  • High school saxophonists... High school saxophonists everywhere...

If you think this is challenging, or if you can't sightread it, you wouldn't last five minutes as a professional.

  • @HerrFoobert I know that's what I'm saying, and I'm a high school saxophone player. We played this for a Honors Band this past weekend, I sight read it perfectly. Nbd.

  • Love this song!! especially the trumpets at 39

  • Love this piece soooo much! Its so energetic and moving

  • God, im a tenor sax, playing it now.. Shits insane.

  • Tenor and Bari sax on this requires pinkies of steel. So many notes below the staff, but the parts not as hard as it looks. It's lots of repetition.

  • ATSSB Texas All-State Symphonic band FTW!!! Don't know how I made it throug that saxophone part, but I did.

  • I played this yesterday for ATSSB Texas All-State Band. AWESOME. <3 Symphonic Band, FTW! <3

  • Played this last year on Bassoon, it's a challenge for sure, the end is my favorite part lol...

  • bari sax must be the hardest part according to al the comments and my friend matthew

  • :22ish always reminds me of a theme in lord of the rings

  • dude i did this song in my quartet and i pretty much ripped my balls off practicing this song, so freaking hard

  • You should see the crap he does in his Saxophone quartets... this dude is such a massive beast it makes me want to just throw my saxophone out the window... Recitation Mvt. 5... hard... beautiful... to die for.

  • I play this song on bari sax. So fucking difficult.

  • @TheAlmightyBassist so true haha, my high school's playing it this year. my left pinky hurts so much every time we play this

  • 2X FAST SOUNDS COOL

  • my band teacher is killing me with suspense i hear this song is hard on bari but i have never seen the music!! :( anyone have sheet music because i really want to be prepared??

  • hahahah bari saxes ftw in this song xD i have never used the low a so many times :P then again this is my first year as a bari :3 i love 2:45 favorite part :P

  • played this for high school a few years ago, he may love saxophones, but he pretty much killed the barry saxophone. still fucking amazing

  • this is soooo intense

  • This guy really loves saxophones... It's tough love.

  • i love this piece. we're playing this in wind ensemble. Finally, a piece with a challenging bari sax part!

  • @barimusicman nother barry sax man, this thing broke my left pinky, but it was worth it

  • Miss this piece. I've been lucky enough to meet the man.

  • I absolutely LOVE this song! We played this at all state this year! =D

  • @epicnessofgenandsash Iowa? What did you play? I play euph.

  • @epicnessofgenandsash We're playing this at an all state competition three weeks(: I'm sooo excited!

  • @drillteamman830 Gotta love blasting those beat 1 quarter notes in the tuba part. It's really fun.

  • I listened to this while I did my math homework. I felt like I was solving some sort of puzzle or curing a disease. Try it!

  • When I heard this video the first time, I was awe struck at how slow it was. When I played this song in Symphonic Band, we played it about 20-30 bps faster. It was insane but definetely fun!

  • @Soccerfan1115 we played this last year... And it's still stuck in my head

  • i remember this piece...gotta love tenor sax

  • got this song in band last week. can't get it out of my head, probably one of the coolest pieces i've ever gotten to play

  • We got this in band today. This is supposed to be easy compared to what we are going to do later. Last year we played Jupiter from Holst: The Planets

  • Played it for Region Band PMEA in 2010. Screwed up the audition royally haha.

  • Listening to my sym band play this, they make this recording sound like a junior high band

  • We are suppose to play this song at the MFA National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis in March!!

  • @1234imagination Hmm, me too. You wouldn't happen to go to a certain Jefferson Forest High School?

  • I played this in my high school's wind ensemble and I must say that the bari sax part is (in my opinion) the hardest part. It also didn't help that our low brass section never practiced their part so I had to cover some of their parts as well.

  • Played it at my first Region Band (PMEA). Loved the piece!!

  • @Galvin2319 PMEA 2010? What region haha. that's when I played it. shit I forget what region we were in but I know i was in district 3

  • @karlieskaggs Yes! 2010! with Dr. Stephen Gage!! what did you play??

  • @Galvin2319 Yep Dr. Gage was awesome!!! Flute II =)

  • its funny how many people mention that this is played slow, because my high school's top band played this much slower. It has a very different feel at different speeds

  • My High School Band is opening with this at the FMEA President's Concert in Janruary!

  • Played this at a band clinic at USC, this recording is sooooo slow.......

  • you're all in high school aren't you?

  • There is so much Bachian/Lisztian influence in Maslanka's writing.

  • sooo hardddd hahahah

  • I seriously think this is the best band song I have ever played...... My band director just gave it to us.

    This sounds great.

  • 20 thousand views, 57 likes and still no dislikes. Maslanka FTW :)

  • This is probably one of the easier pieces my band has performed. I think we played it last year or maybe the year before.Once you're band director chooses stuff like October or Invocation and Toccata, you tend to miss the easy stuff

  • @BlackWind121 Try sounding a little more conceited next time...

  • @lukehendy8 All I'm saying is that this piece is easy compared to other stuff that I've played more recently. If I WANTED to be conceited,I could mention other things like scholarships but I won't

  • @BlackWind121 hahaha and yet you did

  • @lukehendy8 but I didnt mention all the awards and honors my band has received..oh wait I did it again. My point: you could have simply ignored my comment instead of responding with a stupid comment.I know how to really piss people off when i want.of course i wouldnt want to do that to a random stranger.or would I?

  • @BlackWind121 haha go for it champ

  • Great song! Though we played it slightly faster than this... the percussion part at 00:49 was kinda hard to play between the toms, tenor drum, and bass drum, but it sounds great when done right!

  • with all doooooo respect, i hate this song with a fiery passion...

  • I played Bari on an arrangement and at 00:32 this part is sooooooooooooooooooooo much fun. But it uses my lowest notes so going fast was 0.o

  • playing this with my high school band for a contest tomorrow. VERY nervous. :/

  • playing this for a band contest tomorrow. VERY nervous. :/

  • Our band played this a LOT faster than this band... I think the faster you go the better it sounds.

@DeathRover7 Oh my god yes! I love this piece because of the low brass. It gives such a deep sound and such good contrast with the light parts with the woodwinds.

  • Woot low brass domination

  • I have pretty big boobs.

  • We're playing this at Woolsey Hall on Friday with my school concert band. FLUTES ALL THE WAY!

  • This helped me quite a lot recently. Just finished playing this at the University of South Florida. Who is performing?

  • We just played this at a USC (South Carolina) band clinic. powerful stuff. My favorite piece of the whole weekend.

  • @eshrooms1 I was there too! It was incredible. I wish i could have taken our honor band back home with me :/

  • @deutschlandlieben oh yeah. It was imagnificent. suite dreams was really cool too, but weird to play lol

  • @deutschlandlieben Yeah, but to my home. Bassoon?

  • @TheCatsPajamas098 yes, i do play bassoon. :X

  • @eshrooms1 Oh snap guys, me too. Suite dreams was my favorite.

  • Playing this in Portland Youth Philharmonic(: great piece

  • bassoon Part is really hard. Tie your thumb in a knot!

  • Yeah bari sax!!! I played this piece this year with the Michigan All-State Band, and it's GREAT.

  • No, best music comes from middle schoolers in Japan...

  • @time3space1 Some of the peices that are composed for them are seriously hard we have read a few of them in my college wind ensemble and been challenged.

  • I'm really happy to see that there are no dislikes on this...this is a wonderful piece of music.

  • just played this in the dallas all region concert.

best music in the world comes from america.

best music in america comes from texas.

best music in texas comes from dallas.

  • @mjsbaby21 nope, TMEA all-state is hosted in San Antonio... I'd have to say that's the best in Texas.

  • @BobbaAids I just finished playing in the symphonic band at TMEA. 2nd chair bass trombone. An amazing experience! We performed Hymn to a Blue Hour and it made John Mackey cry.

  • David maslanka is my dad's college teacher. He went to kingsborough community college :)

  • I loved playing the timp part on this....goosebumps just thinkin about it.

  • @FlamHighFive I totally feel you on that one. :)

  • hey concertbandland, who is performing this?

  • I just played this tonight for my region band concert. AMAZING song, very challenging though.

  • Who is playing this? They're really good.

  • oh hey, i'm a percussionist and the mix meter was kinda hard to keep up with, but i do play woodwinds, so i can't be much help to you. BUT! if you practice tonguing fast, with the very tip of your tongue, making it very articulate. that can build up your speed.

  • my school band is playing this, eh i like it way better when its slower

  • So I'ma Freshman and I'm playing this in my high school wind Ensemble as a Bass Clarinet player. Is the Bass Clarinet line hard?

  • @narutofreak774 chromatic mostly. its not high in fact most of it is middle range, but keeping tempo and accuracy is tough. this is easily one of the toughest pieces i've played on bass clarinet.

  • @andrewMAUTHE Lol I was practicing my part it's very hard... .BUT I LOVE IT!

  • @narutofreak774 Depends. I'm a soprano clarinetist, but decided to play bass clarinet for a semester. I didn't find it to be technically hard. It takes a lot of air and intensity all the time.

  • I LOVE this song..i was soo happy that i got to play this once.....it's soo difficult.

  • @ChristopherHa93 wat do u play? cuz i'm a freshman euphonium player at my high school and unfortunately my past middle school teacher never let us( low brass) play anything as fast as this so i can't play the notes quick enough. can u help me?

  • @ARodBiz try doubletongueing?

  • @loveurlife77 lol its hard to learn that wen your a freshman i have trumpets in my wind ensemble that cant even double tounge that great. i was fortunate enough to be able to double and triple tounge wen i was a freshy :)

  • @loveurlife77 never heard of it :D

  • When you get the bells just right in the beginning it sounds just like a choir is singing and really adds to the effect.

  • By the way. The St. Olaf Band put out a CD of some of his music. Mother Earth, being the first on disc 1.

    Check it out!

  • FASTER! SoooOoo slow!

  • our band director gave us this piece few days ago and 300 people are gonna play this all together :) hard tho.... -__-

  • i love that it is written in one...our band director took one full rehearsal to go through the phrase-measure groupings so he could give us something to watch other than one and we ended up playing it pretty quickly. it's an amazing song and a good challenge

  • My band currently working on this piece in Wind Ensamble. It is sooo challenging, but so far it is my favorite ever. We might have to play it under 86.

  • played this as high school freshman ,,,,,and i beasted it ...to bad i quit band

  • this song is kick**

  • who is playing this recording?

  • I loved playing trumpet on this my senior year of HS. Absolutely amazing song!

  • BRIAN! haha.

  • So this song is pretty much beastly.

  • I love playing the bass line on this song! its EPIC! XD

  • my band's director just gave us this peice today, its cool, but hard...

  • I agree, this piece is awesome but it was definitely very hard to put together. Good luck! :) it will be worth it in the end.

  • @snakeeyes119 my band director gave us this piece to sight read and he played a recording

  • this piece is great just conducting in one is hard but following is difficult

  • i'm playing this piece in a marching band, and the tempo is much faster. I think RBVTBONE got that arrangment

  • what band are you in? this must be hard for a marching show

  • Leigh High School. And ya, it is pretty difficult, thats why we have so few visuals lol

  • um Maslanka doesn't allow any of his pieces to be arranged for marching band, so if you are playing then your band is kinda violating copyright laws

  • @VirueOSITY - there's several videos of Maslanka's stuff being played in marching bands on here so I don't know if that's entirely true. Not that I don't believe you, I would just imagine the videos would have been taken down or the bands would have gotten in trouble with copyright issues. It's too bad though, to hear his music ruined on a marching field. :)

  • They do usually get taken down. And I know that BOA will basically tell you to eff off if they see Maslanka in your program.

And it is sad because Mother Earth would actually be really good for Marching Band.

  • @VirtueOSITY Perhaps. I feel Maslanka doesn't translate to a high school marching band that well. There is a video on Youtube of a band playing A Child's Garden of Dreams, one of the best wind band pieces in the literature I feel, and... well, it just doesn't work on a field and edited down to under ten minutes.

  • @DawgDoggDog Yeah...David maslanka doesn't like any of his stuff to be performed on the field especially because of translation of stage to field. The only it is approved if he arranges it himself. It was a major question I asked him because I wanted to use the 4th symphony.

  • We played it much faster.

  • oh really? that's interestin... I think this is actually the proper tempo, but to each his own. :)

  • @RBVTBONE We played it much faster, too. I think this recording is below the marked tempo.

  • @RBVTBONE Yeah.....this is the correct tempo. So you just played it incorrectly.

  • @bja111 xD that's just a matter of interpretation..

  • @RBVTBONE So did we
