At a time when the Christmas celebrations of indigenous Christians in Iraq, Pakistan, Egypt, and elsewhere are being darkened by persecution and massacre, it is heartening to hear this peaceful hymn, sung in Aramaic, the Savior's mother tongue.
I don't know tones, but I'm pretty sure it's in maqam nehawand, with hijaz on the 5th.
This would be almost the same as a western minor scale, except I'm pretty sure the vocalists are hitting microtones when they sing hijaz (it sounds to me like the instruments are just playing notes found on the piano, in which case the accompaniment seems to just be a minor scale.)
That's how I hear it, but I'm no expert. It's fun to try and analyze it.
That is an enormous help, now I actually have something to go on! As soon as I get my instrument set up, I'll play around with it, and report back what I find :)
i sang this in my church choir. It is my favorite song of all time and it is a very beautiful song that reminds me of a lulabi i love it and thank u so much for the vid.
oh, what a beauty!and how wonderful is that Jesus´ kindness, compassion and love unite so different people from completely different regions of the world. Thank you, dear brother!Natali
Very beautiful hymn, I am of syriac origin , I can appreciate with pleasure the chants of my brothers from the East, chaldeans, assyrians and all Christian of the Middle East too.
Yes, the Chaldean Catholic Church is in communion with the Pope of Rome, the Vicar of Saint Peter. But our own Patriarch is the Vicar of Saint Thomas, and we consider him equal to the Pope, even though he is not the first among equals.
@AgiosGiorgios Please, could you explain: why your Pope is the Vicar of Saint Thomas when it is said that St. Thomas is the patron for India? Arent't Chaldeans stablished in Iraq?
@AndreaSPitaim Saint Thomas is the patron of India and did found the church there as well. However, the churches in India were always and some still are, under either the jurisdiction of the Syriac Orthodox Church or the Assyrian Church of the East which he founded First. The Catholic Indian churches such as the Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara are independent of those previous churches.
@walkingondewater of course we do we are Catholics and PROUD unless they have converted to something else but all Chaldeans were born Catholic until now adays
Que Bellissima Voice of Baghdad this is beautiful :o) No matter who you are, where your from, what religion you are I want to wish all the best for the New Year for your family and friends. Jammie
This is the quire of the Church I go to singing!!!!!!!!!! They have multiple beautiful CD's & all have amazing voices! Unfortunately, most of the girls quit due to certain reasons & new girls formed another new quire with new voices!
I am a non religious person, and doesn't believe in any of those ideologies, but I did enjoy very much this very beautiful music and this magical language sounding like an echo of the Ancient time. Thank you.
A lovely, haunting melody. Are you aware of any English translation of these lyrics, or where they may be found?
