Firstly, whether cows enjoy being milked or not is beside the point. In nature, the calf consumes all of the mother's milk, however when it comes to farming, the calf is shipped off to make veal instead so humans can rob her milk. Dairy farming is animal exploitation, and a ghastly one at that, and exploitation of any sentient creature is wrong. If none us drank milk or consumed their flesh, cows wouldn't be bred in the first place.
As for 'we need to eat meat', that isn't correct. There's nothing in meat or animal products that we can't acquire elsewhere, and sure, veganism is now widely considered healthier than a diet including animal products. As for overpopulation, animals are bred by humans due to the demand for their products, if we all became vegan, the demand would vanish, and the animals would not be bred. In other words, there would be billions less animals than the present.

If the U.S. has so much fertile ground that isn't being farmed, why isn't it being farmed? We are importing food from other countries. Why wouldn't we just go farm that land. I'll tell you why. Winter hits before they finish growing. The midwest has this same problem.

Firstly, whether cows enjoy being milked or not is beside the point. In nature, the calf consumes all of the mother's milk, however when it comes to farming, the calf is shipped off to make veal instead so humans can rob her milk. Dairy farming is animal exploitation, and a ghastly one at that, and exploitation of any sentient creature is wrong. If none us drank milk or consumed their flesh, cows wouldn't be bred in the first place.

As for 'we need to eat meat', that isn't correct. There's nothing in meat or animal products that we can't acquire elsewhere, and sure, veganism is now widely considered healthier than a diet including animal products. As for overpopulation, animals are bred by humans due to the demand for their products, if we all became vegan, the demand would vanish, and the animals would not be bred. In other words, there would be billions less animals than the present.

You know, the core of this argument isn't whether the Vegan lifestyle is Moar sustainable for everyone; it's the morality of eating delicious beasts. I just want to know exactly when goldog30 decided it was a criminal act and not a normal human food source. Is it PETA videos like When Pigs Cry that produces more Vegans, or do they reach their own conclusions?

I still think one of the biggest problems we would be faced with is no football. What would I(and millions of others) do on sunday afternoon if there wasn't football. Speaking of football I hope you never watch it. How could you possibly watch people throwing "the pigskin" around.

When the Alaskan gold rush hit they used horses to transport there mining supplies. There was nothing in alaska for the horses to eat and thousands eventually starved to death. In one area they estimated over three thousand dead horses and they said you could smell them hundreds of miles away. Now imagine if only one percent of those pigs died that would be 150,000 dead pigs. Now can you see the problem in turning them all loose.

There are 15 million pigs in Iowa there are more pigs than people. That would be a great place to live when they turn them all loose. I can't even imagine 15 million dead pigs.

We can grow plenty of crops just nothing high in protein. If you would like to try surviving by eating corn, wheat, barley, and hay then go ahead. Just don't lie to other people so they do the same. Give them some honnest facts and let them decide.

I make my living by farming land. Here in the west we simply cannot grow soybeans. The climates in most areas restrict farmers from growing peanuts and other high protein foods. Water is still the biggest issue, if you have no water you have no plant. I know you can sit at a computer and solve the worlds problems but in real life you are failure. Take my advice and study these problems before you preach to everyone. You are so ignorant you don't want to learn you want to argue.

Am I supposed to believe you or the USDA, The New York Times, Scientific American and a plethora of other sources? The latter indicate that land used to feed livestock can be used to feed humans directly instead.

You can't grow oranges either, but residents of the state are not suffering from scurvy. (Statement used to emphasize the significance of trade) Are you saying that it is impossible to grow food on the land that humans could consume directly? Can you only grow plants that pigs can digest? What state and county is this? Face it, livestock is raised only to satisfy a gluttonous palate; it is not done to maximize aggregate nutrients available for people.

Animals have survived when humans were cave men. There are vast open spaces in where the animals could be spread out an live peaceful lives.

Although most animals convert plant protein into animal protein more efficiently than cattle--a pig, for instance, need be fed "only" eight pounds of protein to produce on pound for humans--this advantage is almost eliminated when we consider how much protein we can produce per acre, because cattle can make use of sources of protein that are indigestible for pigs.

We can use an acre of fertile farmland to grow a high-protein plant food, like peas or beans. If we do this, we will get between 300 and 500 pounds of protein from our acre. Alternatively we can use our acre to grow a crop that we feed to animals, and then kill and eat the animals. Then we will end up with between 40 and 55 pounds of protein from our acre.

We fatten our cattle on a low protein high carb diet. People are the same way. Eat to many carbs and you get fat. If you eat three bowls of cereal you are over eating and you get hungry an hour later. You eat a little meat and you are full for hours. You can eat less food by eating a little meat with it. You stay full longer and gain less weight. If more over weight people ate a balanced diet with some meat and less carbs they would loose weight.

If the U.S. has so much fertile ground that isn't being farmed, why isn't it being farmed? We are importing food from other countries. Why wouldn't we just go farm that land. I'll tell you why. It doesn't exist. I live in the west and our soil type isn't compatible for soy beans. They don't grow. Most other high protein crops don't work because our growing season is to short. Winter hits before they finish growing. The midwest has this same problem.

The average American now consumes nearly a ton of grain a year--93% of it having been first converted into meat, milk, and eggs. The average Indian consumes about 400 lbs. of grain annually, 85% directly in the plant form. Between 1950 and 1972 American per capita meat consumption nearly doubled; yet in 1950 most Americans were already eating as much meat as their bodies could use.

If Americans were to reduce their level of meat consumption to the 1950 level, there would be, for every American who did so, enough grain saved to keep alive at least one, and probably two, people who would otherwise starve.

Why are the Pennsylvania Dutch selling some of the most fertile land in the country to building developers? Would this occur if there is scarcity of fertile farmland in the US.
Processed soybeans are the largest source of protein feed and vegetable oil in the world. The United States is the world's leading soybean producer and exporter.

I live in an area that is being developed. The reason farmers are selling there land is because they are becoming instant multi millionares. I now a farmer who just sold for $320,000 an acre. If you were to buy a farm and payed more than $5000 an acre you would go broke. You could never pay off the loan. If you can make a few hundred bucks a year farming it or sell it for millions what would you do.

barebackjeff, I don't know if you've been in urban areas recently, but every fifth person weighs about twice as much as they should and every third person weighs more than what is healthy. Could the U.S. livestock industry have anything to do with this epidemic? You express concern about lack of protein in vegans, yet the ubiquitous fat-asses are of no concern to you. I'm guessing the obese persons probably consume over 75 grams of protein/day which is unhealthy.

barebackjeff, I have never heard the argument that raising livestock in the U.S. is a more efficient way of nourishing the population than allocating limited land and resources toward crop production. There is overwhelming evidence contrary to what you say. I know that you want to take pride in your job, but you don't have to make up facts.

There are plant based foods are over 50% protein. (eg. tofu) Most Americans eat too much protein anyway. A daily intake of over 75 grams for an adult male could strain the kidneys and liver. The undigested protein turns into nitrogenous wastes.
