My dad had this song on an old 78, which he bought in Japan when he was in the Navy. He let me have it, but I broke it, which broke my heart as it was irreplaceable. I can't believe I've found it on here, but love this version too. Fantastic!
Fun to hear this song again after so many years... even though the singing was terrible, off-key and mis-pronounced. I heard this many times sung by local groups in US service clubs near Tokyo in 1952-53. It's actually a very funny song and the performers used to really ham it up.
Even sung this way though, it brought back many pleasant memories of the early occupation years - difficult for the people of Japan, but they gave our soldiers and families great respect and that's not forgotten.

This video is bizarre! This is a song written by an African-American soldier in Japan after World War II, and the version they're copying here by the Club Nisei Orchestra was recorded in Hawaii. And now, here's a version by a group in the Netherlands...?!
