if you're gonna do that curl with a flat iron it'll straighten your hair while you're curling it...i know that sounds strange but once you do it you'll see what i mean. i have REALLY curly hair and i do this sometimes.

yes.smoke coming from your hair is normal if your using alot of heat.but i just think thats wat too much heat and your moving the flat iron way too slow.thats not healthy for your hair at all.

It either smokes because A) Her hair is completly dry and the iron is too hot B) Her hair is still wet or C) she applied a heat protectant product and when you pass the iron through it, the heat dries what ever product you have in your hair.

there are very cheap ones on the market. i recently bought a revlon flat iron for $35 at a local hair supply store. it works awesome, and it curls too! but, if its ur first straightener, i would buy a more expensive one, just to be safe.

YEP, you need the hair spray or it will just fall flat. I would try one like Rusk because it gives you a nice hold without making your hair hard!!
