  • Good to see young people interested in science! Very creative and dilagent. Fortunately, you will go much further in life then those that think is is easier to spend Mom and Dads money to BUY one. Also keep in mind that NERDS are the HOTTIES of the future ..... 10 years from now we will see who is flexing the success! Keep up the good work. I need to find a safer method for my nerd 6 year old, grins.

  • lol i'd never be able to do this my teacher dosen't trust us enough!

  • my lava lamp broke, but I've still got the wax, do I only need some distilled water to make a new one ???

  • @ItchyTheKitty not just distilled water, but some salt as well. if it were pure distilled water, the wax would always float the the top when heated. the salt lowers the density.

  • Stuck at step one...

  • do we have to use a specific type of wax to make this? what's the name of the wax we can use for this?

  • @violinist881 the wax is not special at all. we smashed open one of those worship candles that they sell, (the long tall clear glass ones). those candles come per dyed/colored.

  • this is sheer crap, better buy a lava lamp rather than wasting such alot of time

  • can you dye the water? or will that ruin the solution?

  • @FTGAITSBTD you should be able to dye it without a problem. just keep in mind that what is really important is the density

  • Dude, you deserved an "F"; it's perchloroethane, NOT "perchlorate"! Not even REMOTELY similar!

  • just take a shit in a jar and put it at the top of your lamp, they float too

  • I'm just buying one. Sheesh!

  • hold on a sec while i pull all these materials out of my ass.......

  • WOW, TOO DETAILED MATERIALS! *A*

  • I can't hear over the music...

  • got any ideas on how to get the oxidation of a lava lamp? ive had mine over 9 years and it looks like dirt is caked on to it and glass cleaner does nothing

  • i stop the vid as soon as i saw paraffin wax

  • fuck that I'll just buy one

  • mehtmatiouse

    !

  • thats hard

  • Scientific. =D I love science.

  • I rather just buy one

  • name of song?

  • i wann a lava lame

  • looks like a meth lab to me

  • where the hell do you get this shit and...... how much is all this? I can go to spencers buy a lava lamp for exactly $21.45 and in about 1 hour

  • They make Lava Lamp near volcano lol

  • that was borring dood

  • god all i did was put water alka seltzer vegtable oil food coloring and poof lava lamp

  • I were you I'd put a disclaimer @ the beginning saying something along the lines of 'If you're inexperienced w/chemistry & measurements & if you're not willing to obtain the proper equipment, ingredients & safety gear, you should NOT TRY THIS..' LOL I say this because I grew up around a lot of those gems of intelligence that make disclaimers absolutely necessary to protect your less likely to blow up butts. Otherwise, great video!

  • Lemme just grab my perchlorate thats been sittin around in my room

  • @pizza87760 very funny...

  • @arnricepicker very cool (music)

  • @pizza87760 dude, that's not funny at all. Mixing bleach and ammonia will produce chlorine gas which is FATAL IF INHALED.

  • @pizza87760 Actually not that funny, because some kid will try it and get themselves killed

  • @pizza87760 final product which is mustard gas if anyone doesnt know that and actually thinks about trying this dont just look up mustard gas cuz thats what this mixture makes

  • This guy totaly read his conclusion.Nice tutorial.;-)

  • @reapa69 i sure did. i had it all written out. i should have slowed down while reading it :P

  • a few questions. does the perc and ethylene glycol needs to be pure? does every type of wax have the same density or will some types of wax fail to work.

  • WOW! Sciency stuffs is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO cool. Thumbs up if you thinks so too!

  • @catdotty can you go on messages i sent you like a thousand messages and you never right back!

  • umm...soo ye i dont think i would buy all those materials and take all tht time -_-

id raether go to a store a purchase one

  • Crikey! I think i will just go out and buy a lava lamp! LOL! :)

  • I'm so glad this is without alka selzer...so soft

    thanks man

  • can i simply ad wax and oil to a bottle and but it in my lava lamp base???

  • @foxarasta, The wax needs to have a gravity higher than the solution otherwise you will not get the convective effect required. So in one word, no.

  • Wow real cool now im going to...... Buy one in a store O_0

  • now this was a real video for making lava lamp, many thanks!!

  • I see a lot of people saying buy a lava lamp it is cheaper. those poor people will never understand.. That was awsome!

  • Why cant you do a video without feeling the need to put a SHITTY music as beckground?

    Do you think its cooler?

    Smarter?

People has to turn off audio!

  • @giovannicolombomi2 Why can't YOU watch a FREE "how to" video without being a whiney little bitch and finding something to complain about?

    Seriously, GFY asshole.

  • @AtheistsAreGODS because you dont understand how distressfull is to turn off the audio every time you are on a video like your.

You think to be "cool" by adding such "noise" to a video but you only make the ears of the viewers screaming for mercy.

  • parafin wax is used for candles!

  • BUY A LAVA LAMP LIKE 15 DOLLARS? AND SAVE YOUR TIME BITCH

  • @superrobbie12, For the people who enjoy chemistry, the money isn't important.

  • Where can you get perchlorate?

  • @Tursamizable you should be able to get that from dry cleaners. i know that they use that chemical. you could also try other sources. it should be noted that perchlorate, especially the salts from it are extremely flammable/ explosive. we used non chlorinated brake cleaner. even though it was non chlorinated, for whatever reason the experiment still worked

  • @arnricepicker I did this and got the same perchlorate from autozone

  • I have a question, you said, that if the ooze does not sink, we should add more perchlorate... how do you do that? we have to add it, or heat the ooze and then add the perc, or to make a new solution of wax and perc?

  • @SirDenisX i believe you need to add more wax. that should increase the density. add more perchlorate to decrease the density

  • if i end up looking like the chick at 1:19 its not worth it

  • I'm pretty shure buying a lavalamp is cheaper

  • i wanna drink it :)

  • hey can u upload the first track u used in the video which u said is 'Bb techno' by 'John Merrill'. i couldnt find it and i want it so badlyfor certain reasons..

  • It'll be cheaper to just buy one.

  • ermm. is there an alternative to both the perchlorate and ethylene glycol used in this experiment? wat is the use of both of these substances?

  • I had a giant lava lamp made by a company in California, and all it contained was about 2 gallons of salt water, a pint of glycerin with red dye, and a 150 watt bulb. The "lava" was transparent red and projected beautiful reflections on the walls. There were no other chemicals, and the salinity of the water determined the behaviour of the glycerin.

  • sah mo han ihr e macke? wo willschen das ganze zeisch hergrien

  • i have a real lava lamp its blue water and white wax its cool

  • THIS SHOULD BE CALLED HOW TO SET FIRE TO YOUR HOUSE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That is cool!

  • all i had was water

  • do I really need the ethylene glycol? cuz, because it's a toxic, I won't get it for school... and I need to do this as a school project.

another question, may I heat it up by a 25W lamp? (at the end, with the water.. and how long would it take?) it was ready for another project, but I changed it at last minute..

I'd like you to answer me as fast as you can.. thank you!

  • @BlackCat11896 sorry for not getting back to your faster. most chemistry labs should have ethylene glycol. if you cannot get it, try antifreeze, which contains ethylene glycol. i think the 25W lamp would work, just make sure that it is high intensity, that the ones in normal lava lamps

  • just buy a lava lite for 10.00 dollars. what a waste of time for a shitty facsimile.

  • very complicate

  • wow... i am speachless..

  • hey i go to castles and costers on that day 4/16/10

  • I hate wax lava lamps. I want to make a better one using specific weights liquids so it doesn't solidify like wax does when the lamp is off.

  • i got a better way.....BUY ONE

  • Alllll fuckin nerds

  • @Ahmadmalik6 maybe, but you're still a fuckin raghead terrorist

  • agree with him V . . . LOL!

  • boring

  • dont care

  • i didnt understand a friken word... :p

  • Nice explanation!

  • I only had salt....

  • hahahahha

  • fuck you nos es así niños sales hiso caca ose sheet

  • @MultiKp2 mae porque dejas comentarios en español como que holy shit

  • its cool but so much complicate

  • Really cool, but i'd buy onw so i know its gunna work myself.

    Nifty experiment i guess.

  • great...

  • whats the name of this song?

  • Dudedudemoney & hunterstory7 both shut the fuck up like pathetic dudedudemoney your fighting on youtube describing your family.... and how much better you are then hunterstory7 and both you deadshits are saying how buff you are... tuff shits yeah sweet

  • dude shut up dont be a jerk.. your probably acne filled...

  • I'm sure you aren(T) im 28 with a wife and a baby girl on the way.. your probably like 15 or 13 so dont even try, It doesn't matter if he plays WoW.. I play WoW and I HATE school.. Im not like addicted.. I have WoW and im still buffer than you.. I can guarantee

  • What is di-water?

  • Di-water i believe is distilled water which a fancy way of saying Pure water :D

  • @albokid52 Thank you! I also think it's also called "deionized water"

  • @albokid52

    Basicly pure H2O :D

  • @ZviagintsevKrasenkov It's short for deionized.

  • @ZviagintsevKrasenkov essentially it is chemistry grade water. as pure as water can get. haha

  • fail...

  • MUCH Easier to buy one :P

  • id rather buy one lol

  • @Baberuth321 but no money

  • @chengling1000 practically u do need money to buy the ingrediants lol

  • ide rather buy one : )

  • Very very nice thankyou!! :)

    How easy!!

  • that nice !!!

  • lmao id rather buy one

  • Wow! Awesome! Cool!

  • watch out with heating the thing ....

  • Wax lava lamps are wrong. Real ones use liquids of different densities, which don't mix.

I have a disk with instructions on how to make proper lava lamps. They are safe to build.

I never did like the wax lava lamps. The was cools to an ugly shape and becomes solid, so shaking the lamp when cool doesn't make the "lava" move. The liquid ones will move about, cooled or warmed.

  • mine blew up in my face.

  • will it work if i put it near my laptop heat exit?

  • most likely not. that will not produce enough heat.

  • Not to mention that if you obstruct the heat exit you might end up with a broken laptop.

  • @arnricepicker lol not my computer melted a whole in my pjs lol haha i need a new computer

  • if ur running an 1990hp it will work hahahahaha. thse things burned people lol

  • WARNING WARNING WARNING Under No Circumstances Should Anyone Add Any "Perchlorate" salts to this mixture. THERE IS NO PERCHLORATE. Doing so would result in possibly a fire or explosion. The authors erroneously state that perchloroethylene is perchlorate. IT IS NOT. BRAKLEEN IS NOT PERCHLORATE.

  • Yes, I agree. Do not use perchlorate salts, as it is used as an oxidizer in rocket fuel. We did not use the salts.

We instead used the Brakleen. In hindsight, it is actually non-chlorinated. For whatever reason, it still worked.

Also, Brakleen is flammable, when exposed to an open flame or high temperatures. That was not a danger to us because we did not have any open flames. Even though we mixed it with wax, the combined mixture was heated in ethylene glycol and salt water.

  • @momomomo38 glad theres atleast ones mart person on youtube

  • @momomomo38 The brakleen is probably perchlloroethylene

  • @momomomo38 The brakleen is probably perchloroethylene, a dense, non-flammable solvent.

  • @momomomo38 yes, i agree with your statement. you should not use real perchlorate as it is highly toxic. for whatever reason however, the brakleen did work. looking back at it i am not sure why.

  • Great project! I hope your team got a good grade on it. Well presented, too.

  • wow! i like it!

  • but u cant spell peace? lol

  • You spelt it wrong too, crashtexas meant piece not peace. Either way he's a jackass.

  • u cant spell piece either dumb shit

  • its just a wrong spelling piece of cake

  • alguien me lo traduce al espaniol??

  • heeyyy where can I buy the ethylene glycol ?

  • @eU182 auto parts store its the same as green anti freze you put in your car they also sell the pure kind and the 50/50 mix ........ i do not know wich kind to use only were to get it ........

  • say what???

  • ethylene glycol is anti freeze

  • this is more compicated than Denisse Richards

  • neeeerd lol

  • how do you make it go slower?

  • that preety coool

  • most of us do not have a chem lab that would cost around a couple thousand dollars though.. shit.

  • cool, are'nt you guys a bit to little to be doing chemistry???because i saw......you know what nevermind....BTW,love it

  • it'd be a lot easier [and cheaper] to BUY lava lamp, lmfao

  • If you make more you will save a considerable amount of money. You will be able to create your own mixes of color, adjust the flow, and choose the shape. Plus its fun to make!

  • kewl. hahahahahahah ama buy one ^.^

  • how long dose it take to make

  • about a couple of hours. if you have all the material before hand. mind you, we did this in a highschool chem lab

  • Comment removed

  • nice

  • thats pretty cool

  • your chem lab looks like my high school chem lab

  • its because you dont how to do it fag

  • yeh the lamp part was cool :D but i got confused at the explanation part lol :]

anyways great job how old are you your very smart :O

  • How do you get the blue? I know how to do yellow and I tried both red orange and green highlighter fluid in the bottles and it doesn't work this well

  • what blue? you mean blue wax?

you can buy candles that are already blue

  • i accidentally commented on the wrong video, i thought i was still looking at a black light video and how to make bottles glow

  • Cool!

  • how do you send friends invits

  • You used garage band to make the song didn't you?

  • It's easier and cheaper to buy one already made.

  • Awesome XD

  • Wow! I'm glad somebody found a use for my formula and posted a video.

Fortunately, I never had a beaker of wax break or catch fire! Always be very careful.

    Thanks again for the video.

  • i d rather just buy a lava lamp

  • Very cool!

  • wow,,,hard to find materials :P
