One time I took the R train and the train was express I think and it was going pretty fast then it slowed downin the middle of the tunnel and it came to a complete stop and the lights in each of the subway cars shut off and we got stuck in the dark for about 45 minutes...Pretty freaky
There are also black and white striped panels that hang above the platform edges at the center of the station. When the conductor's cab is under these panels, then the consist is completely in the station. Either the conductor board or the panels are required to be pointed at, but usually they are together. It is easier to find and point at the monitors because of the contrast difference to their eyes when coming out of the tunnel.
The video monitors seen in the upper right corner of the video are called the 'conductor board' When the cars stop the trainman is required to open his window and point at the monitors or else he will be fired. Unfortunately, in this video, the pillar blocks what the trainman is doind, but you can see breifly that he opened his window as the train stopped.
Yes, they are required by the TA to point at the conductor board. The TA is very serous about this One time at the Main St station in Flushing the conductor did not point, and he was removed at the next station.

yeah, those striped panels let me know where the conductor is because i like filming in the middle, unlike other subway nuts.
