he plays faster stuff or a weird rhythmic phrase he's counting. i like your state of mind though man. cool comment.

  • truly one of the guitar legends ever lived...

  • whos that drummer???

  • @distortionpf

Jeff Sipe I believe, extremely good drummer.

  • @djziggurat ok thanks

  • 2:20 : makes me think of traditional indian music, funny !!

  • @HorusHeresy50 Shawn Lane and Jonas were very much influenced by Indian Music. They recorded CDs called "Icon" and one called "Good People in Times of Evil" with Indian musicians.

  • @nickwellings correct, although this was before they got into the indian music

  • theres no way he cant be the best player ever

  • This world wasn't good enough for you Shawn :(

  • Man do I miss Shawn. We are all poorer for losing him.

  • this dude is a god at guitar and steve via is like his son dragon force is pretty fast but not as fast as him

  • huh...never realized god played an orange guitar.

  • Mindblowing

  • oh i never knew he's dead

  • For all the myriad guitarists that can play fast, few have showcased their speed as innately as Shawn Lane. Fewer still can play so gracefully at such speeds and yet it's such a small facet of Shawn's musicianship. Amazing!

  • This is raaga hamsadwani in its pure state.....pure genius

  • @GuitarGuy84XX I guess he didn't pay attention to it at all, I think Shawn was just focusing on the sounds in his head :)

  • @oscarsstuff I'm pretty sure that it's like "A Beautiful Mind" and what he plays comes right at him, so he can see through the music.

  • Not to forget Sipe was/is one of the finest drummers you can ever wish to hear

  • why is jonas hellborg dressed like a pirate?

  • @magicsam47 I think a better wuestion would be, Why aren't we all wearing pirate costumes

  • Iv'e just noticed how much he looks like Brian Blessed in these videos.

  • @MegaYoshitsune

    He bloody does actually haha.

  • i thought i knew what fast guitar was until i saw this guy play

  • I was at this show, I also videotaped the whole thing. Unfortunatly my vid was from the back of the room and nowhere near this quality......

  • shawn lane is ultimate

  • is their an mp3 of this anywhere?

  • Dude, you rule for posting these vids. They're precious documentation of rare artist.

  • It really is a pleasure to listen to this man play.

  • OH MY GOD, HE MUST HAVE EATEN BUCKETHEAD

  • i wanted to say something about what i feel when i listen this song but it's impossible. Words alone cannot describe it.

    Willjay, thanks, and thanks again

  • i JUST KNEW it had to be true! you REALLY CAN play a zillion notes AND say something! the "technic" vs "soul" debate has been ANSWERED!

  • no doubt, one of the greatest of all time.

  • apparently piano was his first instrument :-0

  • @Luckysingh1guitarist . They do mention Shawn- John Petrucci said he used to watch tapes of Shawn playing to try and figure stuff out while Dream Theater were on tour. Paul Gilbert has talked about him. Eric Johnson etc etc... the list goes on. Also, Shawn Lane was an admirer of BucketHead and vice versa. RIP Shawn.

  • This was a great event and I am humbled by the amount of views this video has garnered....That was my store back in the day. Thanks to whoever taped the concert.

I always enjoyed hosting great players in the back of the shop....RIP ADP

  • magnificent

  • @GuitarGuy84XX

the fretboard should look exactly like the music you have in your head and heart...

  • The drummer looks like Alan Hollsworth, and sounds like his drummer ??

  • not an easy job for the drummer.. such free flowing music, hes the one making sense of it all in a way

  • @BelieveIntheBucket it's not a job to him. Just playing and jamming.

  • It is amazing how every shawn lane video seems to generate only positive feedback, it occurs to me that on the entirety of youtube every video has a battle underneath it but under all of Shawn's only intelligent discussions of his genius take place. His music is a magnet for the celebration of life

  • @pakalthegr8 what this guy said!

  • @pakalthegr8 now that you've metioned it, i dont think i've saw a negative comment on a shawn lane video either

  • he had the ability to create anything he wanted with sound. Pure self expression. No holding back, just what is in his mind. He was a true master. It seems that people like this inevitabally die young

  • I never get tired of this... Musical medicine, but careful not to get addicted... ;)

  • Everybody, who does not agree that Shawn Lane was better than him, is lying

  • speed and taste. not just a shredder for sure. respect!

  • He has what I would call a "direct connection".

    This is other-worldly.

  • @jwandhistools yep, I totally agree. When you shine this bright, i don't think you are meant for this earth

  • The best guitar player ever. Period.

  • at 3:00 he looks like he was awaken from his dream, and back to this world

    amazing performance

  • A true virtuoso - a genius - gone .... Only one guitarist remains that is even close to him - Buckethead.

  • @FLFCH I think Govan is next up

  • @hellookelly Yep

  • 1:53 wich scale was that????????

  • @supermanche they SOUND like minor pentatonic. thats just a guess

  • @GuitarGuy84XX Thanks for the "thanks"! :-) .... Interesting question!

  • i starting to think that theres a reason great guitarist an musical writers are passing away or getting disease's like becker. Maybe it just the way of the world saying its not time for another composer with the skills of bach mozart beethover or paganini

  • @matt921 I think the universe strives for balence. If you have geniuses like Lane, Hendrix, Becker and now Govan, it upsets the naturel balence of human life because they are so beyond what a normal human is capable of doing.

  • i just love this performance so much. rip

  • rest in peace...

  • This guy just screams live life to the fullest now.

    Thanks Willjay.

  • @ExtremeBogom Thanks for the "thanks"... it's appreciated mate!!

  • jesus h... RIP shawn lane. you are seriously missed....

  • Shawn Lane, particularly this period, give me chills. This whole show is awesome. A very sad and tragic figure though. I wish he was still with us. And, I am convinced Hellborg is the one who brought the best out of him.

  • if anybody wants to download whole concert of this phenomenal guitarist (Live from Paris 2001) you can download it here:

  • sweet

  • His tone is like warm plastic, and that delay, you'd have to plug your guitar into existence to have it so perfect.

  • I hear the rumor that his tone is straight from his fingers.

  • I have this DVD, it is my personal favorite trio of all time. The whole band is superb.

  • @Vakinar where can you get it?

  • It would take too long to explain how much I love Shawn's music.

  • 3:15 - 3:22 so goooood

  • hell ya dude that parts sweet almost sounds like theres no harmony

  • oh man soooo incedible

  • my dream began at 0:52

  • 3:00 enter in a dream

  • I can't stop listening to Shawn Lane. Its ALL I do now. I am a pianist but I can't stop listening to his guitar pieces. I think because he played piano and well everything that his works are very orchestrated. Really rich and musical. With a lot to learn from listening. Thanks for posting all these vids.

  • wow ...total zone at 5:19 one of the greatest moments of guitar playing ever IMO

  • what kind of amp did he use... i know the guitar is a vigier

  • what a lovely piece of guitar work...such a shame cut short like most pure genius's....and p.s why do people dis respect these great talents with comparing and debating...i didnt look up this vid for a debate i just wanted to listen to some heaven sent guitar work...rip shawn, stevie, jimi and all the crew. the great dont die young they are hand picked.

  • well put.

  • 1:34 - 1:44 sounds heavenly.

  • such a unique use of the trem

  • THIS....IS....MELTING MY MIND...

i havent gotten this excited for a guitar video in a long time lol

  • I agree just beautiful beautiful flowing melodic music...love the Indian sounding intro and fast glissando notes... while listening I was thinking he's "out -McLaughlin'ing" John McLaughlin and "out -Vai'ing" Steve Vai. Wow! Brilliant playing, flawless!

  • This is just surreal and blissful music

  • The improv at the beginning is the intro to the studio version of Rice With The Angels!

  • Not exactly the same, just a similar sound.

It was just something Shawn would play live at most gigs around that time, at least the basic theme anyway, though he would improvise it different each time.

  • hey i found this site that posted 50 shawn lane bootlegs thatr sound pro quality its so sick

  • Yeah it was me who collected those over the years, edited them, and uploaded them..... on the Petrucci forum. Someone obviously either just used my links, or downloaded them and reuploaded them themselves.

  • i should have figuered that. thanks!

  • No problemo... hope you enjoyed them!

Be sure to download the "Shawn with PoT Band - South End, Memphis - 12th Dec 1992" gig..... simply because that was a MEGA rare gig, that only a few people in the world had a copy of on dvd..... i paid a total of $135 just to get hold of a copy (talk about 'hoarders hell')... then i converted it to audio, split it into tracks, and uploaded it for anyone to download for free.

  • hey do you know which show was used for the reh video? i think thats the best ive seen out of the pot vids.

  • There were a few bits of footage used for the REH vids..... if you check in the video info for any of the clips from the REH vids on my account, you'll see where i typed up a big detailed explanation of which footage was used.

    Hope that helps.

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos

wow. As someone who visits your page a lot, I just wanted to give a big thanks!!

  • Goody for U. Now how about you post the link! Alot of good this piece of news does the rest of us.

  • Oh all the vids I've seen of Shawn, (which would be virtually all of them) this is my absolute favorite. Really primo stuff

  • What's amazing is how he can tune his guitar and play that solo at the same time without effort. Just that he can even hear that in the maelstrom of his playing.

  • very nice melodic and smooth. I've watched several other vids and the wacky trills give me a a headache but this is much better, very nice.

  • my imagination is back

  • So typical that he had to die, such talent and improv skills...

  • @maacan It's like Jason Becker. Such talent taken at such a young age.

  • shawn IS the best, no competition

  • this is one of the most peaceful and calm solos ive ever heard! Shawn, you were the most talented guitar player ive seen in quite some time! may you rest well brother...

  • Amen to that Ito

This solo sounds shivers down my spine.

  • My friend turned me on to him and I am realizing how special he was. The drummer needs to chill a little though.

  • what can i say, the video speaks for itself

  • Very nice why do the good ones have to go when they have so much to give??

  • its almost like a curse, all the really really good musicians almost seem to have to choose between good health or extreme musical skills. i dont understand it myself... imagine how amazing shawn would be today!!!

  • shivas christmas!!! what more can you say!!! euphoric!!!

  • Hey Shawn...I know you hear this from heaven: thanks man!

  • Had Jimi Hendrix lived...

  • He would have taken his hat off to this guy.

  • shawn would have killed him with his amazing playing :)

  • This guy is one of the most underrated guitar players of all time. His articulation, his extremely difficult note groupings to play and his improvisation skills are amazing.

So influenced by other instruments, can hear it in his playing.

This guy was so ahead of everyone and still is, imagine the music he would be making when he was 60 if he didnt have pyriotic arthritis and had to take all those steroids........

    R.I.P

  • ive recently just discovered lane but i can already tell hes going to provide me with years of enjoyment and listening pleasue :)

  • there he goes again..the greatest .!!

very few have this sublime edge

the notes he plays are out of this fucking planet and unbelievable.

and im actually happy this video has only 18000 views.

priceless music should be reserved only for the few :-)

    ps.

when i was 13, i thought Slash was God

by the time i was 17, i could play Slash's stuff left handed.

but i still havent figured out Mr Lane yet.

    perhaps i never will..:-)

  • very deep, man!

  • I think hes less to be figured out and more to be just experienced

  • I could listen to Lane just improving for hours over one little chord. Its so meditative.

  • I miss Shawn's playing so much. I am happy that he let me record this show to share with others. It seems to have made it's rounds over the years, and that is a great thing. Nice to see all these clips popping up all over Youtube.

  • Yeah many thanks Charlie..... it's a great front row view, thanks for shooting it! We're lucky to have all this footage of Shawn now.

  • This song just give back oxygen to my brain,I just can't get enough...

  • Magnificent. Shawn was one of a quintet of the greatest electric guitarists in who ever lived (the others being Danny Gatton, Scotty Anderson, Allan Holdsworth & Jerry Donahue).

  • Absolutely perfect list!!! I would have chosen the exact same five!

  • Thanks, bud. I think I'll add Frank Gambale as well: his sweep picking is vastly superior to anyone else's.

  • i always see this as the bridge between the clean shaven, ponytailed " young" shawn lane and the bearded, beret'd later shawn lane. here he has the beard, but no beret yet. the music is simply heavenly

  • i reeeally reeeally want to get this full show.

  • Me too, does an audio copy of the entire show exist?

  • yes. i saw someone had the audio and then there is also the video. i'd totally buy this if i could find it.
