TenStarsplus!!!! Being a native Michigander I can tell you something about those waves!!! The cliffs they are pounding are about 90 feet tall!!! Try surfing that pipeline!!! Thank you for the fantabulous video my friend!!! Stephen
There's just something about Lake Superior that my wife and I love. In fact, we were talking one day and I said that when I die I want my ashes put in Lake Superior and my wife was suprised because she had been planning to tell me she wanted her ashes to go in Lake Superior too. Thanks for the video!
If you read the explanation below describing why the water gets temporarily cloudy near shore during storms like this, and if you were familiar with Lake Superior, you would know that this is some of the purest, cleanest surface fresh water in the world.
If you ever get the chance; on a clear night with a full moon and the waves crashing in like this, wow! It's like being on another planet, just a natural high.
ztmercado writes: you can easily get out there, there are so many gaps in the waves.
Yeah. Until you realize that the trees you see in the distance are 80-100 feet tall and the water temps in the summertime are in the low 50's. This looks like fall which is going to put the temps in the 30's and during the winter, Superior goes sub-freezing. It is lower than freezing temp, but does not freeze over because of the depth and movement of the water.
My familiy immigrated to Northern Wisconsin from Germany and Austria before there was a Ellis Island. I've seen the inland storms as well as visited the graves of those who lived and battled these inland seas on the Islands. These were men of no equal, just trying to provide for their families. Some people don't understand how Superior can peak and how deep it is, over a thousand feet deep and waves can be 30' + high.
When I was in Ireland, my Irish friends thought we (midwesterners) were crazy to be wary of "a few lakes". We showed them this video and others to explain. Wonderful how their faces went from grinning to shocked! I really do love our lakes!
Love the Arrowhead of Mn. I bet a lot of folks have no idea of the force of nature off of Superior. Guess that's why The Wreck of Edmund Fitz became such a big hit. I live 550 miles south. I get up in the UP or NE MN when ever I can. Wish I was there now.

Browse around at this site & you will see a 20ft.+ wall/wave of vertical white water neairng the lighthouse at the Duluth ship channel.
During storms on the lake, the coastal areas experience cloudy water as you see here because the wave action stirs up fine silt among the rocks near shore. The water actually has a red hue near river and stream outlets because of the reddish mud washed down from the hills. If you notice about 100 yards out on this video, the water is its normal, steely blue/green. After a storm like this, it takes usually two to three days for the silt, etc. to settle, and for the normal water color to return.
Don't play with Lake Superior. I can count seven people who are no longer with us, and who I knew personally, who thought they could handle the big lake. Please don't play chicken with the waves.
WOW that is awesome! I found a cool spot to watch (and get sucked in almost) by waves at Stony Point right off the old scenic highway about 15 minutes north of Duluth. Really cool area to watch waves during a storm.

Swam in it, Fished in it, Sailed on it. Respect this lake, Yes and I will always. This is one of the Great Lakes that will turn on you in a second and without warning. It get's this Very black look to it as it is turning also. Those that have been there know what I mean.
It's really hard to judge the hight of waves simply by how they look, but I know on Lake Ontario, the wave faces that make it to shore around Toronto generally don't get over 5ft, though they spray up to about 20ft - my guess is these wave faces are in the 8 to 10ft range, but it's really hard to tell.
This is one of the best videos of waves on Lake Superior that I have found. Some of those waves must have 10ft + faces because the trees on top of the cliff look so small in comparison.
that was cool

Polluted water? It's a storm dummy! Water gets murky when the waves are like this. Lake superior is crystal clear.

If you don't respect this lake just keep looking if you were in a 30ft you would have a hellova job keeping it into the wind.
That water is 32 degrees and 34 in summer.

It's estimated to be about 40 feet on the left edge, growing to over 60 feet as you go to the right.
