  • thanks for the info

  • Next step, ima teach you how to ..... cook a goose. I lmaoed

  • Very good info - thanks for sharing

  • 0:32 - 0:33 MAGIC TRICK!!!

  • What can be said? That's really sad.

  • this is idiotic. If you remember to bring a brillo pad, why not remember to just bring a lighter or fire starter??

  • What the fuck is the matter with you guys saying "Why not just use a match/lighter?"?. Well just in case you get into a survival situation where you don't have a lighter/matches then I would like to know how to use my cell battery (providing there is no connection or it is broken) and steel wool or something similar to make a fire.

Thanks a lot Backpackermagazine for this, I really like these videos.

  • @Zoltario you sound like the most intelligent person on this thread. DAMN, HOW STUPID ARE YOU PEOPLE, REALLY?

  • would do u marry me ? =D

    Genius

  • @stocker05 Read any true survival guide (not a zombie apocalypse survival guide) 99.9% of good ones say to bring steel wool. A) it starts fires. B) it can shine off aluminum (ie a food ration) so bright that any light reflecting off it can be seen for miles around. And as far as timber, use a tampon if you have one. Tampons are also critical for survival situation; they clot blood, use your imagination, and are highly flammable...So guys, suck it up and bring tampons when back country camping.

  • Where the fuck do I get steel wool and tinder????

  • I tried it, as long as the power can still travel through your phone will still work...

  • but the question is will ur fone still work after that

  • If I had thought to bring a brillo pad I would of just grabbed a lighter...lol

  • Growing up in the dark ages I learned to rub 2 sticks together, and I am not going to wreck my cell phone battery doing it.

  • Stick the battery up your but and burn some farts

  • So i remembermy tinder..check....i remember my brilo pad....check.....now for the oh shit no matches i knew there was areason i remembered the brilo just in case i forgot the matches....just use a lighter man...who has tinder and brilo on them with no matches....fail

  • Thanks, good practical skill. I could smell the goose but . . . . :( . stonenstrop

  • Good site for survival and old skills manuals for the coming collapse that I have purchased for myself & my family:

    dawnapproaches dotcom

They have an Ultimate Survival collection of 150 books. They put all 150 books on a DVD-Rom for $9.99 & I have not only found it cheaper than one standard book alone, but much more resourceful (over 36,000 pages) with many of the ways that have been lost through time. They also have huge woodworking & homesteading collections.

  • Just stay home and watch tv.

That way you won't get lost in the woods and have to depend on Smokey the Bear and his cell phone to come and save you.

Hope that helps and leave that poor little goose alone!

  • just carry a knife all the time with you, and you can use the knife for fire lighting

  • Can you still use the battery with your phone after this

  • STEEL WOOL AND WATERPROOF TINDER are available on all outdoor environments specially on a survival situation.

  • is this a survival skill ? ok so i came home from school and my perants were not in soo i thought to my self ohh i realy need a shit so i went and got loads of leaves went to the bottom of my garden and had a shit and wiped my ass with some leaves (I WANT LIKES FOR TELLING YOU THIS

  • I doubt you will have that steel wool with you...

  • I'm much more likely to have a lighter in my pocket than a BRILLO PAD

  • if you have a phone then why dont u just ring help ??

  • @BFCSUPERMAN Most wildernessy places are too remote to get cell service.

  • @BFCSUPERMAN if ur in the wild u probally wont have signal

  • Yeah this works great if you just so happen to have a Brillo pad in your packet

  • does this ruin your batery

  • 1 where do i find steel wool in a jungle

2 what if i have an iphone

3 did he use firelighter ???????!?!?!?!?

  • The steel wool trick works with almost any battery, but I have to agree with others -- if you can remember to bring that, just remember a lighter. You never know though, good stuff to be aware of just in case.

  • Why not use the phone to call for help?

  • @mjs240184 Some remote areas wouldn't even have a cell signal...

  • @mjs240184 You'll use the phone if its broken

  • @mjs240184 i guess because the assumption is that you dont have any service

  • @mjs240184 no battery? no signal?

  • @mjs240184 you cant call after ww3

  • maybe you shouldn't have put your self in a situation were you will need survival skills

  • @ChubbSquasher yeah why not live your whole life in a plastic bubble....

  • so does the battery become useless. cuz a phone would be nice to call for help

  • Average Cellphone; $70-$120

    5 Pack Bic Lighters - $4.99

Chance of having my cell with me in the woods with no signal - 5%

Chance of having a lighter with me in the woods - 98% Hm...

  • buy lighter and keep steel wool ....all will help for longer survival what if fire goes out.... best thing to do is think and plan now before its to late. "just sayin"

  • buy a lighter..

  • prisoners do this with tinfoil wrappers

  • prolly shouldent do this if you want to use your phone again.... and this only works if you have a cell phone a brillo pad....

and he cheated with that wet fire stuff!!!

  • or maybe you could call for help with your cellphone : O

  • or you could use a peace of glass or aluminium to reflect the sun and start your fire everybody must have those things...?

  • you dont need a cell phone to do this any battery will work and if ur in the wild trying to survive stop fucking with steel wool and a cell phone and call for help... jackass

  • will it work with my home phone?

  • Why is it everywhere in America seems to have no signal? All I see in movies and seems to be true from the comments.

I have been miles deep in woods and still get signal...

  • @darkshad109 It depends which company you're with. Some companies feed off all towers and some only from specific towers which is stupid.

  • wouldn't you rather use your cell phone to call for help?

  • @flyingspacepotatoes facepalm

  • ... if the battery has enough power to short out, just call for help -.-

  • @mcbudweiser AH, But what if you have no signal???

  • @GeEkOuTgAmErS then you run around like a crazy person trying to get a signal.

  • @GeEkOuTgAmErS then run around like a crazy person trying to find it lolololo

  • id rather rub 2 sticks together and call someone silly

  • Very interesting survival technique. A wool pad also has other survival uses. When families go camping there ARE some who take wool pads simply for cleaning purposes. Nothing odd I'd say carring one with you. Wool can be used to strip paint down to the metal to use act as a mirror for say an SOS warning. Good demo & thanks for the vid :)

  • can you use the battery after?

  • Fuck, i have an iphone :/

  • as for having steel wool with you, it should be brought when hiking out of civilization. and if your cell phone battery runs dead, it can still have enough to start a fire.

  • Who carries steel wool ?huh ?

  • if im in an emergency i dont think i would have steel wool with me.....

  • HAND DRILL FTW!!!!! skrew that lol ull never find brillo pads in a survioval situation , but then agen i do use this alot so i have to say nice video mate XDDD

  • I would use my cell phone to call for help.. That's the most logical thing to do in my opinion.

  • @caljohn88 Come On! You can build a fire waiting for 911 to show up!

  • @caljohn88 Oh God, emergency means you're camping in the woods, you've got your steel wool for doing dishes, together with whatever else you've got, but the lighter runs out of butane, or falls into a crack and that's when you apply that method. Whereas your solution is what again? "Hello 911? Yeah, I really need to cook lunch; can someone come here with a lighter urgently?"...

  • @turuanu I was joking asshole relax.

  • @caljohn88 You were expressing your opinion, and nothing made think you were joking. So it appears you have no sense of humor, besides no manners. I don't remember insulting you.

  • @turuanu Sorry next time I will use a "LoL" or a "LMAO" so that you know that I'm joking. I would hate to confuse you again. And as for my manners...What? You were trying to one-up me and make ME feel like the asshole. So don't start with manners.

  • From now on I will always carry an extra brillo pad and not a lighter ?

Come on, really ?. Why on earth would anyone carry a brillo pad around ? How many people actually have these around the house normally ?

  • @googleboyny Let's say your lighter runs out of fuel... Then again, let's say you run out of brillo pads...

This argument was not thought out...

  • Cool!!

  • If you have an iPhone, they can find you because they're tracking you (and you also might get excellent coupon offers for food in your area.)

  • i have an iphone..............

  • @hitemup0211 Buy 'iLight' it turns your iPhone into a cig lighter.

  • @hitemup0211 iphone doesnt use a battery?

  • this is great for arsonist x]

  • jajajajajajajaja, I always carry a metal scouring pad and chalk in my pocket, sure I never run out of fire. (That ghosts are a few).

  • jajajajajajajaj, yo siempre llevo un estropajo de metal y una tiza en el bolsillo, seguro que nunca me quedo sin fuego. (que fantasmas son algunos).

  • I think it is terrible advice to have someone ruin a good tool of a cellphone. This seems like almost laughable advice instead of having people prepare with waterproof matches, or magnesium, or a flint striker, or cotton balls with petroleum.

Probably the last thing you should be advising people to carry is a brillo pad.

  • A brillo pad? Why not just use a flint striker?

  • Yeah. Actually my Science teacher taught me this years ago in gradeschool. And not just a brillo pad works, although that is the most common piece of steel wool you can find, but just any steel wool in general works with this. Also, you don't need to use a cellphone battery, you can use practically any battery. AA's work great. Also, it drains the battery. So assuming you have a cellphone with energy left in it, call for help, don't waste it burning steel wool.

  • does this ruin your battery ?

  • Comment removed

  • If it's an emergency wouldn't it be wiser to leave the battery in the cell phone and call for help? or have the local taxi firm ship in a box of matches.

  • Whew.....good thing I happen to have a brillo pad in my backpocket...

  • Wouldnt that bugger up your phone batttery? I mean if its a bad sitation that you are desperate wont you need your cell phone at some point? and if your using it for this wont it be useless? AND who an earth would carry a brillo pad? thsoe things are flaming awful! I hate them! >:(

  • @SarahShalomDavid No, It dosent break the battery

  • im lost in the wild! but luckily i happen to carry around steel wool and some tinder! :D

  • well if i have a cellphone with a battery that has a charge , i for one move around till i got service , i am just cool like that.

  • @wileyisme what if you're in the jungle?????

  • @DancingSocrates Who goes backpacking in the jungle. You go exploring in a jungle and you will have a guide or you really will not need to worry about the fire because you would be panther food.

  • If you have a phone why dont you just call someone and if it dead this wont work right?

  • @m6mkk yea..in the middle of the woods. I dont think your provider covers the middle of nowhere. You wouldnt get reception.

  • @Kakoa102 actually I live by the woods, and I get pretty good service. Before you go all crazy on me, my city slicker relatives phones work on top of the mountains around me to.

  • great now you need to remember to keep a brillo pad with you. why not just take a lighter....

  • you clearly dont know much. lighters fail easily, especially in wind or rain. NEVER count on a lighter.

  • @TheOutdoorsman07 it just seems the steel wool thing is a little irrational. Why not: "Now, just take out your handy flint striker" However, this is still really good advice, it does get you to think resourcefully. If all people have is their cell phones than they know they just need to find a steel wool like material. Maybe it can be sourced from the phone itself. But then...you'd have to give up on calling for help...

  • @gracer99 true, although it would be good to have more then one source of fire. ive heard you can still make embers even when the battery is to dead for the phone to start. (because it has a little left over.) or the phone could be broke. but i always carry steel wool and a battery in m pack just in case.

  • @gracer99 flint gets wet gotta wait for it to dry...ive had my steel wool wet and it still went up...

  • For those of you who don't know this is a guide for backpackers. The chances of them getting stuck in the woods alone is pretty high.

  • what kinda random shit is that i mean you seriously think your going to be stuck out somewhere and you happen just to have a brillo pad and a cell phone i mean a cell phone yeah but who carries brillo pads around in there pocket :\ (like dude why are you rubbing sticks i got brillo pads you dont ??? Fuckin loser) xD WHO THE FUCK BRINGS STEEL WOOL TO CAMP unless your in an RV and have pots and pans (which isnt really camping) For me all i bring is a grate to grill a tent and a few other things

  • @TheFirstLiquidVideos It isn't unheard of for hikers/hunters to bring steel wool and a 9 volt for this very reason since it is waterproof.

  • Comment removed

  • not a great ideal people you can short the freaking battery out as well and it will blow the fuck up in your hand

  • when would you ever need to start a fire in a place that has no lighters or anything but does have cell phones and steel wool.

  • @ataraxic89 do you even go camping?

  • @hangtight97 No, you're right, I dont go camping. I go minimalist surviving, so you can see why I wouldnt have steel wool. But even when I have camped I didnt bring steel wool...

  • @ataraxic89 then im the oddball for bringing it 90% of the time

  • @hangtight97 for what? and yes, yes you are. :)

  • Hell what kind of idiot carry around a steelwool? Maybe if you got lost doin the dishes?

  • lol im gunna laugh when one of you critics fuckin get lost in the wild with no matches, lighter all you have is your cell phone and a brillow pad and there is no way for you to get service and are cold and hungry

  • He could have just called for help

  • or you can just buy a lighter for 50 cents!!!

  • It seems like it would fuck up your battery

  • anytme you go camping.. essentials to bring w/ you: portable water filtration (w iodine), machete, fire starting equip (lighter, mag stick, 9 volt w/ brillo pad in seperate plastic bags), first aid w/ suture kit, compass, sleep bag, water proof tent, mre's (water), all in one utensil plate and cookware (survival) insect repellent, satellite phone (if you have financial means). be well.

  • good luck "finding" a brillow pad out in the woods lol, how about 2 sticks like the old fred flintstone way? lol

  • i hate it when your tryin to let the vid load and you maximize it then it fucking restarts !

  • ok mr lame O make sure you take a brillow pad instead of matches or a damn lighter

    ..

    what a dumb son bitch,,,lol

  • yeah just carry brillow pad everywhere you go no worries. this is rediculous

  • What's next. Vid on how to start a fire with just a propane self igniting torch, a July 4th sparkler and 5 gallons of gas?

How about if you find yourself lost in the wilderness and only have a thermite grenade and 9 compressed fuel soaked fireplace logs video.

  • oh yea i carry a fuckin brillow pad with me in the woods ?? WTF just use ur phone to call for help dumass

  • ........ but... i...have a iphone? what do i do?

  • Well, Backpacker There Is A Much Easier Way By Having Cleaning Metal For The Sink And A Battery.... I Would Think Elsewise To Use Me Phone...

  • This is kind of a silly vid. Anyone carrying steel wool with them to start an emergency fire will probably have better, longer lasting things with them like char cloth and a flint or hell, a lighter...

  • so is call for help...or make a fire

  • Comment removed

  • now if im stranded out in the wild...where the fcuk am I going to find some steel wool?

  • Oh and if you have a FLAT modern cellphone battery you can salvage the lithium and react it with water so make fire.

  • Good luck doing that with a modern phone (LIPO battery). They have over current protection which will kick in and are capable of puffing out and shooting out flames if you try bypass it. So you will need to open the battery enclosure carefully to expose the cell and remove the circuit board and use the actual internal LIPO itself - try using less of the material to create the short so it will burn out and prevent the battery from destroying itself.

  • where you guys smoking crack in the woods and came up with this?

  • Cro, that was totally unnecessary and inappropriate.

  • Is he gonna fuck that bird or start a fire with it?...

  • @cro499 I GUESS WE WILL NVER KNOW IF HE FUQS BIRDS?

  • If you have the forethought to take a brillo pad, why not just carry a lighter or firesteel?

  • if had a batery whith power in it i wold CALL for help

  • same idea as 9v battery fire, good idea with cell phone battery, ill try it with an old battery

  • "Hey Verizon, I just bought this Cell and for some reason the battery doesn't work..."

  • a better way to do it is use a 9 volt battery it lights mush faster and no broken cellphone!

  • yea they do but thats if you have a 9v battery, the reason this is so use full is obviously because every idiot has a cell now, but yea the 9v is clearly better, then you can save your cell for when you find an area with possible service.

  • better idea is,, take a lighter in your way out...

  • i always carry a brillo pad with me when i go out

  • if your cell is broken and you happen to have steel wool and you're about to die from hypothermia then i say go for it. but otherwise, this is real bad advice. a working cell phone is like gold.

  • i do want to add that backpacker magazine is awesome however.

  • hey guys it works better if you wash the soap off first!! also works better if you dont bundle it up so tight......and by the way THE critical step is proper prep of your tinder, especially when your not using comercial cheaters like the wet fire......dont get me wrong i use it too and i love it but you still need to know how to do with out in a survival situation

  • for those of you retards who go, who the hell carrys steel wool?? I do, and every person that has either been through a. Boy scouts, B. knows anything about survival, or C. Has a decent survival kit on them when they go hiking/backpacking. Now, normally you would use a 9V battery to light your steel wool, but this is a neat alternative to that. anyway, i would just stick to flint and take some of that lent out of your dryer. it works great and is easy too. (for when your battery is dead)

  • @akzorz you carry steel wool because its essential on cleaning pots / steel cups easily.

  • @macadoodle15 that too i guess.. but i dont cary it for that reason. :P i use non stick..

  • how is this good -use bush skills to start a fire and dont rely on this shit keep your phones battery intact and charged to call for emergency do you guys know the emergency number(112) that dials whether you have a signal or not look in your phones manual you dont even need any reception bars you can call for help via satelite it should be the only phone call you need to make (112 will work anywhere its international) if you want fire rub sticks together

  • would your phone battery still work?

  • Who the hell carrys around a brillow pad or steel wool? This is pretty ridiculous.

  • I am much more likely to be carrying two lighters than a Brillo Pad!

    Next!

  • Why not just call for help?

  • @ColdKillerTV i know its a waste of money to use your phone battery to make a fire instead of just calling for help

  • OK, here it is: you have a cell phone with a battery, for survival you need a fire, right? but wait a sec, you destroy the battery by making a fire, but at the same time you rip off your chance of calling for help, without a fire, you will die of hypothermia, so either way you're doomed right?

  • doesn't the battery fuck up when you do it

  • @welikefire1 its better to kill your battery than to die yourself!

  • Learn instead how to do the hand drill method for fire making NOW B4 in a survival situation. Use Mullein for the drill, approx. 24" long and 3/8" diam. Use cottonwood for fireboard. I find these are the quickest combo. Watch desertsurvivalist on UTube to see method.

  • some cellphone battery can explode doing something like that to i will not recommend it

  • I wish my son had known this last winter when he was stuck on the top of a mountain with just the barest necessities - and wet matches, as he DID have a cell phone!

  • Is his name Jon Dork?

    .

    Must be.

  • Better yet, get a match or even better a lighter, some gasoline, kerosene will do also, some fire wood or maybe one of those logs they sell at the supermarket, a metal crate, some polished rocks or if you prefer a reservation at the Ritz Carlton.

    .

This video is proof positive that morons are capable of making videos.

    .

Thanks Mac, I'll make sure to have all the items you mentioned in my back pocket next time I am in a survival situation.

  • Why would I want steel wool when i can just buy a lighter at the store!
