There are a few Ramen Shops and Izakaya downtown LA around Little Tokyo.
I have been assured by the Japanese Owners and Managers there that they are as close to real Japanese Cuisine as you can get in the USA ... But you should probably check those packaged microwave ramens off you list
4:18 shows nabeyaki udon. not what it says on the menu, but that's what it's generally known as in North America. roughly translated as "udon casserole", or udon cooked in pot(implying served in pot as well). nabe = pot(casserole), yaki = cooked(grilled, roasted, all the same word) . on the menu it shows 味噌煮込みうどん (or みそ煮込定食) , which is probably the Aichi pref. version of nabeyaki udon with what looks like: negi onion, shiitake, raw egg, aburaage and udon noodles~ good stuff!
So the Noodles, are they similar to the Ramen noodles here in the United States? I appologize if that is a stupid question, I never had japanese cusine to my knowledge.
@agumon12 do you mean actual bowls of ramen from restaurants in the US or instant "ramen" from the US? like that Sapporo Ichiban stuff? as far as i can see from the video, what's show are udon and soba noodles, which are different than ramen noodles. in most japanese restaurants in the states, if they serve hot foods along with sushi, they probably also have things like zarusoba (cold soba noodles with soy sauce dip) and nabeyaki udon (udon noodles in a pot with tempura shrimp, fishcakes...)
I've never had the actual bowls of rammen from a restarunt, I personally don't know if there is a restaraunt where I live that serves that. So yes, I am talking about the instant ramen noodles. haha.
I should go down to the cities and visit my brother sometime and ask him to take me to a Japanese restaraunt. I shall try the zarusoba if they have them.
@agumon12 ramen, soba, and udon are all really good noodle dishes from japan. each very different in texture and served with different types of condiments. and some of the soba/udon have interesting names. my favourite is kitsune(fox) udon, which is just served with a soggy piece of aburaage(deep fried tofu). there's tanuki udon, usually with fried bits of tempura batter and narutomaki fishcakes(the star shaped ones with the pink spiral), and i'm sure many people have heard of bukkake udon.
@agumon12 The only Ramen noodles I have seen here in the states are the ones you add water and microwave, or boil. I think the end result is probably similar, however they probably don't have flavor packets, but actual vegetables/meat O.o;
@agumon12 Soba noodles have better resistance to the teeth than ramen noodles. In addition, soba noodles are made of buckwheat flour and wheat flour ,and are better for health than ramen noodles made only of wheat flour. However, ramen is more delicious than simple soba.becouse ramen comprises delicious soup and many ingredients . But the history of the soba is very long, and taste is not changed too. Please try to eat!
@agumon12 I know soba is different than ramen... For one thing, soba is Japanese and ramen is Chinese, and I know soba noodles are made from buckwheat flour... I don't know what ramen is made from though.
traditional way to eat any noodles in japan and mostly china. noodles often represent longevity, to bite off noodles is symbolic of cutting short your life. most of china aren't as freaked out by people who do except on birthdays and other personal celebrations, but in most parts of japan they look with disdain when you obviously bite off your noodles.
i have a question is the little spoon in the green tea pot there to add the leaves from the green tea? or for sugar or something and do japanese people drink there green tea with sugar or anything in it?
@Mahaweilo Can I answer your question instead of TJCD? Green tea 'powder' is in that pot and you can scoop it up as much as you want, then dissolve it in hot water. Generally don't add anything in green tea,so it tastes plain and very bitter. But flavor is good.
I had Pho a while back and I received complementary green tea as well...if my memory serves me correctly, I enjoyed some while eating in other Asian establishments too! So...
Have you made a video about tea making yet? I'd really like to know, how Japanese people prepare their tea - maybe the traditional way and a comment on what they use on a every day basis. Loose tea? Powder? Tea bags? What type is the most common? What do people there put into their tea (most commonly): sugar? Honey? Lemon? Milk? Cream?
This is a topic I'd really like to hear more about! =)
Thanks for uploading interesting stuff like this! The guy in the video seemed really nice! Greetings! ^_^
@Jemima1377 For green tea nothing is put in it while black tea can vary to taste. What I saw when there was really no set way (Although there are traditional ways to make it it really depends on a persons taste) to make tea and the type of tea varied on peoples taste.
Would be fun to have Geo-locations with your video's. Maybe put them on google maps/google earth or similar software. But that's probably too much of an effort. Especially if all the existing video's would be taken into account. But on the plus side, viewers could check out specific parts of japan they might be interested in, or learn, after watching a video, "where" they've watched it.
@SilentDeath901 Those are Ikura (salmon eggs) I think. Quite expensive. They have a unique salty taste to it that reminds you of the sea (sorry, I don't know how to describe). I hated them when I first tried, but now I think they're really nice.
As a print media graphic designer, I'm really fascinated by the design of their menu. It's great how the Japanese language offers the flexibility to write both vertically and horizontally, greatly benefiting the designer. In America, designers would be lauded for writing text vertically! This Japanese text flexibility allows greater freedom for imagery, which is something a lot of American menus (esp. high-class) frown upon.
When I was in Okinawa there was nothing I loved more than Yakisoba, that stuff was delicious. With Japanese food in general I didn't have much of a taste for it cold, but hot food generally was better. Anything with noodles I love though!

Seems like in everything Japanese there's a little leeway for fun. With Soba, you get to slurp them loudly. Although, I hear everyone else at the table is supposed to go "om nom nom nom" as you do it, but that could be just a rumor.
Great video,. I was wondering if the larger cities have an English menu? The pictures and plastics are good but you can't really tell what's underneath or the type of meat.
@TheJapanChannelDcom Hey when you say "we", who exactly are you referring to? You seem to be the only one that we hear from in the videos, not including the interviews.
@TheJapanChannelDcom do you have anything on business etuquette, especially as a woman? I heard women get treated differently regarding business... it would help alot...
@smallfish42 haha, don't count on it, I was on Tokyo and you'll already be lucky if you get a menu that's Japanese written in Roman characters(Western).
But if you're wondering what's beneath the dishes, it's rice most of the times.
I kinda noticed that the meat for toppings and ramen is often pork, they don't use beef as much as toppings.
Most of the times you can tell what kind of meat it is.
The places that might have English menu's are chains like Coco's curry house etc...
@TheJapanChannelDcom Tempura shrimp... Always good stuff. The same for tonkatsu.=) Green tea is always good stuff. I also like Japanese chicken dishes. And yea. I used to think the sucking thing with noodles in Japan was weird, but I guess it shows the chef that the chef did a great job and that when you eat it making the loud slurping, it shows that it's really good.

Even if I dont have time to watch whole video ,I give a thumb up ! You Should do the same thing so: "LETS PUNCH LIKE BUTTON !" Its always nice to hear: "More videos coming soon." Btw who is that guy .....English teacher ?
Somewhere in Japan there is a company that makes plastic fake food to show the public what the menu items look like..that would be a cool job to have!
how cool, love the videos man, will help me alot when i move to japan in the somewhat near future. I am wondering if you can make a video of Ichiran, its a noodle shop in tokyo that i am hearing a lot about but havent really seen videos of it. Thanks!
Does any body know what type of sauce that is for the Soba noodles
