check out AFX - flow coma (it's a remix, but awesome) then Aphex Twin - 54 Cymru Beats. nothing nin ever did comes close to touching that. nin is 50% about the lyrics which are all about trent feeling sorry for himself. aphex doesn't need words, and still says much more. my opinion.

sorry, it just bugs the hell out of me how utterly fucking monotonous and boring trents beats became as the years went on, but then you look back and see they never really were anything but a simple beat that repeats over and over and over. it bothered me even more on 'with teeth' though, because it seems like every track had to start with a couple bars of that drum beat first, then the track started, highlighting the repetition even more. it's like JESUS do something different with those drums!

i used to think nin had a lot of depth, but if you look at it, it's still pop formula driven music. the best nin album, the fragile, had some pieces that were instrumentals and were among the best on the discs. they still almost always had simple drums though. the timings are almost always simple. sure march of the pigs throws a curve in its signature but that's on track. check out druqks by aphex twin. THAT is deep.
