Die Andrea Doria war wohl das größte und schnellste Schiff unter Italienischer Flagge. Von Bildern und Videos her muss es ein sehr schönes Schiff gewesen sein. Immer ein bißchen Erinnerung an die Titanic, wenn ich diesen Namen höre. Hier mussten auch leider 46 Menschen Ihr Leben lassen.

I hate to admit that I am old enough to remember this. What was remarkable was the very small loss of life. The Stockholm had an "icebreaker" bow which minimized her damage, but ripped the Andrea Doria wide open.

They later found (alive!) a passenger from the Doria trapped in what was left of the bow of the Stockholm!!

OK, I won't say I've got perfect recall and you may be completely right. But I distinctly remember the media at the time stressing "icebreaker bow". I suspect you are right and the media then was about as accurate as they are now; not very.

@TheSFCRetired, okay. I was just looking at the actual shape of the bow from videos and pictures and could find any typical icebreaker features from its shape. Perhaps the media referred to the ice strengthening, which reduced the amount of absorbed energy because the bow didn't crumble that much?

believe it or not, the ship Stokcholm, who crashed with Andrea Doria in 1956 is still in service as ms Athena, completely rebuild and owned by classic international cruises, who also has ms Arion, the former yugoslav cruiser, ms Funchal-a legendary ocean liner and many more

I love how classic news reels of the 30's, 40's and 50's used dramatic music. If they made a news report with such music today, it just wouldn't work. In those earlier days of big news reports, seems like the music made it more like a scene from a movie and enhanced the significance of the event.

the Stockholm hit the Andrea Doria in the side i think, hense the listing to one side. But the Stockholm lost most of its bow, but manged to sail back to New York. The Andrea Doria stayed on one side for about 7-12 hours. which gave rescuers enough time to get all the people off the ship. then, it just sank. not that tragic, except for the loss of a beautiful ship. :(

you'd be amazed how hard it is to maneuvre ships this size. they don't stop on a dime or turn like some car. besides both the captains of the two ships misunderstood what the other was about to do. who was to blame? the trial pointed to the captain of the Andrea Doria

@McLarenMercedes: that is not true: the trial ended before judgement. the maritime laws grant shipowners a reduced liability on damages on carried goods and passengers provided due diligenge.

Trial was about to prove both ships were going too fast in the fog so companies agreed to retire the claim. Moreover swedish company was an important customer of shipyards branch of Italian Line.

US navy research found truth years later: swedish officer wrongly read the radar and caused the disaster.

I favorited titanic first but then whenever I search something I learn about a new tragedy, lol, so then I found out about Lusitania and my grandfather was alive during the andrea doria incident so he taught me about that, and my grandmothers friend was a survivor of the titanic so I know alot of disasters so TITANIC and LUSITANIA are my two favorites, but if I had to choose one I would choose TITANIC.

US navy research found the TRUTH years later: ships were in a dense fog, going on opposite direction on parallel course, Stockholm on the right of Doria (she was in recommended route, Stockholm not). The distance between ships should have been 1 mile at the nearest point.

Doria slightly modified her course on the left in order to increase minimum distance, while swedish officer on the deck wrongly read radar and suddenly turn right crossing Doria course...BOOM !

It collided with the HMS Hawke in 1911 and had to go back to H&W in Belfast for repairs which delayed work on the Titanic, thus pushing back its launch & maiden voyage by almost a month, changing history all by itself.

The Andrea Doria had 1,706 passengers and crew on board the moment she was hit by the Stockholm. 51 people were killed, 46 on the Andrea Doria, and 5 on the Stockholm. And I am actually right because I have read at least 2 books that have these exact statistics.
