Do you think part of the problem was that it was such a sudden change? Perhaps there's a way to gradually get into it- maybe by moving towards the Spanish type sleeping first, and then trying to split again.. I could really imagine it taking weeks to move into different patterns without causing a big shock.
i did this for 2 weeks and the result was awesome. yes i did oversleep a couple times but you got to keep going. i stopped after 2 weeks though because my old school asian parents wanted me to sleep like a normal loser.
I am trying Polyphasic Sleep and recording all my results, and how I'm feeling. I am specifically doing the Dymaxion Sleep Schedule which is every 6 hours, you sleep for 30minutes. Stop by my website if your interested in Polyphasic Sleep.
My problem is a common one - 1 am, 5 am are fine, usually 9 am, but on some days for some of the PM slots, I HAVE to be somewhere at the moment, there's no opportunity to take a half hour nap. I'd considered changing to Dymaxion (there's some debate here about diff between dymaxion and uberman) which would reduce the number of naps (and increase the time) but even then there will be one or two times in a week I have to be somewhere. What should I do?
To be honest, there isn't a vital point in forcing oneself into polyphasic uberman. Sleeping 4-5 hours a night with a short relaxation/nap can similar things, and is easier to accomplish, due to the body's own sleep rhythms and the night/day cycle.
I don't think you will be able to do that for a few decades, that is, it's not sustainable without causing some health effects/psychological problems. I believe in sleeping at least 4 hours a day, one way or another.
3 hours may be enough for your brain to get some rest, but what about the rest of your body?
Sleep pressure seems to build up consistently. You can argue that giving in does disrupt your uberman cycle, but I believe your body know how to heal itself.
Coffee is fine on uberman. Since caffine takes 30 minutes to kick in, it is recommended that you take it right before going to sleep. Then, when it kicks in you can wake up easier. Also, transition is required. I'm on the uberman sleep cycle and I have been for a month now. To stay awake, you need to keep your mind occupied. Thats why famous inventors did it. They had a lot to do. I have a lot of courses this year. Thats how I get my home work done.
@skyperox I think part of what killed me is that i was was quite a heavy coffee drinker, and then when i decided to change my sleep patterns i stopped all caffeine.
Bloggers and writers all seem to succeed with this and love it. On the other hand, the entire youtube community fails at it. WTF. I'm doing it now and yeah it hurts but everyone gives up after the first stages? Wow...
@bofinkarna - you are referring to an anti-polyphasic article. all he claims is that he cannot find any evidence, whilst bending his words to support polyphasic sleep is not possible. There is no proof either way.
Actually, he presents circumstantial support for his claims. Still, the burden of proof lies with the original claimant, so don't claim X PpS:ed without proof.
The article is not anti-PpS; it even acknowledges that PpS has its merits. Rather, it's a pretty good and deep examination of PpS, concluding that it's detrimental in most cases.
Basically, no evidence exists that PpS is possible without the use of an alarm clock (at least for the core sleep). AC = bad.
dude, i tried doing this, but only i would sleep 30 minutes every 6 hours! i was able to last 8 days.. it was hell.. i got some videos of the experiment if you want to check it out.. awesome video, love the into!
Hilarious, the difference at how he presents this show and at 7:10 a TOTAL switch. I recognize the zombie-mode he's in and the way he shook the pancake mix completly powerless, it's how i felt yesterday.
His speech at the end is pretty hard to make out and is pretty funny.
The point is that the sleep cycles are rearranged so sometimes when you sleep you'll go straight to R.E.M and other times you'll go straight to deep sleep (they both have different purposes).
This is why he couldn't tell if he was sleeping, because he hadn't adjusted to the short sleeps and was only getting the light sleep phase.
At the beginning u said it won't be hard, dude...

Very important thing we have to know, and that is: Is polyphasic sleeping safe long-term, as in many decades?

Uberman is usually 20 minute naps.
That seams to be easier and more effective than 30 minutes.
Nice video though, very entertaining.
