@taylabrain Funny how Enter Sandman was ripped off of Excel's Tapping into the Emotional Void. Kirk really hasn't contributed to the art of guitar playing as much as Dave. It's quite obvious that Dave's style of writing has become a basis for the genre. I don't mind Kirk, but he's pretty irrelevant where guitar playing is concerned, and hasn't been that original.

Dave wrote the guitar riffs for The Four Horsemen, he totally fucking ripped off Sweet Home Alabama. Some of the first songs most guitar player learn are either Enter Sandman, or Nothing Else Matters not Hanger 18 or Holy Wars. Dave helped popularized the Wha-Wha effect in metal music. And most of Metallica's riffs are from James not Kirk.

@taylabrain Even James has ripped off Welcome Home (Sanitarium). How did he rip off Sweet Home Alabama? Dave's construction of riffs did contribute to the structure of an entire genre. And about guitar, the first song I ever learned was "Seek and Destroy" and I could play the first album by ear not long afterwards. Who said Symphony of Destruction was hard? It's easier than Enter Sandman. Wah in metal is not a big deal, especially when people like Jason Becker took guitar playing up a notch.

Musically Metallica and Megadeth are still on it. In a way that did change guitar playing. They gave newer players a better and more realistic starting point. @aatefmagic Thrash is clearly not dead, as any young person who likes metal likes bands like Metallica and Slayer. Music has just moved in a different direction, and new Metal music is awesome. I think Metal has expanded and become much more diverse and versitile. Great bands range from Finntroll and Korpiklaani, Avenged Sevenfold and As I Lay Dying. In the 80's, classic rock and seemed to be dying, and in the 90's, metal seemed to be dying. This is just how music moves.

Megadeth's riffs are much much more raw an non-comercial than Metallica. Metallica became Rush. Huh? In there commercialism and redundancy. There riffs were raw in "Seek and Destroy" and "Ride the Lightening" days but not no more. And Megadeth's lead solos could and should make Kirk Hammet cry to his mamma. You know to this day I still don't know what the f__k Kirk is doing when he's playing lead solos. They are so BASE and UNIMAGINATIVE. It's like he's still a NOVICE after playing so long.
