  • My heart aches for Blanche. Previn's music and Fleming's singing reduce me to tears. .. I wish Tennessee Williams had lived to hear this.

  • Can someone tell me what this song is about please!? :)

I <3 Renee she is just fantastic. We are from the same town too! I actually see her mother every week! most amazing family of singers!

  • One of the finest things she's ever done. She captures Blanche's spirit through Previn's heartbreakingly beautiful music. It moves me every time I hear it.

  • NO ONE.No one else will be able to sing/act/fulfill this role quite like she did. No, wonder she took a break after singing this role.

  • I saw her perform this beautiful aria at Carnegie Hall last year spring with Andre Previn conducting. It was such a pleasure to hear her sing something written for her. Previn clearly understands the strengths of Ms. Fleming's vocal gifts. Long, lyrical lines blossoming at her top. Even out of context of the opera, she brought this scene to life. I only wish it had been longer.

  • from what year is this?? Renee is such a star!

  • @wannamlwithu 1998 I believe this role was written for her =)

  • This production is beautiful, powerful, heartbreaking. The DVD doesn't have a libretto or captions though, so you might also want to buy the CD which includes the brilliant libretto. If they're out of print go to ebay or amazonmarketplace. I hope someone will restore this "Streetcar" soon with captions. Previn adapted the text brilliantly!

  • Can anyone tell me at what point in the opera she sings this aria?

  • This is very near the end of Act III just before the doctor and nurse enter and restrain her.

  • Thanks! I've got to buy the DVD. I'm in love.

  • Previn truly wrote for her voice. Especially the last phrase. It is beyond difficult to do that well. she is amazing.

  • Oh my goodness she is so captivating in this performance. I'm a big Williams fan and I never thought of opera in Streetcar but it really works.

  • Maravilhosa!

  • I was at the world premiere performance of "streetcar" in San Francisco, and you could feel the incredible majestic power of her voice. The whole audience was transported during this piece... Utterly amazing moment!

  • You're absolutely right. I have the DVD . Excellent. Renee is unique!!!

  • Qué bello Renee!! hacía como una año que no te escuchaba. Un tranvía llamado Deseo: qué gran pieza. Y previn excelente en su versión de ópera. Brava Renee!!!!

  • I just wish it was available in better quality or (just in dreams) I was able to listen to this piece live.

But thanks for uploading, even youtube quality is good when you can't buy DVD :)

P.S. I absolutely adore Renee - when it comes to opera she's my favourite.

  • For me, the musical highlight of Previn's opera; it is memorably presented here by the divine Renee Fleming, who has one of the most beautiful voices of all time. I can remember the sound of her voice long after I've heard it.

  • Is this towards the end when Blanche goes insane?

  • Yes, she sings this aria just before she is taken to the mental institution.

  • Anyone know where I can find the lyrics to this song?

  • Thank you so much for posting this! If you have any more clips, I'd love to see them added :)

I just read the play and now after watching Renee in this role, I am convinced there is not a better interpretation of Blanche DuBois! This scene makes me cry every time! Brava, Renee! <3

  • I don't understand why in the Kasan's film of "A Street Car Named Desire", this entire parliament was eliminated. I wonder if Jessica Lange says it i her re-make, 'cause I can not find the film. We have it in the Opera!!! Why not in the Kasan's movie?

  • i wouldn't even know how to begin to describe why i love her, but the ease and honesty with which she sings this aria really do bring me to tears. she is such a beautiful singer and i couldn't imagine anyone else premiering this role.

  • I've just realised Renee looks like Reece Witherspoon. Only my God does she sing better!

  • Renee: You make me cry in this part of the Previn's Opera. I Love You!!Incredible Diva!!

I will never stop hearing you if I could.

    God Bless you Renee!!!

  • My god! Is there any boundary to this beautiful voice?

The most beautiful voice of ALL TIMES!

  • Oh God, I'm alright until right at the end, when she sings "as blue as my first love's eyes", and then I can't help but burst into tears. It's so beautiful and heartbreaking.

  • I love hair flat like this... Well, except from the beauteful vice of course. I saw her in a concert in Oslo last year. Incredible voice, much better live, clearer. And she is sooo tiny. :-)

  • You are right! Her voice sounds much better live. I can confirm that!

As for this piece of music, she is absolutely magnificent!!!

  • she looks amazing

  • brava....luv this song....

  • I hated modern opera until I saw her on pbs do it. She is the best at this genre.

  • All I need is the air that she breaths...

  • i want to have her babies

  • Absolutely lovely! Way to go, Renee!

  • beautiful.

  • BRAVA!!!!
