This is my favourite of all her poems, as it strikes to the very heart of every mother who has watched her children laugh and play, and years later is re-visiting the very same favourite spot. The pictures of the past the haunt your present, in a happy way , aswell as a poignant way. Childhood is a very special time, and her sons have a great mum.
I grew up in an area close to Akaroa and my childhood was filled with her poetry - this is the first time I've ever heard this poem about Akaroa; I had no idea she was so connected to somewhere I know so well!
And you could tell how touched everyone in the audience was, because it was dead silence the whole way through... no coughing or moving of legs or anything. Everyone was completely enthralled.
I wasn't expecting that. And on such a light daytime quiz show. It's nice that channel 4 weren't all uptight about her choice. Her delivery is, of course, masterful.
my pal at work told me about this episode and it brought tears to her too so i tried to find out the name of it and now many months later i have found it. she had some sadness in her life and really loved this poem so i am goin to write it out and frame it for her birthday. thanks Pam coz its gona be agreat b'day pressie along with your new book.
that's interesting, because this clip cuts out so abruptly at the end you wonder what the reaction of the rest of them might be to it. Thanks for your comment.
@ITW84 just a question? are you a mother? 'cos it's not so much about the Cannon but about the feelings of a mother going back to a place where her children were so happy and she's happy that she could do this for them but now they're gone into the wider world where she can't help them any more. It's a bittersweet sort of thing. I can understand exactly the feelings behind this poem.

At 0:32 you can hear the host laughing at this incredibly childlike rhyme. I don't know where she finds the time to write something so unrefined!

She did this when she came to melbourne.
It's so beautiful.

Absolutely gorgeous.

A great poet, although most of her works are humorous including 'Oh I Wish I'd Looked After Me Teeth'
