There will be an event on the evening of 30 May 2011 to raise awareness and promote the creation of a MARINE PARK for this reef and tide pools. It will be held at nearby DeWolfe Park featuring music and information about the development project.
Might as well have one acre of natural shoreline preserved in all of the Basin, eh?
The people in Bedford are not living in a bubble..why do you think this video was created? your comment is ridiculous. Of course, there are many worse things happening in the environment, but this is how people take action..one thing at a time.
the big deal is this is wrong. it is a natural tidal reef and bird habitat, and history that will be lost all for large development....more condos and shopping . We are losing all our green space, come back in a few years and say whats the big deal, when there is nothing left but a concrete jungle.
@borfus i hope hope u die a long and painful death, and have your eyes ripped out by cats and have your skin eaten by animals. o.. and i no.. PLANT A TREE ON YOUR GRAVE!
to "borfus"...you're entitled to your opinion..as "we people" are to ours. Building on top of a natural reef and tidal pool and bulldozing habitat for nesting sandpipers and other migratory birds is not intelligent development. It is NOT the environmentally responsible way to go in fact. In this day and age, you'd think that development would be more environmentally friendly..in fact many other cities are leading the way when developing and incorporating and saving existing greenspace.
the development will just move elsewhere to more environmentally sensitive forests. you people think you're helping the environment, but you're not. dense development is the environmentally responsible way to go.
@bluenoserr so would u still go ahead with this plan if they were takin down your house to put these condos in?? no i didnt think so.. And development is not the way to go! humans have already killed endangered species, and cut down way to many trees! those starfish and crabs might be smaller than u, but that dosent mean that u have to build on top of them!
So stop thinkin like we own the planet, Cause we dont and we have to share it!
p.s anyone who likes development should die a painful death.
.... in case I gave the wrong impression with my previous post, I'm a big-time treehugger, I just think that realistically, development needs to go somewhere, and something precious is ALWAYS destroyed. Minimising harm is the goal. Lest we forget that Nova Scotia has more coastline than the entire nation of Brazil, but its filling up. If we can keep yuppies in Bedford waterfront condos instead of having them on 2-acre lots in Bayside, then that is a good thing for everybody. Even the starfish!
Pack the Yuppies into cell blocks like this, they've already bought up enough of Hammonds Plains to turn into golf courses...
In fact, why is no one making a video about how the Hammonds Plains development is destroying habitat of Fisher Cats; who last count in NS, numbered under 700???
There are many other places in the HRM to gawk at starfish. Developing this location is a perfect way to keep people from moving out to places like Tantallon, Porters Lake, Kingswood, etc. Those areas were until recently productive wilderness, but are now covered in low-density suburban sprawl that makes very poor animal habitat. Nobody wants development in their "backyard", but high-density living is the way to go.
The fundamental problem is human overpopulation, so stop having so many kids!!
I have lived in Bedford my entire life and i plan to live there for many years to come and i just visted the reef yesterday, and just to think of what there going to do to it after seeing it is heartbreaking, there were crabs, snails, birds, coral and starfish... and lots of them! Please if u want to save the Bedford Waterfront send the link up there^^^^^ to all of youre friends and tell them to pass it on to.
P.S @jt121399 You must be a idiot if u think those plans look great.
if you can't find my facebook group its "Save the Bedford Basin Reef" ...missed a word there. Look it up and join to see all the info and photos. thanks
that's right shubie sam...shame on them. If you are on facebook..join our group..Save the Bedford Reef! just do a search for it ...we have other still photos as well. more support the better!
I was born and raised in the neighbourhood of this development. I have watched this wonderful natural area be steadily destroyed for over 40 years. This is not "development" it is total unadulterated greed.
Where I caught my first fish 50 years ago is now a parking lot. Shame on everyone behind this and those who think it is a good idea to destroy what is natural and replace it with obscene cement and asphalt.
@jt121399 ARE YOU INSANE?!!! This "proposed development" is killing inocent creatures! How would you like it if a buldozer ran over your home and built a large condo!
This is a beautiful video. Your son will be proud of your effort and dedication. It's a shame that our city believes development trumps wildlife. I wonder if they really believe the tourists come to see more and more condos, or do they want to see our we responsibly manage our natural environment. In this day and age, presumably, it's about the environment. Protecting, promoting, and living within it.
Extremely well done! You put forth a solid case to which the "power that be" must pay attention. You state the facts clearly without the attitude of "the tree huggers" and only the blind can ignore. Without tradition we have nothing and without careful planning our area will only become another urban jungle of concrete. It is possible to plan a worthy development without the destruction of what we already have. With your true passion - you are the political candidate we need!!
Anal simplicity on behalf of "our" HRM representatives. The day will come when some people will realize money IS the root of all problems..If folks have enough money to pay up to half a million for an apartment, they should really look in a mirror and shake their heads and realize they are part of the roblem, not the solution.Move farther out ,large spaces and beautiful homes.Come on HRM,think for God's sake if not the taxpayers!!
Terrific job!!! VERY touching and clearly demonstrates the impact on the sea and wildlife. HRM does what it pleases with no regard to the residents or the environment. I agree that it is just a cash grab...more money, money money ...taxes taxes taxes. Whoever did the impact assessment obviously had their head up their butt!!!!
You did a great job with this bud, with very little time too! I admire your passion, way to get things done. It's never to late to make a difference!!!
**NEW VIDEO**

Maybe I have a summer time project now...

@MiaBridgetLanie
This is what I have been saying about our surrounding forests which are being constantly perverted with oil spills from logging equipment.
My suggestion to you is to stay in your little bubble life of Bedford and never leave if you do not want to see much more worse things than this.
Thought it is nice to see people of Bedford finally realize there is a living environment around them... Sheesh...

We have to stop all of this destruction of endangered species. This area should be used as a sand piper reserve! Bedford has enough condos already!!!
