  • Thank You for all Your videos with Joseph Schmidt! I'm living at the boarder to Switzerland and now, just have learned about Joseph Schmidt, I'll go to tje jewish cemetry in Zuerich to visit him as it's possible nowadays ...

  • Sorry, war ein lapsus- Thanks!!!!!!!

  • ... he loved German and was most successful there.

It was a tragic life for a great singer. Had he died in America nobody would talk about him.

In history and today are many cases like we talk about the Nazis and Germans.. I feel we should do something today against all this crime we see everyday at the news. Who knows what they will talk about us in 50 years ...

I am German and have many jewish friends, none of them ever talked bad about the Germans ... as they has culture and education.

  • Thank your for this beautiful piece! I'm discovering Joseph Schmidt. He touches my heart with every song. Does anyone have the lyrics for this tango by any chance? I want to sing it too...

  • Odnalazłam, wysłuchałam, zachwyciłam ( się). Dziękuję! G.

  • So why does some idiot give me a `-- cause he or she is and an idiot

  • I was touched and moved by crimsontoxic as a Jew and a caring person, that takes guts to say but then look at the great Germans, think of Shindler and many others who could not help even if they wanted too, good and bad are in all people and many Germans where good. They loved Schmidt and made him a huge star. sad yes but we have the recordings. Rest in peace

  • Thankyou for saying that. Not all Germans were nazis; it was the nazis, not the German people as a whole, who were at fault, and I bet there were a lot of German people who were brain-washed by that nasty little "man", who were very sorry they voted him in. They have been accused of "standing by," and doing nothing. What could most of them do? Be shot at dawn for trying, and still not able to make a difference. What a terrible, tragic situation.

  • Unfortunately most of the Germans were Nazis or Nazis supporters. I think that about 90% were so. Anti Semitism was then and today the bad fuel that ignite disasters. Add to that that more than half of the Europeans population, in each nation, was also Jew haters. The others "stood by" and said bye bye to the Jews that were sent to be slaughtered. No wonder that they brought catastrophe on themselves and on the Jews.

  • WWII - so many killed, an entire generation. God bless them all. Joseph Schmidt the greatest tenor of them all. I love him.

  • Simply the Greatest Tenor in History

  • I believe you are correct 100%.Beautiful voice, genuine feeling, straight from the heart---- what more could one ask for?

  • I'm German, I'm young. And it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear him, every time I think what they - "we" - did to him. It's a tragedy. Never ever let something like that happen again!

  • Others have to learn from the German repentance before killing more brothers and starting stupid wars to defend just a myth. All countries have good and bad people but in some we see only the bad acting now. Learn from history please.

  • I know a pub in one-horse Town way out in the Atlantic ocean -- right back in the late 1950s with a voice like that ,you would have been welcomed as a great God... They adored a good human voice... Those people cannot hear you now... but it is a thoiught, maudlin and vexatious though it be, it keeps me warm..

  • By the way he goes up to an easy High C here near the end of the song.

  • Just heard Bikel two weeks ago in Chicago do a concert and he in his older years performs very well, sounds younger then he is. This is a nice post, thanks

  • Hauntingly beautiful. Thank you for this video.

  • Yes, he is hypnotizing us with his sincerity and strength of the message: "when you are unfair...".

  • I see now that you had already heard it !

  • Herr doktor must order to me don't enter in thia youtube nevermore...i'm dying of nostalgia!!!!!this is so beautiful..so beautiful...so pure!.......

  • Qurido Nina...:-)

It must have been an inspiration...:-) ! I have just prepared a video with M.Simone and will upload next week (these days I am mourning a bit, trace of which you may find in my latest videos).

As for Jewish, you may find all the series at my channel, here. Welcome !

  • Thanks, sir, for your kindness to me!!

    Nina

  • Thnkas, Pane Jurku!

  • Teodore Bikel did quite a few old Yiddish Theatre songs that I liked. I wish Joseph had lived long enough to have recorded some more cantorial lithurgy! He had so much potential and would have been very well loved in the USA! Probably been a bigger star than he ever was in Europe!

  • This is 'eternal' consideration and question - "if". We do not know. Let us be happy having such wonderful legacy of his.

    Thank you.

  • Can't wait for your old iddish songs.

    Thank you much in advance.

  • The way to them - in the meantime - will by old Polish tangos and you are invited. Thanks.

  • Waiting. Neshama is a Hebrew word for SOUL, Neshume with Yiddish accent. Happy New Year, Shana Tova.

  • Szczęśliwego Nowego Roku ! - In my language ...:-)

  • Thank you Jurek for the excellent collection.

  • Be my guest. In my plan a cycle of jewish-yiddish old songs.

  • a singer mit a neshume

  • what is 'neshume' ?...

  • I imagined how Schmidt's interpretation could move you.

Nothing is eternal... the tape with Nowicka's rendition just spoiled - some day. Regrets.

  • Descripttion corrected: rec. January 1930 - Berlin.

  • Thank you very much for this highly interesting comparison between a very lyrical Schmidt (brilliant as ever!) and the maybe more dramatic Weber version!

  • The other Tango-Lied in this exceptional performance which actually moves me, is on the way...:-)
