...Of course she was slain leaving Tsurumaru totally and utterly lost-in total, absolute isolation and confusion in the world. His world was not only filled with physical darkness, but now psychological darkness
One of the most sombre scenes in all of film making can be found in the ending of 'Ran'. Where we see poor Tsurumaru, Lord Hidetora's son-in-law and Lady Sue's brother whom Hidetora blinded when he was a boy, waiting in the dusk of day-and the metaphorical dusk to a treacherous series of events-on top of the remaining foundation, or fortified wall, of a ruined castle Hidetora destroyed some years back for his sister Sue to return who doubled back to retrieve his flute.
la banda sonora que le han puesto sobra, la original de takemitsu plasma toda la tragedia de la peli, si hay algo que no hay en ran es epica, sino drama en estado puro....
I can not belive that this movie only won 1 Oscar in 1985. And "Out of Africa" won 7. I have not seen Out of Africa but it scored only 6,9 of 10 out of 14 000 votes on imdb. guess the idea of the acadamy awards letting a foreign film win to many Oscars was, well.. undesireable.
the oscar is an american film academy award. its sole purpose is to celebrate and promote american movies, in america. the fact that there actually is a category called best foreign film should explain that. i would rate the golden globe higher than the oscar actually.
the thing i rate the highest is my own opinion. Maybe its kinda sad to see one of your favorite movies losing an oscar to some medicore one but in the end the movie stays and the memories and feelings you had while watching it ! A little golden figure wont change that!
RAN is a great movie maybe one of the best ive ever seen !
The costume design and makeup in this movie is really amazing! To equip every single actor playing the soldiers in this movie with such detailed armors and costumes is not something every filmmaker would do. And if you look at the other nominees that year, you will most definatly agree with me. This movie should have won best cinematography too. but lost to "out of afraca" wich won 7 oscars that year.. thus proving the first half of you comment. the acadamy awards is shit...mostly.
this is the what make me wante to go to japan,, and i did and for over 8 years!!!!!!!!!!! TO learn more about it rich history... ok maybe not a good one but still better then most.
And also japan was pretty peaceful under Togugawa Shogunate for like 200 years. More peaceful than 1900's america...
Technologically they were behind because of their isolationism, but the richness of their history was in many ways preserved through that, and hardened it into a national heritage much stronger than any western state.
Contraly to your opinion, Edo--today's Tokyo during Edo period was the largest city in the world--a million population-- with the best waterworks, rich art, philosophy, education--the highest literacy rate in the world at the time, less crime rate etc. Still its true, Japan had the isolation policy, on top of being an islands nation, but this actually contributed in preserving the old-ways.
I'll stick with my Criterion Collection version with more features and better picture.

RAN is amazing. It's a work of art, as opposed to most movies Hollywood churns out for a buck.
