THE DREAMERS ...i didn't know that one...i'll look it up. i like zorn's melodic side and the divercity of his music is interesting too. i'm not sure about the purpose of the ALL-SCREEMING stuff, like LENG TCH'E - over half an hour of horrible shrieking and monotonus instrumental noise. but that's zorn, i guess...
hahaha I love LENG TCH'E and many other Zorn stuff some screaming stuff like... pretty avant-garde'ish i just can't listen or it is kinda hard, but some other stuff like that is amazing, specially Naked City, anyway, still good stuff and a great and prolific composer and musician.
Well Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra comes to mind. It reminds me of Electric Masada sound. Another good act associated to Mazurek is Chicago Underground Duo.
@nogololo i think you missed the point of my comment, i was saying the amount of sound ability from Zorn's sax is on par with a guitar with a large amount of effects
i didnt dig the video with professor graves as much. couldnt hear him at all, couldn't hear his tones and the melody he was playing on the drums, pretty important. it seems like maybe the musicians are taking different approaches in that video
Hey lexo30. Do you think you know more about music than John Zorn? I think Zorn knows what he's doing and no one is forcing him to play with people he doesn't feel are fit to share the stage with him. Zorn saw fit to play with Lou Reed. That's all you need to know.
What the hell are two such great musicians as John Zorn and Marc Ribot doing on the same stage as Lou fucking Reed??? He's not fit to fetch them their morning coffee.
how about this. are you a musican? if so it is great because it puts you a bit closer to working with Zorn or Ribot yourself because they are open enough to work with others
now I did not try to defend lou reed though I think we have a difference of opinion
I am a musician, as it happens, though I would not claim to be a professional one. Even if I were not, I still have the right to think that Lou Reed is not fit to share a stage with Zorn or Ribot. He is a middling-good pop songwriter with pretensions as a guitar player.
it seems you don`t know much about Lou Reeds music/musical abilities. He has done more then just popsongs. Just check out his "Metal Machine Music" (youtube - watch?v=Zr0KkzbbqPI) and see/hear for yourself.
Actually I am well aware of Metal Machine Music, and all I have to say about it is that, in my opinion, setting up a few microphones in a studio, letting them feed back for a couple of hours and then releasing it as an album required very little musical ability. If I want to listen to terrifying feedback I'll listen to Hendrix or Sonny Sharrock, who could at least play the guitar. Even Pat Metheny's solo noise guitar album is better than Lou Reed's fumbling attempts.
yeah, have you listened to the velvet underground lexo30? this music is nothing even close to that band, i know lou reed was in it but that has nothing to do with this stuff
Yes I have listened to the Velvet Underground. I think they're all right, but overrated. I just don't think Lou Reed is a resourceful enough musician to be onstage with Marc Ribot and John Zorn, both of whom are much better instrumentalists than he is.
actually i agree with what you say, sorry i looked at the wrong user name to reply. for personally i think lou reed really is overrated as a guitarist, just look at metal machine music and youll get what i mean.

The improv Zorn did at The Stone with Lou & Laurie Anderson on electric violin is nice, too. Available at Zorn's website. Pretty awesome!

try THE GIFT, IAO, TABBOO AND EXILE as well as his FILM WORKS(there are several}
IT'S not all melodic of course since his work is so diverse, but there are many interesting tunes in there.
theo9952 2 years ago
The Gift is so good. kinda latin-ish, isn't it?

@boogster123321
they're also playing the parts of the harmonium, bass, and percussion.
why add 3 extra names to the bill when you could tour europe as a super power trifecta jazazz monster?

Listen, John Zorn can share a stage with whoever he wants to, but it doesn't mean that I have to think that it's a good idea.
