  • Hi,

My dog is really good with the frisbee when u roll it on the gound, and she already knows the trick to go around me. but the one thing is when i do small throws she runs so slow! O_O ! but when its in the air she sort of runs like a bunny...... hopping....... i beileve that she will get it overtime!!! :p a couple of times she almost got it!!!!

I just have to say this but i think that u shouldn't use dog treats in this excersise because they become too focused on the food. just a sugestion!

  • Nice!

  • thats cool.

  • Thank you very much for putting out such a detailed video. Your dog is awesome. We have a rescue border collie mix and she is only 10 months old. She is very timid, so we are trying to gain her interest whille inside (because outside is just too exciting just yet). Is this a good way to start? Thank you again for putting out such a great video!

  • where can i find a good disc for my golden?

  • @horses4eva3300 herodiscusa. c o m Check under "K9 Discs". The Air 235 is my favorite and all of the "Super" Models are very durable.

  • Thank you!:)

  • What brand of frisbees are good? I bought these frisbees from the dollar store and my foster dog broke it on the first bite. All the frisbees i see at the pet stores are around 15 dollars just for one. they have the 1 dollar ones but they seem really cheap. Is there a place i can buy a lot of them for a good price and that are durable. I live in chicago or maybe a website

  • my shih tzu is shy of playing frisbee outside of our home and with other dogs can any of u guys offer some tips?

  • Great video and awesome song

  • hello im 11 and my pitbull doesn't want to let go of the frisbie he will also break it in 1 minute ( he has chewed golf balls in have ) also sometimes he doesn't want to bring it back. he is going to be 2 in augest

  • Not sure if anyone else has commented, but the song "Cliffs of Dover" is by Eric Johnson, not Eric Clapton. Thanks

  • I'm trying to teach my Shepherd mix to catch frisbees! She'll let it drop then run around, or she'll slam them onto the ground with her paws! She also won't bring them back, haha. We're working on it!

  • thanks so much for the vid! i love how you included leftys :3

i am working on teaching my German Shepherd catch and this really helped! so far he is catching it when it is thrown a foot or so away from him!

  • 3 people tried to teach their cat to catch a disc.

  • My dog is too small.

Anyway, is that park at Pomona?

  • First of all great video !

Then my westie , love frisbee and when I hold it no problem.

But when I through it she don't even try to catch it ! She run and just wait him to fall on the ground ...

I've done all your steps so have you got a solution ?

  • Awesome!!! I lab is going to enjoy this! Thank you for sharing ! Bear our Lab thanks you as well. Woof!

  • thanks!!!! my dog learned it!!! even i dont have frisbee disk...so there's a flying plate in our lawn :)

  • Can any breed do this? I have a Samoyed

  • Thanks for posting this. My 4 Month old Labradoodle is now getting the frisbee. She wouldn't even touch it before. She was good at Fetch with a stick before, now she is loving the frisbee even more.

  • Thanks! This really worked well with my 4 month old Labradoodle. She wouldn't even pick up the Frisbee before. She is all about it now.

  • when my GS is out of food or water we tells you my throwing the bowl like a disk

  • I don't know if this was mentioned before. But remember to warm up your dogs before training, especially when it is about jumping, turning around and running fast like in agility or frisbee catching. Your dog should then have a smaller risk to get injured if something goes wrong.

I don't have a frisbee, but next summer I could get one and try my rough collie if she gets interested. She is a bit "slow motion" creature at home, but I've seen some speed on agility field with a ball in my hand.

  • i have a mutt, we think she's a border collie mix, i cant get her to take intrest in the frisbee, she'd rather chase it's shadow. How can i get her to like the frisbee, not the shadow?

  • I really want to try this with my border collie mix. She's got a lot of energy and a good natural prey drive. She would be a great disc dog. Too bad I have to wait until spring. I think we'll make a great team. The only problem is, I like taking her disc golfing with me and I would be afraid she try and go after my discs when I'm playing. Hopefully I can teach her the difference between disc golf and disc catching.

  • Hey you two, thanks so much for the vid! My 5month old GSD x puppy is really getting into the frisbee now. We are on our fourth or so session, he's clicking onto it! The top about feeding your dog out of the frisbee really helped. Jet isn't much of a "fetch" dog, but after the positive link between food and frisbee, he's loving it! Short sessions ending on a positive note and only producing the disc during those sessions is our key. THANK YOU!

From Gwen and Jet in New Zealand!

  • Awesome video and really appreciated it, the song Cliffs of Dover was done by Eric Johnson not Eric Clapton, but again I loved the video.

  • how old does my dog have to be to catch the disk?

I have a Jack Rusell Terrier, 6 months.

I bought a disc yesterday and he loves it.

He lets it land infront of him before picking it up and coming to me.

    Will he slowly gain confidence>

  • @myaluko You can start at just about any age. Keep it from jumping/vaulting until he's about 18 months old. He will gain confidence but doing "takes" and short catches will help him want to grab that disc.

  • @SketchandFlash Hello, will you tell me the breed of the black and white dog that is at the beginning of the video please? I want this breed.

    Thanks

  • @lovemybeau Blitz is a Border Collie.

  • @SketchandFlash Thank you!

  • @SketchandFlash its one of the smartest dog thats why it can be teach easily..I tried to prove the saying old dogs can't be teach new tricks..my dog is 5 years old..and yes I'm having a difficult time teaching him.

  • @lovemybeau i hope you don't just want this breed for its looks, because you might regret it... they're wonderful, but high maintenance dogs that need a LOT of stimulation and exercise!

  • @lovemybeau Border Collies need tons of exercise and are very mart it can be used against you research a breed before you buy and only buy from a responsible breeder or shelter I got my Australian Shepard Border Collie cross from a shelter I also got my Border Collie there purebred just not wanted someone got him and could not tire him out enough he bugged the day lights outta them perfect with me be careful

  • @myaluko same i have a boxer 10 weeks he loves it but waits for it to land then picks it up and let me no if your jack russel has gained confidence and if he has tell me what you did please

  • I have a Border Collie puppy who is VERY interested in her frisbee. She prefers it over any other toy. For a while now I've been trying to figure out how to actually get her to catch it out of the air, instead of just chasing after it when I roll it vertically. But now I know how, and I will try it, so thank you! (:

  • Nice video. Cute border collie.

  • Will be working on the rapid fire/alternating left to right with my 9 month old Border Collie mix next. Thank you for helping stimulate and train a dog who's intelligence and energy keep me challenged.

  • I wasnt rolling it vertically, .. and it totally worked now he is catching it in the air (not far at all) but we are starting!! thanks a lot

  • awesome!!

  • You are a great teacher! Thank you so much! I'm trying to teach my Springer to Catch the Frisbee and following your steps.

  • thanks that helped alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now my dog thats even a year can catch a frisbee

  • Nice music

  • THis is the best video of teaching your dog to catch that i've seen. I used it to teach my dog, and now she is great at playing frisbee! Do you hae any tips on how to teach your dog to do any other sort of catches? thanks!

  • thank you so much! My Border Collie pup is 10 weeks so im not going to rush him into anything. Your video has nice easy steps, I actually like it better than zak's/. I dont know what PittiesLuver problem is, you're teaching is great!

  • the music wasnt neccessary no srsly

  • i will try with my jack russell this trick

  • thanks for helping

  • Absolutely FANTASTIC tutorial! My puppy is only 15 weeks old but he is already a fetching maniac, so I can't wait to build up to the flying catch. This is a terrific help. . . thank you for posting.

  • This is a very helpful video. I have one dog who wasn't at all interested in any kind of fetch until 7 months old. My new puppy seems likewise, but I'm going to use your ideas as a fun way to play with both of them. Right now, When I throw for the older one, the pup runs and plays tug after its already caught. Thanks for the tips and excellent presentation.

  • cool video ... i just found my dog interested in playing frizbee ... ! thanks for the help

  • It has to be a disc or a freesbee? my freesbee has Lines :/ i can use it?

  • wow..I've never had a dog and just assumed that dogs naturally knew how to play catch with a ball or frisbee! Can the small dogs paly frisbee or is it just a game for the medium to bigger sized ones. I was thinking of buying my first dog and it would probably be an eskimo dog or brittany. I'll save this video in case I actually do get around to getting a dog..thanks

  • @mission762008 Nope not natural! Some dogs catch on very quickly though. Any size dog can do this!

  • @SketchandFlash what color disc is best? I know dogs can't see full color like we do, so what color disc will get their attention more?

  • @javixm My dogs all seem to like pink and orange the best but it really depends on the dog.

  • @javixm Just Buy Some Sets Of Disc's And Throw Each Colour And See Witch Disk Ur Dog Runs After

  • @mission762008 Thanks for the reply!!! I went out and got a frisbee to try out on my sister's dog..which is some sort of puggle terrier type dog. Next time we babysit it for the week I'm going to try your lesson out on it!!!

  • @mission762008 I have a brittany and she caught on to catching frisbees right away! Now she loves it! :) you can see it on my channel!

  • I don't think it's really fair that you're using a border collie that clearly already likes frisbees. Borders are already incredibly play driven, so why not use a different breed that's not known to have such a high play drive? Like a terrier or something?

  • @PittiesLuver I am showing you how to train your dog that already has interest in toys to play disc. FYI, Terriers do have a lot of play drive. Plus, there are tons of ways to get dogs interested. They're not like cookie cutters, they all have different needs. This is the dog that I have, so I didn't think i needed to go find another dog to show someone how to get their dog to catch a disc. If you have a dog that does not have much play drive, I can try to give you help with that.

  • Okay, terriers weren't a good example. But what I'm saying is that this border collie obviously already knows how to catch a frisbee because it's already bringing it back to you and everything. Like Zak George, he usually uses Callie, a dog who doesn't know how to do what she's about to be taught and that makes it easier for viewers to follow.

  • I have an australian shepherd, and it refuses to touch the frisbee no matter how hard i try to play with him with it everyday no matter what i do with it he wont ever touch it. What can I do to get him to play with it.

  • My Australian Shepard will not touch the disc. He will play with other things souch as toys and rope but its like he doesn't care at all that it is there.

  • Can smaller dogs do this too? i have a lhasa apso, and i wanted to teach her this game

  • @mrm64 Yes they can! There is even a small dog world championship too! This dog George even beats the big dogs!

    youtube(dot)com/watch?v=cMuccQuteXE

  • P.s. my australian shepherd kinda just waits for it to get low enough for him to just grab with his mouth.... Is it possible to teach him to jump high and catch it in mid-air? Or is that considered a progression from what he's already doing?

  • Over time some dogs will start to jump more. Usually thinner dogs will jump higher(but not too thin!) You can somewhat train a dog to jump for a disc using an agility jump and doing takes over the jump. It's also best for your dog to jump so that the front paws hit the ground a bit before the back paws do. You never want back paws to hit the ground first. You never want the dog to land in a handstand position or straight up.

  • GREAT METHODS-- gonna try this on my australian shepherd!! and @alexspy123, my dog does the same thing!

  • thanks. You helped me soooo much. I kept watching Zak Georges videos, and I love him to death but honestly when it comes to teaching my dog frisbee he didnt help too much. But this video helped me. Thank you! I have a cocker spaniel and when we play, she holds the disc upside down when bringing it back, is this bad? She is not quite on the catching part yet, but we are getting there. But cockers are small, do you think that it may make a difference, then like a border collie?

  • Thank you!! Holding the disc upside down isn't necessarily bad, unless you want the to bring it right side up for a certain reason. Many dogs in the beginning, especially small dogs, like to carry it upside down because it is easier. I've actually done a freestyle trick called the "mouth take" and the dog takes the disc from my mouth. I found that holding it upside down is much easier than the other way. The catching will come with time and patience :) Good luck!

  • my dog plays keep away instead of retrieving the disk

  • Either run from them and try to get them to chase you or put a long lead on them and reel 'em in.

  • Woo hoo same with me!!!

  • 5 STARS, PLUS A NEW SUBSCRIPTION!

    (excuse the caps lock!!)

  • I like your video, and Blitz is very pretty! So, I have a miniature schnauzer, and she only likes soft, chewable, squeaky toys. I really would like her to learn to catch a frisbee though. What should I do, since she doesn't like hard toys? I already own plastic frisbees, so should I just keep encouraging her? By the way, she's trained in obedience, showmanship, and beginner agility, so that makes training easier. Thanks for any help and/or advice.

  • You may want to try a Floppy disc or a Kong Flyer first. (They have small ones too) Anything that is the same shape as a disc should work. Most pet stores have some kind of softer toy in the shape of a disc. Usually once they are driven to catch the floppy then they don't have a huge problem switching to the plastic.

  • My two Border Collies(including the one in the video) started with floppy discs and then moved on to plastic. But beware of the hard discs in pet stores because many of them are actually unsafe for the dog's mouth. It it is not a Wham-O(DT World), Hero, or HyperFlite disc, I cannot guarantee that it is safe for your dog. Happy Training! Hope the advice helps!

  • Hello! Realy nice video. I have one more request if possible - I have serious problems with throwing a floater (floating frisbee). If it fals down it does not have any spin if it has spin it just goes away and it is not falling. I just can not find out how to do it correct. Any sugestions? Thank you!

  • Start off(without the dog, until you've mastered this) by putting you hand on the right side(or left side, if you are left-handed) and pull your hand straight back toward you and release the disc. That is how you put spin on it. Then, for the float part, use the same technique and push upward. It's like throwing a regular long throw but instead of going across, go upward. Hope this helps!

  • Can any dog Catch a Frisbee...

    GREAT VIDEO XD

  • Yes! Any dog can catch a disc!!

  • Awesome vid! Would you recommend any disc brands?

  • Yes! I love Hero discs! Go to herodiscusa. c o m.

Look under the K9 Discs at the Hero Xtra 235. They have three different kinds of Xtras...Original, Distance, and Freestyle. I like the Freestyle series the best but you're safe with any of the Hero discs. If your dog chews them up quickly, I would recommend the SuperSonic or the SuperHero models.

  • ok I will keep trying! I can't wait to try this with a Belgian!

  • yes, I don't think he'll ever catch one.

  • you can't think that way! Just keep trying! It took a year before my dog really wanted to play Frisbee.

  • can yokeshine terriers catch discs? or are they to small mine can drag my football around for a min

  • Yes! They even have mini disc for small dogs! Terriers have a natural instinct for chasing rats so it is definitely possible. I have seen Yorkies that play. Check out herodiscusa. c o m. (no spaces though lol. Youtube wont lemme post links) Look under K9 Discs & look at the Hero Pup discs. Are they tea cup Yorkies? I used to have 2 but they passed on two yrs ago because of age. I wish they would've been younger when I started playing disc because I'm sure they would have played!

  • cool then i am going to start training my yorkie to catch one

  • i bought my dog a small disc today and when i call him to me he dosen't bring the disc with

  • So he is coming back, but with out the disc? Run up after him to the disc and get him to pick it up. (Try pointing at it or even picking it up and try to get him to take it form your hand.) When he picks it up, run from him. He should chase you and come back to you. When he comes back give him a lot of praise, even if he only brings the disc back a little bit. I'd love to see video!

  • and no he doesn't play with other toys unless its the feather duster

  • Have you tried feeding him out of the disc? Some dogs take longer to gain drive, especially mellow dogs.

  • yes I have he is a white Shiba Inu im not planning to enter him in any competitions (but I will when I get my malinois this summer) I just want to get him in shape. Also i know the shiba inu is supposed to be like a hyper breed but the white shiba inu is bigger and more mellow.

  • my dog won't even look at the disc I've tried peanut butter being really enthusiastic but he is not interested any help?

  • Have you tried moving the disc around and trying to get him to chase it? What breed of dog? Does it play with other toys? Most dogs don't like it much at first.

  • This was a super sweet tutorial! :)

  • now he chases it and brings it back, the only prob. is that when i throw it he doesnt catch it, he waits for it to hit the ground. Can you help?

  • Some dogs take longer to learn to catch, especially puppies. Flash took about 4 months of being interested in playing disc before he would actually catch it in the air. Try holding the disc out in front of his nose and when he grabs on to it say "catch." You can do this with a ball too. Throw the disc out just a tiny bit in front of him and say "catch." Make sure to praise your dog whenever he puts his mouth on the disc.

  • Have you tried the rollers that I showed in the video? If so, when he gets to the roller does he grab it or wait until it falls flat on the ground? If he's not grabbing the rollers, keep trying to get him to put his mouth on the disc. Don't get discouraged! I'm sure your dog will start to catch soon. Thank you for subscribing!

  • thank you and btw he is a puppy not even one yet so thnx:D

  • You're welcome! If you have any more questions feel free to ask :)

  • ok my dog likes it but when he chases it he doesnt bring it back. can u help me? btw i subbed u:D

  • Hey can you help? my dog doesnt seem to get intrested in the Frisbee.... I tried using it as a food bowl but still nothing... Please respond.

  • Sit on the ground at their eye level, and then try moving it on the ground quickly and getting them to chase it. You could also start by trying to get him/her to tug on it. Try to make the game as exciting as possible. Give the dog a ton of praise if he/she shows any sign of interest.

  • Some dogs learn in two hours, some learn in two years. Don't get discouraged. It took my dog, Flash, about a year to really want to play with Frisbees. Is your dog interested in other toys? What breed of dog do you have?

  • Thanks! :) your a lot of help:) keep making your videos! OH and also should I like maybe stuff the frisbee in the dogs mouth?

  • Yeah. Some people have said they put peanut butter on the rim. Not sure how it ends up working though. I would imagine they just lick it off and leave the disc, but I've never had a dog get to that point haha :)

  • Thank you very much and Thanks for answering right away! your an awesome dog trainer :)If I have any more questions Ill just ask :)

  • can golden retrievers do that as well??

  • Yes! Any dog can learn to do this!

  • this is a gret vid hope it works!

  • nice video

  • Great video, Kirby! I sent it to my neice & nephew who have a border collie.

  • Great video! nicely explained, I think now I need a few lessons in how to throw the frisbee straight and then I'll be in business!!
