It has to be a neodymium supermagnet. They are available at some craft and hardware stores, or online at a place like K&J Magnetics (link in the "Show more" box).
This is hardly a pendulum in the scientific sense. The pivot moves, it doesn't have a constant period and the trajectory is erratic. But hey, you do have 50k views!
The models of modern physics are telling us there is an infinite number of parallel universes right in front of us constantly.
Viewing this device from a strict scientific view is limited, because perhaps in other universes, it has a valid reality as a pendulum in a non-scientific sense.
In one universe, for example, this pendulum could be seen in an artistic sense. In another universe, it might be heard in a musical sense. In yet another, it is experienced in a Zen sense.
It has to be a very strong magnetic field, and the cheapest way to do that is with a neodymium magnet. This one came out of a broken shake-type flashlight.
You can buy magnets online at K&J Magnetics or other suppliers. The K&J link is in the "more info" box.
It's an example of a homopolar motor, which is the simplest form of electric motor. The principle was discovered 150 years ago, but only recently with neodymium magnets has it become possible to experiment with it.
The biggest piece of machinery using this right now is in the navy. A 50,000 horsepower homopolar electric motor is being developed for the latest ships.
This is a neodymium magnet out of a shake-type flashlight. It is so strong that it makes the battery stick to the steel welding rod stand. Coins also stick to the magnet...but only if they are Canadian coins! Use washers if you don't have Canadian coins.
The thinner contact wire is a piece of stiff 29 gage copper wire like used in plumbing repairs and crafts (Home Depot)
if you can make it spin in air, and do the spinning bugs why dont you try to make a car like thing ... something that moves around in sted of just spinning, it may be the next energy sorce for cars...
Not a bad idea...since the navy will be using a 50,000 horsepower homopolar motor in their new ships, one that is merely 500 horsepower should be easy to make. If I had any money that is. Which I don't.
I will work, it will just be hard to make contact on the side of the magnet...you may need a Canadian coin or round slug under it to make constant contact. Try it!
Not very efficient. Most homopolar setups drain the battery fast. It creates heat in the magnet, sometimes enough to lose magnetism or explode. It creates heat in the battery, as well as the holder and wire. This setup would probably run for about 5 minutes on a 2650 mah AA battery.
so a n50 cube 25mm would u loos much magnetism how long to fined noticeable diff by touch now do u loos it cause heat or battery ? if heat cant u cool it useing ice between mag and bat?
hehe, The principle is that a conducting magnetic disc produces torque when an electrical current is applied across it. In this case, the circuit is the electrons leave the bottom of the battery, through the magnet, coins, copper wire, up to the welding rod then to the + terminal of the battery. It's a 150 year-old idea made easily possible with neodymium magnets.
I tried it, but it seemed to like the oblong shape of the hanger bearing surface better for this pendulum effect. The balls, (especially gold-plated ones, till the plating burns off, hehe), work good for rotating bearings, sometimes two or three. They can get hot!
can u use any cylinder magnite or dose it have to be a cetain type

It demonstrates a simple pendulum made with a magnet and a piece of wire. It may possibly be the world's simplest powered pendulum.

Will the ones(it is also a neodymium magnet) inside the hardisk drives be powerful enough like this? Or as long as it's a neodymium magnet...
Sorry I have no knowledge about magnets... :P

Wow very interesting. And what do you hope to gain out of this? Just experiment?
HellsHighwayTrooper 2 years ago
I hope to gain a better understanding of magnets, because I believe magnetism will bring major transformation to our planet in the next few years.
See the MT Keshe videos for mind-blowing information on this. (search Keshe in YouTube)

If you come up with theories, experiment's, perhaps you will be the one changing our future hehe.

how long does a triple AAA battery run with this experiment? pls respond..thx..
CHACHUBHAI 2 years ago
I use a duracell AA battery, in the biggest 2650 MaH size, and it will last about 5 - 10 minutes.
MrfixitRick 2 years ago
Pls tell me , do you recharge the battery this way ??????? pls let me know
HellonearthKratos 3 years ago
The battery discharges while running this experiment, and I use a battery charger to charge the battery back up.

i was just going to ask that! wtf telepathic powers maybe or something.... How would you find out if a magnets Neodymium ?
lotusiotus 3 years ago
well if is stronger than ur fridge mag or brake it open and ull see that its grayish smooth texture
17hmr243 3 years ago
Oh so my magnet isnt a neodymium but i definitely would break it open to see lol it can shatter and kill
lotusiotus 3 years ago
so how efficient is it?

I wonder if a ball magnet at the top of the battery (the + end) would make this even smoother.
