@xrayrep not high voltage. High voltage plus some salt water painted onto the wood surface. Any high-current regions will dry the salt water and start carbonizing the wood. "Carbon outbreaks" start at the highest current point: the needles.
It looks like there's a laser beam burning the surface of the wood. The high voltage by itself can't make such spectacular patterns.
