did you see my colourization of venus pressing a button from fireball xl5?i did that in photoshop frame by frame.i'm working on one from supercar where dr beaker is holding a phial them it explodes.
i've tried fireball xl5 in colour using refs from the colourised version by legend films and colour photos in photoshop.if you like to see them i'll send a link to you.
Yes - perhaps I should even have used shots from Caves of Androzani, or Attack of the Cybermen to take refs for sky and sand, but tbh its doiwn to artistic licence a bit.
when i was colourizing this scene i noticed the top of the hill was trembling loads because you almost have to choose where to mark out the sand thanks to the stupid focus on the camers :@ and if you look on the doctor who classic site , telos looks a lot redder than that.
No, I didn't know that. I know that Babelfish has worked on clips for POTD3 and Ian is still clubbing around a bunch of colourists to redo Dinosaurs1. Not sure how far they've got though.
Re Ambassadors, how far have they got? I've just focussed on ep2 at the moment. I've gone back to the drawing board on how I'm colourising as have found a nice workaround to make the roto masks much quicker.
Both Levine's colourist and the RT pretty much had most of episode 5 done. The similarities between the two, who were working independently, were striking. Levin had a plan to have the whole lot coloured using his own finance. A noble aim which sadly did not come off.
A few years ago Peter Finkelstone did a few scenes from Invasion of the Dinosairs and very good they were too.
I've seen the NTSC version of the story. I must admit I like ep 5 - its the one where the story comes together.
Finklestone's IOTD ep1 - wasn't that shown at a PanoptiCon in the 90's? I thought that was pitched as one a US company had done? There was a lot of talk at the time on how much it would cost to do one episode. As I recall it as a Photoshop job. Not badly done though.
Ok - so with this in mind, which stories haven't been colourised? I planned to do War Games (when I retired!)
I do not believe War Games has been tried. The efforts are on the colour Pertwee's to get them out on DVD in colour over the next 4 years as the run finishes in 2012.
I'll give it a go over the summer (at least a couple of seconds anyway). I've had a breakthrough at this end - can take the rotoscope now much quicker. Just done the Hancocks Half Hour ident (16 secs) in 30 mins!
Well, for what its worth - I am. Only job pressures get in the way. I have got the ok to work on an episode but we;ve agreed Ambassadors of Death as it needs a bit or work doing to it and this can be justified to the powers that be at BBC.
TOTC is a labout of love though. :)
Project page on Facebook for those interested - 'colourisation project'.
That's gonna be great! You're doing a very good job. Its like they were filmed in colour at the time. You should try and pursuade the BBC if they'd accept colour versions of 60s episodes. The whole tomb of the cybermen would be ace if it was in colour.
Pha! Not gonna happen. Too many techies believe that its not viable + who wants 60s Who in colour anyway?
I know I do but the BBC have got it in their heard s their early work is 'Film Noir' or something. So why mess with the Holy Grail?
Well I'll show you (if I may) what is possiblem as can other colourists. I'm not the only one in the UK doing this and we're not a dying breed either! :)
Yeah for once the black and white actually looks better. It makes the planet seem more alien somehow, whereas colour makes it seem too much like earth.
Hmm. A bit of an excuse I know but encoding down to FLV for Youtube has taken a bit of the detail out.
I've tried again tweaking the colours with a more subtle and paler sky, also more 'orangier' sand. (For the Dr Who fans out there I've had Caves of Androzani in mind)
Seems like this one is the winner of the two. The captions were originally created on white plastic film using letraset and superimposed onto the film, intending for it to be white.
Meh. Always imagined that local to be more icy than rocky, but whatever.

Thank you.
I'm working on Ambassadors of Death ep 2 at the moment. TOTC is on the back burner.

Great news. But you do know that someone close to the RT, Jonathan Wood IIRC, has done some work on it as well.
Oh, and there was also the Ian Levine fiasco with part 5 ;)
Good luck all the same, you have the same sort of talent as Babelfish.

I think this is brilliant and it works perfectly. Something the BBC should consider (it would make the old ones even better)

I'd like to and have done more. But I'm restricted as to how much if indeed any I should show the public.
This is a research project only so I'm afraid you'll only get tasters.
+ I've a full time job as a teacher! If I had an army of colourists.......

Still - nice to see it in yellow too, eh?

From a TECHNICAL point of view. In fact people I've shown both to favour the yellow captions over the white.
