Some people thought Kentaro should've won, but he survived by mere luck it seems. The fact that a graphic designer seemed to fall behind Kenichi on presentation was embarrassing enough.
Maybe it was because of his lack of experience, but during the cooking phase looked like setting the cat amongst the pigeons, and the cat was a fire-breathing jaguar. Kenichi made the battle look totally one-sided in his experience and improvisation alone.
@ikachanusa Are you kidding me? the man's a cook, do you rally think he wants to work when he gets home? If you marry a cook, you better get used to a lot of sandwich making. Probably more than you're used to, even.
they talked about the first lady chef (before kentaro's mom) in the kitchen who beats iron chef chen. does anyone know what battle it was? i tried to look for it here but couldn't find it..thanks in advance! =]
It was the first Battle Scallop, which was never broadcast outside Japan - it was one of the earliest episodes of this show's history. (The same chef does appear here in Battle Veal.)
yea i agree the beef and potatoes is so delicious.. my mom hardly makes it because you have to slowly cook the beef ribs days ahead. the korean version is delicious
I think the challenger lost because of the curry dish and the ice cream dish, it doesn't bring out the key ingredient, but the creativity for the dish is good.
@Pinklex03 I agree, and I think one of the judges put it best: he's got remarkable skills to be sure, but he hasn't found that thing to make his dishes truly one-of-a-kind, which frankly is totally understandable at 25. I mean, did you SEE Chen's dessert? That's something only experience and a bold creativity can come up with.
I tell you what, though - I definitely wanna buy Kentaro's cookbooks now. :)
have you ever considered that the Iron chefs are overall better than all other challengers.
She's often the only judge that says something more than 'ahh, i like this, i really do, very profound, at first i didn't, but now i do. it makes me so happy!'
at least she makes real suggestions, but that's too much for some people....
Also, one of the Iron Chef's biggest advantages is they regularly cook for the judges and listen to their comments; allowing them to tailor dishes for the tastes of the regulars. This plus their familiarity with the stadium kitchen and the 1 hour format gives them big advantage
Ishida about chen desert:"It's perfect" I have to agree with him. He didn't vote for chen though. Actor are into youth and fashion I guess. LOL So in his mind, the challenger's youth and fashion philosophy alone defeated chen
this is one of my favorite battles, the atmosphere was so calm, cool and friendly, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the food looked absolutely delicious.
I was surprised the challenger even managed to get one judge on his side in this battle. I don't think he really believed he could win, but he looked like he was having fun. It was a good match.
I thought this battle was going to be pretty lame. It turned out to be very interesting, and a couple of the judges actually had worthwhile comments.
'If you ask me how it is, I'll just start singing!'. lol, I love that singer. This judging is so relax probably because they know each other so well. This is a less tense more fun battle ^^
that young kid was too in love with himself as his dishes were pretty plain. the little jackass shot the panel a dirty look when the verdict was read.
He was definitely concerned with looking cool, but I didn't get the impression from his expression that he was upset at the verdict. In any event, he wasn't as skilled as some chefs they've had. There was no way he could win, and I think he knew that.
The challenger was only 25, and he was more a food critic and author than an actual chef. I don't think he believed he could actually win against Chen.

I think he lost because he used pre-made ingredients for important elements of his dishes combined with a very basic and heavy handed technique

Kishi ALWAYS gives the Iron Chefs two points over the challengers. She's an awful, awful judge
ihatetherockAOR 3 years ago
Erm, that is the minimum she can do... if she give any more to the challenger or less to chen, it would be a draw of 17-17....
