  • I use a 4 1/2" grinder with a cut-off wheel (about 1/16" thick.) Trace your pattern and rough cut with the wheel. Then you can switch to a grinder wheel (about 1/4" thick) to do your rough shaping. After that you're on to hand filing, and belt sanding. Hope this helps.

    Good Luck,

    John

  • I have several old files myself that I've been trying to make into knives but I am having a terrible time figuring out how to cut/grind out my pattern. Any suggestions? P.S. The files look exactly the same as what you've worked with.

  • Your knives are truly works of art. Genious to keep some of the file and rasp pattern as decoration. I think you should consider making the sheathes with the same attention to detail!

  • amazing great job

  • Dang those are beatiful knives sir

  • I am convinced you could set up as a professional cutler.Greetings to Kobe!

  • Do you ever blue them like a gun to prevent rust?

  • Beautiful.Working Art... Great Job...

  • Great knife. I think it came out perfect.

  • @MrJHAIII Hello,

    Beautiful knives man, great job.

Do you think you could possibly make a video on how you do that nice file work on the spine of the blade? It looks really good

  • ni370 - try jantzsupply, I can get around $175 for the smaller ones, $200 for larger ones. MrReauxs, my name is John, but my Mother's name is Pat.

  • is your name pat? and do you know any of the rowe family?

  • how much can you sell a finished handmade knife for?

  • Could you post the link of where you got the wood for the handles of the second 2 knives? they look great

  • hd.......I heat them up to temp (approx 1500 F) after shaping them, followed by a quench for hardening. Then I put them in the oven to temper them for about 2-3 hours at 400 F

  • great work! How many heat / cool cycles do you use to harden the blades back up?

  • awesome knives =) i like them very much!!! U'R an artist

  • Nice video man. Amazing knives.

  • very impressive =) hats off to ya

  • HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!

    Those knives look amazing!

  • just wanted to say that you make some amazing and beautiful knives.

  • I love the look. you do good work.

  • very nice work ! question and a comment. how well do find these keep an edge ?? just wondering why you made the tip so blunt ?

also gotta love the design left on the blades the one on the spine is ridiculously nice and how hard would that be to recreate.

  • those knives came out beautiful! i used to live in the UP! K.I. Sawyer! hope your bear hunt was successful!

  • Fantastic.

  • BurbanMilitia,

I use a propane forge to heat the files up until they are orange/red and a magnet will no longer stick to them. This is to soften them so I can shape them. I let them air cool. After shaping, I re-heat them in the same process, but dip them immediately in water (straight up and down to avoid warping). Some people use motor oil, but I was told water was suitable for the steel/carbon mix in these files.

Thanks for the compliments everyone, and Merry Christmas!

    John

  • @MrJHAIII Merry christmas! and great knives , id love one of these:)

  • how do you heat treat them

  • man you do beautiful work im really impressed

  • Smallgamehunter11, shoot me an email at jallmand3@yahoo.com

  • How much would you sell one for?

  • Excellent, unique work! Being a learning knife maker myself, I appreciate the look of these.

Though being Finnish, I find the western knife sheath rather awkward. In here we make a wooden 'holster' of sort that we fit inside the sheath. It also allows for shaping the sheath in to various forms of one's liking.

Anyways, great job, and keep it up!

  • that is very cool! the file scales look sweet! i bet that is good steel to.

  • u should try selling u could sell 1 for 100 dollars

  • Can you do a heat treating tutorial??

  • Thanks Chefslot.........Those handles are made from laminated hardwood that is stained in multiple colors. You can buy them from most knife supply sites on the web.

  • What is the last two knifes handles made from?? i love that effect

  • Realy nice sheath bro! The knife look like a hunting knife or something :P Realy love it!

  • How can i get one of these knives?

  • The quality's ok but

It's the quality of the knife that counts

  • I am amazed the video quality is great and the knives are great I am just astonished at these videos

  • You could have a new brand name...

  • Very impressive...I don't think Anyone has made a knife from a file.

    Really creative.

Did you use a belt sander...

  • I hope you're proud of your work,it isn't everyone that can do such fine construction,,,Well done

  • @MrJHAIII im new to this but really want to make my own knife. any advice? also, how did you heat and shape the steel?

  • Great blade, very classy looking with the file pattern still imprinted! Also this video is posted on my birthday :D

  • The result of some excellent skills on display here. These are beautiful.

  • Impressionante, parabéns, para mim é uma das melhores facas que eu já vi até hoje.

  • That was an inspiration and a overall great idea! I'm making one similar now, but I'm using micarta scales instead. Thanks,

  • Absolutely beautiful work. I would love to be able to make one of these great knives. Good luck hunting up in the U.P. My family has a cabin in Traverse City along the Betsy River. Please keep posting these videos they are so inspirational.
