Leaving the cast-on stitches loose seems counter-intuitive to someone who's used to sewing. When sewing, you don't want loose stitches. :)

howcast has one that's a gun pointing version. So much easier! This one leaves you with the loose end hanging in your work so it seems that they are different not just two ways to the same end. So i wonder. This one looks like a braid and the other looks like a twisted rope. What the heck . Maybe i'm doing the more complicated one wrong?

Try holding the two needles together as you cast on new stitches (instead of just holding one needle, hold both needles); this will make for more loose stitches and it will be easier to knit through those stitches
