how come every1 is saying tennis is easier than TT! u have to run like crazy to hit back the balls in tennis, while u r in a space of a meter probably in TT . in tennis smtimes u have to jump, strong arm, choose right angle, and most of tht its outdoor mostly so weather plays a part as well, and thousands of crowds watching in the court. maybe in table tennis the reaction must be super fast, but no need for lots of power to run kilometers in TT. both games are gr8 but not same level of energy needed
@Padistyler He had some medical issue, dont know if it was his back or his shoulder, etc... but he wasnt really trying... if not, he probably would have won, even though I love Schlager :D
if Schlager was born 10 years earlier, he would be better then Waldner. Waldner just didn't had the competition Schlager had a couple of years ago. Like Federer does in tennis.
@Compantino hahaha FAIL, i play competitive tennis, table tennis and badminton and you wanna know whats the easiest out of them? no doubt table tennis is the easiest.
@broro100 then you're in a low leveled table tennis competition. I think a tabletennis player would beat a tennis player harder in tabletennis than the tennis player would in tennis
@misterivo850 dude i beat many members of my national teams already, i had a friend who is a swedish national member i i beated him 4-1 pretty easily.
@misterivo850 i play all these racket sports at the national level or at least close to, im ranked in the top 20 of the country for badminton, i beated the top ten tennis players of my age group in my country many times although i wasnt ranked very high cus i don't really join many competitions, and as far as table tennis is concerned i can beat the national members no problem. infact don't argue how hard table tennis is compared to tennis, badminton is the hardest.
@Compantino in table tennis the ball is very light-weighted plus the table is small, its easy to control where the ball goes. In tennis the weight of the racket and ball makes it a lot harder to control. try this in both table tennis and tennis, out of ten how many times can you hit a forehand into a corner / down the line with lots of power?
no se si se dieron cuenta pero waldner no estaba jugando como siempre lo emos visto es raro por que sera estaba practicamente jugando no copitiendo no tenia animo de ganar
A Legend is getting old.he was the best for a long time.now its time for other players like kenta matsudaira, chen qi,ma long, ovtcharov and maybe timo boll^^
waldner had devlped a shoulder prpolem in training previous day and was seem by a doctor and advice not 2 play but his view was that the public pay good money to watch there heros so he siad he was playin.
Don't forget that Schlager is a very good player too, but what is amazing is that I've never seen Waldner complaining of an injury, he is always still.
Actually to be honest, I think Waldner does look a little out of it. Maybe a little buzzed, PUI? (Pong under the influence.) He's definitely rubbing his shoulder and looks like he has a headache. Can't really forehand, but he managed to take a game off Schlager. So even if he is buzzed, he can "hang" with the best. ;)
Actually to be honest, I think Waldner does look a little out of it. Maybe a little buzzed, PUI? (Pong under the influence.) He's definitely rubbing his shoulder and looks like he has a headache. Can't really forehand, but he managed to take a game off Schlager. So even if he is buzzed, he can "hang" with the best. ;)
Look, Waldner's a legendary player and all, and no doubt Schlager idolizes him, but by now people are deluding themselves if they think he is still a match for the current top players. Waldner is old and his time is past, no matter how good he once was, he had no chance in this match. There are NO excuses.
And Primorac is 39 vs Persson. And yes, Waldner got to the semis in Athens. I see your point absolutely. The point I was trying to make is that no matter how great a player once was, you can't just make excuses if they lose matches. Schlager will never acheive what Waldner has, but he's no chump. And in the end, it's a low-stakes match anyway.
Well, If THAT were the case, I'd definitely say that Waldner would win. They're both smart players but Waldner's technique far surpasses that of Schlager's.
It happened earlyer, that Waldner hurt, but played on. Like in some 90's WC match (somewhere in the best 8), against Save. During a backspin, he hurt his middle finger-nail. It happens sometimes anyway to anyone of us. He played on,lost his game, and Save celebrated like he won the national lottery:-) He was pathetic. And where is Save now?:-))) Nowhere, like all the other (Samsonov, Gatien, Fetzner, cheenese...), who had come, and gone. Only Waldner is always there.
You're insane if you think that Samsonov has come and gone. He's 30-something and he's still in the top 10. Samsonov is still kicking, and Waldner is retired. His best times are long gone.
hi all...i watched many a match with the wizzard playing...i have shown this clip to a old table tennis bud in Kalmar sweden where waldner played..he had being traing right upto this event and pulled a joint in his shoulder..he was in alot of pain on the day but out of goodness decided to play..waldner not the player for giving bad entertainment...just look at your footballers rapped in cotton bloody wool for a cut or a sprain...waldner is the entertainer with out q.
Most of the people does not know, but it is true:-))
We saw him play slightly drunk (or just having a hangover) in Hungary:-)) It was funny. Anyway, he can be hurt, or having a hangover, he is, what he is. The one and only. Thats it. Many things can happen in 20-24years. Think about it
You utter breast "botezatucezar" Ofcourse Waldners not drunk!? Hes a professional athlete! Potentially he may drink at events that are almost like exhibitions, for example we saw him at the bar after playing Ma Wenge at the Masters in England. But lets be honest this man is an idol towards pretty much everyone in table tennis, and he wouldnt be drunk at a major event especially when playing against someone like Schalager
if wang ligin play whit waldner wang ligin will win but if waldner in 1989 played whit wang ligin will loose! soory but i am a brazilian and i don´t understand ingles!! uahauahau
watch him play in 1987, 1989, 1992, 1997, 2000 or 2004. during play, he doesnt usually rub his shoulders or do stretches or make faces like he's got a headache. he's not even standing the way he normally does during receive of service. it might also explain why he lost 3-1 to schlager and why the audience is so subdued even though it's waldner playing!
hey paynizz...you say that wang liquin, ma lin, wang hao, etc. are not better than waldner in his active time...but how you can comparate them...it was another times...balls of 38 mm...another players...
i think waldner is fucking great, but the style of chinese players is from another dimention!!, serve and atak...fucking awesome!! for example, i can't, between kim taek soo and ryu seung min, compare them...it's just not right...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@darkblue84 You can compare them, actually. Waldner played through several generations of Chinese table tennis players and was still world-class. His last big appearance was in the 2004 Olympics where he beat Ma Lin with relative ease and managed to push WLQ to the edge in the playofffs. He is quite an amazing player. The style of the Chinese isn't necessarily better. They're very robotic and aren't as creative in points when compared to european players. Plus waldners touch was great
All those Chinese, like Wang Hao, Ma Lin or Wang Liqin are nowadays better TT player, but they´re not better than Waldner if you compare his complete active Time.
Some points he played and still plays are just impossible for every one else, cuz he got most feeling, most talent, most everything.

He just plays for fun, not for winning.
I saw Waldner few month ago, bashing Chen Weixingeasily.
waldner is playing for fun nowadays, win or lose it dont matter much to him anymore. he plays because people love to watch him. and no matter what you people say about waldner, be it positive or negative, you cant take away that he is the greatest table tennis player of all time.
okay! lets say! waldner is one of the best tabletennis players ever! and he really was successful! but now is is just playing for fun! and you really cant say he is NOW one of the best players on earth! he is a talent, right, but now he is out of competition! you agree with me´?
