His 8 main string instrument is tuned to "Varansai" tuning I believe. Combines Kharaj Pancham and Ghandar Pancham. I seemed to have read somewhere that he later removed the extra 'Ga' string that enabled this approach.
Much has changed in the world of music. Spend a little time looking at todays hindustani musicians, they know technique, has a good sounding instrument, and know raagdari, but there playing shows the possibility of a spritual deadness inside. The old generation' Ali Akbar Khan, Amir Khan, Vilayat Khan., Bismillah Khan, Hariprasad Chaurasia, ect were all unique individuals that put there own stamp on how music sounds to them . Globalization has changed music for the worse. NB shows that here
With all due respect other Sitar maestros and instrumentalists of his time, he is probably the most complete musician I have ever listened to. As a kid I remember listening to the LP with his Maluha Kalyan Gat on Chaartal ki Sawari with Pt. Kanai Dutta. I still keep looking for that record. His music touches the heart like no one else. He gave a different dimension to the Sitar.
@schakraverty. I think you mean Gramaphone Co of India Lp No. EAST 1305. This piece I think can be heard on musicindiaonline, but over there it says that it is from the album "fond memories-air release", but this is misinformation i think. Anyway I'm quite sure its the one you mean, because it is quite amazing. Im trying to get the mp3.

Can we request it, for the sake of all music lovers and those who hold Pandit Nikhil Banerjee and his music so dear to their hearts, that you please post the full recording. You shall do the world of music a great favour!!
Truly the most magnificent sound I have ever heard. Nikhil ji's music is God personified...so sublime, so tranquil, so pristine, so divine. His sitar makes you weep. There will never be another Saint in Indian music like him!
Iwas a disciple of Nikhil-Da from 1971 until his untimely death in '86. I used to have an open invitation to watch him pratice at his home in Jodhpur Park (suburb of S. Calcuuta). I heard him many times in concert and once at a lavish house concert on Nob Hill in SF. He favored live performance.; he was nervous in the studio.
whops! ment to leave that reply to sitariya. this is Nikhil-kaka's own creation. it is a combination of mahula and shuddh kalyan. it is very similar to hemant, which had a very significant position in Nikhil-kaka's repertoire.
"this is Nikhil-kaka's own creation. it is a combination of mahula and shuddh kalyan"
Maluha Kalyan is not a creation of Nikhil Banerjee. Alauddin Khan set down the structure.Nikhil Banerjee's record with a Chautal-ki-Sawari gat acc. by Kanai Dutt is well known. Hence the pardonable association of Malhua Kalyan with Banerjee. There used to be a fine rendition by Bahadur Khan on All India Radio, but seems to have disappeared from the air waves.
Devine, perfect, intuitive - and yet "thought-full" -of musical "surprises in sound: Nikhil Banerjee

Even one raised in Western Civilization can hear the emotion in this piece. From a sob to a wail all surrounded by a prayer.

Shear beauty. If He taught all of us one thing it is to play from oneself and not be told what to play.

A flame flickering on wind - Banerjee flickering on the breath of God - one of the most profound musical performances captured.
Thank you!
