Well, French-speakers can understand him. But your point is well taken. This is, by the way, an Italian--I think--version of a French song.

Anyway, roughly (I'm no pro):

A little clarification: a song by Boris Vian, created (I think [he's right]) during the war between France and Algeria, which was banned for a long time. Boris Vian sang it himself, because no other contemporary singer would sing it (afterwards, when there was no longer any risk, they weren't embarrassed).

Oops, I spoke too fast. It wasn't written in opposition to the war in Algeria, but to the French involvement in Vietnam. Written three months before Dien Bien Phu. But banned during the Algerian war for anti-patriotism. You can find the original recording on Dailymotion.

Une petite précision : une chanson de Boris Vian, créée je crois pendant la guerre entre la France et l'Algérie, et qui fut longtemps interdite. Boris Vian l'a chanta lui même, car aucun chanteur de cette époque n'acceptait de la chanter (après, quand il n'y avait plus aucun risque, ils ne se sont pas gênés).
