  • This symphony has been thus far the most exciting symphony to perform. not to dismiss the other composers. There is something very charming and exciting about Sibelius' first symphony. Maybe because in many ways he tries to emmulate his idol, Tchaikovsky. So many elements of Tchaikovsky in his first. Of course, if Sibelius were alive he'd try to deny these statements. Indeed a magical work, and the second movement is tension and a sigh of relief in one movement.

  • I'm not sure which orchestra I prefer, the Berliner Philharmoniker or the Vienna Philharmonic...both are so good!

  • I like Rattle's sound.

  • Kudos to timpanist Wieland Welzel. His performances with the Berlin Philharmonic are setting a new international standard for timpanists throughout the world!

  • I'd like to simply buy the album to listen to in electronic form. Is it available on i tunes? I couldn't get it on Amazon. I'm not interested in a one off show online. Such a beautiful piece, so well done. Excellent.

  • @petegoestubular Not right now. It should be though. I agree.

  • every time i click on the "watch the complete performance now" link, and it tries to get me to pay, i die a little more inside

  • @sdeshpande102 I'm so sorry – but we need to refinance somehow the investment for these productions. Best regards / Tobias

  • @BerlinPhil You could start selling these videos on mail-order dvds where you can pick your own pieces and programme. Wouldn't that be a great idea?

  • @sdeshpande102 I hear you. I pay for it, but I know in this economy it's tough. Many of these would make good DVD's as well. It's a shame the orchestra can't or won't issue some of the DCH broadcasts on DVD or audio. Many good performances stuck in limbo so to speak.

  • are trumpeters of the BPO forced to play rotarys? cause i know that guillaume jehl actually prefers perinets but here he plays a rotary (just as everybody else)... i also prefer rotarys!

  • @mortalfrog0815 sure - it's part of the orchestra's tradition, they never deviated from it (not even in the 70s when almost all other major German orchestras played piston valve trumpets). And you really can't mix rotaries and piston ones in a section, there's no blend at all.

  • AMAZING precision!!! It doesn't get any better than this, folks...

  • Sibelius is the best ever.

    In your face, Adorno!

  • @MarcheseCadmio88 Indeed. René Leibowitz :"Sibelius, le plus mauvais compositeur du monde" I am eagerly waiting for the day that B Ph Orch to performs a cycle of Leibowitz's compositions...

  • truly the best orchestra in Earth... BRAVO!

  • I have a question, Berlin Phil: Will EMI herein use your recording techniques or their own in the Philharmonie?

  • @SpottyDorsord

I hope it's going to be Deutsche Grammophon, it's so much better then EMI ;)

  • Beautiful playing - as always. I can see Maja is playing this concert. Good.

  • @violinhunter2 who is Maja?

  • @her0esfan Maja Abramovic usually sits eighth chair - first violin section. She is my favorite player in the BP - always has been - wears glasses now.

  • Ohh, I love this piece.... my favorite of Sibelius with no doubt.

    lg

  • The Berlin Phil is a particularly good Sibelius orchestra because of the charisma of their sound. The "busy" strings sound so rich, whereas other orchestras sound a bit artificial and harsh, especially in current recordings. You can really hear the Tchaikovsky here too. Reminds me of HvK. I hope the other symphonies are performed with "cold emotion" in the manner of Herb's recordings. Bless him.

I'd certainly buy a CD cycle is it were released based on this snippet.

  • @SpottyDorsord Yes...they did Sibelius all the time with Karajan, recorded some with Levine. I saw Rattle conduct Sibelius 2 different times with the orchestra...they do Sibelius often and not just with Rattle.

  • @SpottyDorsord I would love to see a CD cycle issued...as the orchestra is doing all 7 in one season..I hope EMI is recording the. The orchestra often comments on posts...I hope they comment on this on.

  • Simon Rattle is an Incredible conductor.

  • wow. very amazing!

  • Bellisimo.

  • Rattle is an okay conductor, but Sibelius' 1st symphony is Zzzz...

    nothing beats Osmo Vänskä's interpretation

  • @cosmicism That is, of course, your opinion. I happen to find the Sibelius 1st very beautiful and very moving. To each his own....

  • sounds amazing! uggh. this is one of my favorite symphonies. that 1st clarinetist is BEAUTIFUL! haha just thought I might like to add.

  • @meagamon490

Yes the sound is amazing.... and yes he is beautiful!!!!!! ... HAHAHA!!! The Berlin Phil has a lot of attractive people in it.

  • Brilliant strings.

  • Truly AMAZING!
