I don't understand? Is this book about how Harry Potter is horrible and has no right using Christian allusions in a book with witchcraft? Or is it about how Harry Potter is a beautiful Christian series?

I think Rowling is awesome and deserves her success, and I've got nothing against witchcraft (all religion is witchcraft to somebody else). The point of this book is just to draw attention to the disparity which exists in religious responses to Harry Potter.

@magicalhearingman Yup - I agree; which is why the book argues the Christian response to Harry Potter is flawed, that Christianity and Harry are equally indebted to occult/esoteric spiritualism, and that Jesus is a literary character.

Goodness this book is behind. And anyway the majority of Christians don't have a problem with Harry Potter. It's only the minority who make controversial statements - like the one in this video - that get any attention.

I agree that the majority of Christians don't have a problem with Harry; but that's less because they understand what's at stake than it is due to Christians' ability to segregate their beliefs from their entertainment choices. What Jesus and Harry Potter have in common is actually critical for Christianity's evolution of self-appraisal. And yes I think the claim that Jesus was fictional is pretty controversial - although certainly not Christian.

@holyblasphemy123 The problem is that the very statement "Jesus was fictional" covers a LARGE range. Shakespeare's Richard III is fictional...but that doesn't mean there wasn't a real Richard III. And THAT is the problem. Even I. Howard Marshall acknowledges "We shall land in considerable confusion if we embark on an inquiry about the historical Jesus if we do not pause to ask ourselves exactly what we are talking about."

@estiej Exactly! There have been about a dozen books out already claiming that Harry is a Christ-figure, which is no big deal. I'm using the meme to try and reverse the argument - that both are equally literary; there's a free review copy up if you'd like to grab it and take a look.

This is nothing new. Joseph Campbell wrote The Hero With A Thousand Faces over 60 years ago about archetypal characters in literature, religion and myths covering Jesus pretty well. Obviously he couldn't write about HP but others did on the basis of his masterpiece and no doubt so did Derek Murphy.

@estiej You're right: the interesting thing is that a majority of people dismiss Campbell out of hand precisely because he wrote 60 years ago and biblical studies has moved beyond comparative mythology. If you already accept, on the basis of Campbell and older works, that Jesus wasn't historical, you don't need to read anything more on the subject. But for millions of people, the debate still rages. Did Jesus exist or didn't he? Also - Campbell missed a lot; which is why I don't cite him much.

So, if I understand correctly, your book is not so much about proving that Harry Potter is like Jesus or any other archetypal Hero/Saviour in stories, but that Jesus is like Harry Potter - fictional? I have very little doubt about it myself but I hope you can convince the millions to believe so, too.
