Hellraiser was a shock for me when I saw it for the first time (I was 12). Those freaks that came strolling thru the wall and hook someone up. Such sights were shown to me I would never forget. I always thought the tagline: "Demons to some, angels to others" is what this movie is all about. One of the best horror movies that was made in the eighties, hell, even still.

I know what you mean, before watching the original movie, I had seen parts from the sequels in which he IS the main villan. But in the first movie, they were the reason for the REAL badguy, Frank's death and torture.

@JAMES2K2COLD because they became the most legendary scenes, but the film is actually intended to be a twisted tale of erotica and deception, the box and the cenobites give it a demonic and terrifying twist, but overall the film is not solely based on them, they are merely a consequence of franks actions and lifestyle, but pinhead became a horror icon and I suppose the sequels ventured in that direction as the original tale was good enough to be left alone
