@ssgtakeo I think I recall hearing that, but as you know, it's not the plane filmed in this vid. And the airshow example has the short legs and round, leading edge wheel wells of a Harvard/AT-6, so I thought it slightly amusing that both examples, well, weren't! 8-)
There are a number of one-of-a-kind planes at the Smith' and I wouldn't mind a visit there at all, plane buff that I am...
@ssgtakeo You probably know this, but they made a whole bunch of these conversions for the movie "Tora! Tora! Tora!" They looked rather odd on the (supposed) carrier deck, sitting so low compared to the actual Zero on its tall landing gear. The overall effect was pretty good, though, as were the Vultee conversions.
About 15 years ago, I have started to build exactly the same bird. When I lost temporarly interest in it, I have stored it in the attic. Recently, I've decided to continue the building...
Mice have discovered it and found it quid tasty, even glued, painted surfaces had suffered. So my plane is dead before even the maiden flight.
I 'm happy to see yours has not the same treatment as mine :-)
It is hanging at the wall in the basement. As longs as my children will not use it as their soccer-ball target, it will survive. I fly it very carefully. Although I had a very bad crash. But it is repaired and flies very well again.
thanks for answering ive done some guillow rc conversions but none of them looked this good, right now im working on a dare hobbies fokker dr1 lokks good so far
this is a great plane and i'm also building a guillows kit. i have a rough idea on what i want but what motors, servos, batteries etc would you recommend for a rc guillows typhoon. thanks Liam
Hi, Thanks... I had no time to make more scale details on it yet. Rather spent the rare time for flying.
For the gear: I've used the steel wire in the kit and bend it as indicated in the plan. But since I'm starting and landing on the gear I would build a hutch into the wing to absorb the forces from bottom. I can make some pictures and a drawing this evening. But how to send???? I used slowflyer foam-tires.

Oh, sorry..... Park 250 Brushless Outrunner Motor 2200Kv and eflite ESC. 5 g GWS servos (two for aileron and one for elevator. Rudder is not geared. 350 mAh Lipo 2S. AR600 Spektrum receiver.
Motor with far less power would also be OK. But the weight should not go much over 200 g. Mine is 216 g.
You don't need the rudder at all. Don't make the dihedral to big as indicated in the instructions. This is usefull if you only use rudder. See my dihedral on the video.
Cool- I've done U/C and free flight with Guillows kits. I bought a Stuka- that will be electric R/C- I'll use the 350 geared motor from a GWS Zero that got demolished!
Cool send me the pictures and videos when you finished the project... I've nothing to build now.... But use really light components and try to keep it around 200 gram... Otherwise is flying to dangerous for the whole work.
beautiful work, i have that kit, and you have inspired me

That plane you were being impressed by at the Smithsonian wasn't a Zero, and I tyhink the one at Andrews was a replica, likely built from an AT-6,
Nevertheless, nice build - those Guillows kits aren't exactly ARF!
NVanWendy 1 year ago
@NVanWendy The smithsonian does have a real A6M. Hangs right above the P-51 in the WWII gallery.

What is the hardest part for the assembly?
Do you think this plane can be cover by monokote? Would it be looking a bit better in there?
What is motor esc receiver you are using?
Thanks

SkinnyPuppy208 2 years ago
@SkinnyPuppy208
It's a eflife 250... but toooo much power... a 180 would be enough. I needed a heavier motor to achieve to CG..

Hi There,
Looks fantastic!
Can I ask what gear you used?
I am building a Guillows Spitfire of the same range.
