@HerrFoobert I know that's what I'm saying, and I'm a high school saxophone player. We played this for a Honors Band this past weekend, I sight read it perfectly. Nbd.
You should see the crap he does in his Saxophone quartets... this dude is such a massive beast it makes me want to just throw my saxophone out the window... Recitation Mvt. 5... hard... beautiful... to die for.
my band teacher is killing me with suspense i hear this song is hard on bari but i have never seen the music!! :( anyone have sheet music because i really want to be prepared??
hahahah bari saxes ftw in this song xD i have never used the low a so many times :P then again this is my first year as a bari :3 i love 2:45 favorite part :P
When I heard this video the first time, I was awe struck at how slow it was. When I played this song in Symphonic Band, we played it about 20-30 bps faster. It was insane but definetely fun!
I played this in my high school's wind ensemble and I must say that the bari sax part is (in my opinion) the hardest part. It also didn't help that our low brass section never practiced their part so I had to cover some of their parts as well.
its funny how many people mention that this is played slow, because my high school's top band played this much slower. It has a very different feel at different speeds
This is probably one of the easier pieces my band has performed. I think we played it last year or maybe the year before.Once you're band director chooses stuff like October or Invocation and Toccata, you tend to miss the easy stuff
@lukehendy8 All I'm saying is that this piece is easy compared to other stuff that I've played more recently. If I WANTED to be conceited,I could mention other things like scholarships but I won't
@lukehendy8 but I didnt mention all the awards and honors my band has received..oh wait I did it again. My point: you could have simply ignored my comment instead of responding with a stupid comment.I know how to really piss people off when i want.of course i wouldnt want to do that to a random stranger.or would I?
Great song! Though we played it slightly faster than this... the percussion part at 00:49 was kinda hard to play between the toms, tenor drum, and bass drum, but it sounds great when done right!
Our band played this a LOT faster than this band... I think the faster you go the better it sounds.
@DeathRover7 Oh my god yes! I love this piece because of the low brass. It gives such a deep sound and such good contrast with the light parts with the woodwinds.
@time3space1 Some of the peices that are composed for them are seriously hard we have read a few of them in my college wind ensemble and been challenged.
@BobbaAids I just finished playing in the symphonic band at TMEA. 2nd chair bass trombone. An amazing experience! We performed Hymn to a Blue Hour and it made John Mackey cry.
oh hey, i'm a percussionist and the mix meter was kinda hard to keep up with, but i do play woodwinds, so i can't be much help to you. BUT! if you practice tonguing fast, with the very tip of your tongue, making it very articulate. that can build up your speed.
@narutofreak774 chromatic mostly. its not high in fact most of it is middle range, but keeping tempo and accuracy is tough. this is easily one of the toughest pieces i've played on bass clarinet.
@narutofreak774 Depends. I'm a soprano clarinetist, but decided to play bass clarinet for a semester. I didn't find it to be technically hard. It takes a lot of air and intensity all the time.
@ChristopherHa93 wat do u play? cuz i'm a freshman euphonium player at my high school and unfortunately my past middle school teacher never let us( low brass) play anything as fast as this so i can't play the notes quick enough. can u help me?
@loveurlife77 lol its hard to learn that wen your a freshman i have trumpets in my wind ensemble that cant even double tounge that great. i was fortunate enough to be able to double and triple tounge wen i was a freshy :)
i love that it is written in one...our band director took one full rehearsal to go through the phrase-measure groupings so he could give us something to watch other than one and we ended up playing it pretty quickly. it's an amazing song and a good challenge
My band currently working on this piece in Wind Ensamble. It is sooo challenging, but so far it is my favorite ever. We might have to play it under 86.
@VirueOSITY - there's several videos of Maslanka's stuff being played in marching bands on here so I don't know if that's entirely true. Not that I don't believe you, I would just imagine the videos would have been taken down or the bands would have gotten in trouble with copyright issues. It's too bad though, to hear his music ruined on a marching field. :)
@VirtueOSITY Perhaps. I feel Maslanka doesn't translate to a high school marching band that well. There is a video on Youtube of a band playing A Child's Garden of Dreams, one of the best wind band pieces in the literature I feel, and... well, it just doesn't work on a field and edited down to under ten minutes.
@DawgDoggDog Yeah...David maslanka doesn't like any of his stuff to be performed on the field especially because of translation of stage to field. The only it is approved if he arranges it himself. It was a major question I asked him because I wanted to use the 4th symphony.
High school saxophonists... High school saxophonists everywhere...
If you think this is challenging, or if you can't sightread it, you wouldn't last five minutes as a professional.
