It is very difficult and unfair to compare baritones of different periods , is the same with Caruso and Pavarotti. There are many differences related to the style, but the more recent singers have greater resources and access to improve their vocal techniques than 80 to120 years ago.

You might have had a point, lhfnet, except that the great tenors & baritones of 80-100 years ago had better voices & greater control over dynamics & agility than anyone today. Pavarotti, for example, had a fraction of Caruso's power, & none of his astonishing ability to colour, nor his agility in fioritura. Amato, & especially Ruffo would dwarf any baritone today. In theory, todays singers have indeed more resources to call upon, in practice however, they are inferior.

There was a Greek barytone named Aggelopoulos about 1930's when we had monarchy in Greece. He had a huge career and was well-known. He is said to have been a communist and while he sang this aria he looked the king and his "cortigiani" right into their eyes. "Αυλικοί ράτσα καταραμένη" he said(the opera the was translated in greek) and people were crying out of thrill and hate against the king...

When listening to any opera, I have a tendency to always prefer whatever singer I hear sing it first. I have listened to other Rigoletto recordings with other Rigolettos and, having heard them first, tend to like them the most. However, hearing Gobbi ONCE immediately changed my mind. I have never heard a better Rigoletto than him.

Vocalmente parlando l'unico vero difetto di T. Gobbi ( ma NESSUNO è privo di difetti ) era quello di non immascherare alla perfezione tutti gli acuti ( come sostiene del resto anche Enrico Stinchelli nel suo libro " Le stelle della lirica " ) ma per il resto rimane un cantante lirico di primissimo livello ( a mio giudizio il miglior cantante lirico uomo di tutti i tempi ). Concludo dicendo che definire L. Nucci ( che pure stimo ) migliore di T. Gobbi mi sembra una pura e autentica eresia.
