  • nah, it wasn't so bad: the worst is the waiting: you know more than 1 day in advance that you're going to hit a storm and have no way of going around it.

We were in it before we even realized it: the sky was still clear.

We just handed the boat over to the windpilot, got everybody inside and 'battened the hatches'. The watchman had to stick his (or her) head out every 30 minutes.

  • thinking about solo sailing crossing the atlantic soon, but I will piss myself if I have to go thru a storm front, my plan is just to sail downwind hah

  • Good seamanship. Wild ride!

  • wat is the chance of getting a storm when youre crossing the atlantic??

  • @andybon17: depends on the season and the location where you cross ... in my case it wasn't very big, but still :)

You can find the 'ideal' time and track in e.g. 'ocean passages for the world'

  • @plastiekske Its a big challenge to go across the Atlantic, but the feeling of achieving this must be indescribable! :)

  • How big was the boat? I've sailed through a storm before - one of the scariest moments of my life actually. It doesn't have to be like perfect storm to scare one. I have to say the constant pounding of 10 foot breakers can wear down a mans strength.

  • it's a 35ft all steel cutter rigged. Built for this kind of stuff :)

  • @plastiekske is it a van de stadt?

  • @pwny100 it's south-african design: Brian Alcock designed and built one for himself to sail around the world. While he was in a shipyard in the USA, the owner of the yard liked the design so much that he had one built for himself ... that's this one. Nowadays the plans can be bought from Dudley Dix and a set of pre-cut steel plates is also available.

You can see more pictures of the boat at users.telenet.be/sailingfrank/Smoke

  • @pwny100 cool

  • @plastiekske is it a van de stadt??

  • nice stuff. i have found that pictures never tell the story. very difficult to convey the actual size of the seas. always fun to try...

  • great video but i will not call that a "storm" i think its more like 10 m/sek

  • at this point it was just the edge, and wind was at force 6+. After shooting this video, everybody got inside and we 'battened down the hatches' (with the person 'on guard' sticking his/her head out every 30 minutes). We sailed right through it, and got to about force 8 (although it would make a force 10 at the bar :D )

  • amazing

  • great video! Live free on the sea!

  • Nice footage. Wish I was aboard...

  • Alone like that, it can seem the loneliest place on earth.

  • grande la capottina ti sala la vita!!!!

  • veramente si chiama sprayhood

  • si bravo, e so anche che l'albero si chiama "albero" e io lo chiamo comunque palo...

le lezioni di lessico nautico me le hanno già fatte da bambino

  • You've got some great video clips of your sailing trip.

  • Nice video-what kind of boat?
