The first time I heard this song was on MuchMusic (basically MTV Canada), and some guest group picked it. I remember the guy introduced by saying something like "one of the only bands that can make the sound of a jet taking off music". So true...

Only Shallow demonstrates a mastery of multilayering technique and creates a dense atmosphere. There's no way in hell that Nirvana can, or could have topped that, it's compositional brilliance that comes with having actual talent.
What a crock of pretentious bullshit! I love both bands and I find it embarrassing that people like you have to resort to such levels of snobbery. Listening to MBV doesn't make you some sort of bastion of high art.
No no way not even close. SLTS is in a different key for one thing. The drum groove is completely different (these are real drums but they've been sequenced and quantized) so no. Not even close.
man, album sales have nothing to do with it... this song owns teen spirit hands down. there are a million bands out there better than nirvana and MBV and just one of them.
Some of the best bands I know of are nobody bands. Selling more albums does not prove that a band is better. Some of the greatest musicians I've heard are reletively unknown but could kick butt a lot of mainstream artists in a duel of guitars, keyboards, drums, etc. Your statement is truly quite an ilogical one
true, but when you think about it, he has a point. Music IS entertainment, it is ment for peoples enjoyment, so despite having very little talent, conviction or originality, that argument does prove in a way that the Backstreet Boys are "better" in a sense
You are truly uneducated and somehow you stumbled onto this band. Which puts the backstreet boys to shame. They were just another worthless boy band that flopped
Dumb shit, you can't prove an opinion. By that logic, the beatles are better than any band ever as they are the top selling recording group in the wrold.
they made have sold records, but they dont have songs that express real integrity, real emotion. And have you ever heard someone who's not a nine 9 old girl back in the late 90s say that the backstreet boys is their favorite band?
"an amount of effort and time put into a record that you don't get anymore."
I'm getting tired of people complaining about current pop music, I seem to see it all the time across YouTube. Everyone just getting annoyingly over-sentimental over a certain period of music and then dismissing everything else before or after it.(Usually the latter)
This song is just a brilliant example of just how good music can get, especially from a technical and electronic point of view. It shows expert production and an amount of effort and time put into a record that you don't get anymore.
But if the shoegazer bands were influenced by MVB, then obviously they share musical similarities, so as initiators of the genre they are categorized like that as well
Neil Young influenced Grunge, and was titled the "Godfather of Grunge", but Neil himself definitely did not play Grunge.
Shoegazing wasn't even a genre really, it's more of a movement (like Britpop), that combined the sensibilities of Noise music with Dream pop. (Which was influenced from the likes of MBV who used noise to create melody) Also the name itself comes from the bands at that time, using so many guitar pedals that they kept their heads to the floor, but MBV hardly used pedals.
NO ONE will ever believe that "shoegaze" relates to guitar pedals. It's because the singers were a bunch of mopers! Come on! How can you believe that bit about guitar pedals! By the way i luv shoegazer music

Saw them in Santa Monica a couple weeks ago. Fucking unbelievable!!! Like a couple 747's with engines at full power in a highschool gym sized room. The ground shook, the seats shook, our bones shook. Unforgetable!!!
"isn't anything" was a classic record and laid the bed for "loveless".. if you were 16-23 in 1991, regardless of where you lived (mbv was all over 120minutes/post modern mtv), and you weren't in tune to mbv, then you were listening to bel biv deboe or tesla.. my generations velvet underground..
I came across MBV in 1989 because Robert Smith of the Cure said it was the greatest album/band ever. 20 years on... he is still right. I am super-jealouse of all you that got to see them live. Now if we could get the Stone Roses to tour?????
You discovered the Valentines as far back as 1989 and you missed them live ? I did so "only" 3 years later and saw them thrice : the first time for the "Loveless" tour, and twice this year.
dude, robert smith always helps great bands out. back in the day he said that interpol was one of the few bands these days who still make things from the heart, and even got them as his opening act. and now just look at them! =]

The movie-My Bloody Valentine is Canadian alright,The band are from Dublin,Ireland though.
manconoo 3 years ago
Sorry to be so misleading. All I meant was that Canadians really like the band, as well.

Saw them in Santa Monica a couple weeks ago. Fucking unbelievable!!! Like a couple 747's with engines at full power in a highschool gym sized room. The ground shook, the seats shook, our bones shook. Unforgetable!!!

Cool band, I'm glad they are on here, so I can get to know them.

Does anybody here know, when those fucking reissues are coming out?
They seem to be forever delayed.

Now if we could get the Stone Roses to tour?????
jeepyjb 3 years ago
You discovered the Valentines as far back as 1989 and you missed them live ? I did so "only" 3 years later and saw them thrice : the first time for the "Loveless" tour, and twice this year.

dude, robert smith always helps great bands out. back in the day he said that interpol was one of the few bands these days who still make things from the heart, and even got them as his opening act. and now just look at them! =]
