I would love to see a call put out from the Queen Extravaganza people for talented operatic sopranos to recreate the amazing work done by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe. What a thrill to see "Barcelona", "Golden Boy", "How Can I Go On", etc. brought to life again in this project.

I met Marc a few years ago and when I asked him where he learned how to sing like that he told me, "From watching Wayne's World". That was his first exposure and it stuck. He's a wonderful musician and a true Christian. His band, Downhere is awesome. He is very humble and equally talented. Check out his other videos and also Downhere's too. You'll be a fan too!
Marc Martel is without a doubt the one who deserves to be lead singer. His technique is flawless, when he reaches for the higher notes there's not a single strand of hesitation and he takes them effortlessly with amazing tone and a powerful vibrato.
He can also push his voice and get a rougher sound which is sometimes needed, especially in rock.
I think, marc martel will be the winner, cause if you watch old videos, you can see he is natural, his voice is so clean as freddie´s beginings, He´s a full musician too and got carisim. may be a showman aswell!
Many other great entries, which I enjiyed. But Marc Martel sounds closer to Freddie than I imagined possible. He is the Wayne Gretzky of Freddie Mercury immitators.
One other issue of Marc vs. John (And John, I really do think you were great). The Canadian media has started following this like the homeboy gone good. Suddenly, you have an entire country aware of what is happening. It is a little bit of Canadian pride. So you know you have an entire nation votes for Marc.. (yeah, yeah, we have the 1/10 pop of US). You are both awesome.
John Anthony was pretty damn good. Surprisingly so.. And I have listened to a few other amazing singers who are.. damn good singers, but not like Freddie. But, when I watched Marc on the Ellen , I thought Freddie was back. Marc can sing, he has the moves, and plays piano. triplle threat

He seems to be a the sweetheart of the competition (he's got my vote), but John Anthony is a self proclaimed "new singer for queen" and he's not half bad... not awesome... but not bad. I have yet to hear anything live from him though, & that's what separates the men from the boys. I can tell you that Martel captures an audience's attention live while sounding amazing. Okay, not enough takers on 'Killer Queen' vocals according to the comment at the bottom of the page on Queen Ex. Remembering that I clicked on John Anthony singing 'Killer Queen'. He was okay.
Got me to thinking. Why haven't there been more auditions for Killer Queen? I think its because its a much harder song to sing. Roger is right. He needs three singers.
@Yo1969Yo I agree. Only a raw audition would be fair. It'll show if he actually has the chops. He wants in badly enough. He mentioned that he planned on submitting a video. Guess we'll have to wait and see. I still find it hard to believe that anyone can top Martel. I think everyone chose Somebody to Love because lets one showcase vocal, as it is the strongest component in the song. I find Killer Queen to be stronger in the instrumentals. Saw a video where Martel sang a short piece. Twas cool.
@NellaTorre Killer Queen if you listen to the acapella version is very difficult for a male singer. Freddie does several soft vibratos. He does all the background vocals along with Roger. As a matter of fact when I first heard Killer Queen back in 1974 I was hooked at the way Freddie sang the word "you" when he sings "she's out to get you". Will never forget how I felt when I heard Killer Queen for the first time. I was 15 years old and I just had to find out the name of the singer.
@NellaTorre Thanks for posting Marc's video in Abilene. He went off key around the 00:43 mark but other than that he was great. I'm pretty sure he is studying Freddie's moves on stage. Marc needs to correct the bouncing that he does. Of course we don't want the singers to do everything Freddie did on stage but there are a few things he can do. I saw another similarity. He has a bald spot like Freddie's. Haha!
@Yo1969Yo I see what you're talking about at the :43 mark on Abilene. He was actually on key. The band fucked up. The keyboard ceased to play and the drummer lost rhythm. LOL. There was a lot of energy and improv which is what added to the performance. Great performance over all.

Freddie Mercury is a rock legend.Queen is one of the greatest bands of all time.Their performances are legendary and there is no way that Queen as a group could ever be duplicated.They stand on high in the history of rock and roll.Freddie's voice and stage presence was remarkable and awe inspiring.I would have been honored to see them live in concert but unfortunately I had never gotten the chance.But let me just say this,Marc Martel would honor Freddie's memory and represent Queen very well.

@shawnuel Yes that was the intent of the audition i'm sure, which in my opinion is rather cheap. Technically, Freddie is actually also better, he has more a versatile range. If you listen through alot of Freddie's material you will learn this :) For example, Freddie's use of Falsetto. I do get your gist, it's just I don't agree. Listen to the power and tone of Freddie's voice, it is so unique. Marc in somebody to love for example lacks that "umph" when it comes to the main notes.

If you have not seen him performing Bohemian Rhapsody, your not ready to make such a long winded statement. Roger Taylor certainly knows what it takes to make something successful, you are certainly not in a position to predict that this will be a big success though. Just listen to Freddie do it live, there is a certain difference in POWER, tone and control that is, still after months of touring, that is evident. The "umph" is not there in my opinion, listen to the version Queen live at the bowl, that's charisma. Only George Michael has come close with STL

@bubbamcv ... Sean Slaughter has some soul for sure, but so does Martel. It's not hype, people really like Marc's audition. For a good reason, he's an amazing singer and mimic (self described in his Nessun Dorma video). Plus, Sean goes off pitch in the "ooo - ooo -ooh" just after the guitar solo. I haven't heard Martel off pitch yet.

@bubbamcv I've listened to the others. Many are like American Idol rejects. It's difficult to believe some are clueless to how bad they sound, how they have no pitch whatsoever. Slaughter can't carry the notes like Martel. Period. And of course Freddie Mercury is separate from all others. That is why Mercury was one of the best male vocalists of all time. The passion I agree on, yes he has a good voice, but for example, if one was to listen to Freddie and Queen perform Somebody to Love Live at the Bowl, it's evident to anyone with ears that Freddie delivers the performance after weeks/moths of touring with ultimate passion, charisma and POWER. I wonder whether Marc can hit the notes Freddie does after touring and other songs. Let's here Marc perform impromptu next live. Not to be convinced by 2 Qn tracks.
@mercuryforeva That is a good point. I'll say I have heard Martel on the back-end of a tour and he sounded pretty great to me. Don't know what the high notes are compared to those in Queen songs but my ear tells me he would be fine. Now....Downhere has NEVER had as grueling a touring schedule as Queen did in its heyday so it is pretty hard to compare.
@shawnuel I really don't think he could pull it off in my opinion, but I would like to see something work well for the sake of Queen. My own judgement tells me, if you are after a Freddie Mercury tribute, that Gary Mullen is the best man to do that. But unfortunately, he can't apply because he is from the UK. At the time there was nothing like the stage of a Queen concert, they owned the stage and took the audience with them on a roller coaster ride.
@mercuryforeva Hadn't heard of Gary Mullen so I youtubed a couple of his vids. Personally, I'd take Martel any day of the week. His mimicry is more natural....organic. Mullen tries way too hard....... It's really "Vegas-y". Part of the reason I like Martel is he sounds this way on his own records. He does "Freddie" up certain vocal inflections but he just really sounds a lot like Mercury whether he tries to or not. I do agree with you about the contest cheapening the memory of Freddie, though.
@shawnuel He doesn't sound like Mercury really IMO. I was looking forward to the contest actually as a boost to Queen, until the realization that it would be only in the US. Massive disappointment there. I do love Queen.
@shawnuel I take the whole idea of mimicry being natural, ironic. The point of this contest is cheap however, especially that it is the 40th anniversary of the group and the host of the contest is the US, ironically the place whom slated Queen the most. Martel doesn't have the "umph" in my opinion. Plus, Most people are going for Marc, does this suggest he is the only good singer of Queen songs in the US?

One other issue of Marc vs. John (And John, I really do think you were great). The Canadian media has started following this like the homeboy gone good. Suddenly, you have an entire country aware of what is happening. It is a little bit of Canadian pride. So you know you have an entire nation votes for Marc.. (yeah, yeah, we have the 1/10 pop of US). You are both awesome.

John Anthony was pretty damn good. Surprisingly so.. And I have listened to a few other amazing singers who are.. damn good singers, but not like Freddie. But, when I watched Marc on the Ellen , I thought Freddie was back. Marc can sing, he has the moves, and plays piano. triplle threat

Great auditions continue to come in. On drums a guy by the name of Austin from Los Angeles and a singer by the name of Joan Mercury from New York.
Since Roger wants three singers I hope Joan gets a chance.

@Yo1969Yo Check out @myqueensongs. Not too bad. I think that Martel's got the audience's vote. He seems to be a the sweetheart of the competition (he's got my vote), but John Anthony is a self proclaimed "new singer for queen" and he's not half bad... not awesome... but not bad. I have yet to hear anything live from him though, & that's what separates the men from the boys. I can tell you that Martel captures an audience's attention live while sounding amazing. Okay, not enough takers on 'Killer Queen' vocals according to the comment at the bottom of the page on Queen Ex. Remembering that I clicked on John Anthony singing 'Killer Queen'. He was okay.
Got me to thinking. Why haven't there been more auditions for Killer Queen? I think its because its a much harder song to sing. Roger is right. He needs three singers.

@Yo1969Yo I agree. Only a raw audition would be fair. It'll show if he actually has the chops. He wants in badly enough. He mentioned that he planned on submitting a video. Guess we'll have to wait and see. I still find it hard to believe that anyone can top Martel. I think everyone chose Somebody to Love because lets one showcase vocal, as it is the strongest component in the song. I find Killer Queen to be stronger in the instrumentals. Saw a video where Martel sang a short piece. Twas cool.

@NellaTorre Killer Queen if you listen to the acapella version is very difficult for a male singer. Freddie does several soft vibratos. He does all the background vocals along with Roger. As a matter of fact when I first heard Killer Queen back in 1974 I was hooked at the way Freddie sang the word "you" when he sings "she's out to get you". Will never forget how I felt when I heard Killer Queen for the first time. I was 15 years old and I just had to find out the name of the singer.

@NellaTorre Thanks for posting Marc's video in Abilene. He went off key around the 00:43 mark but other than that he was great. I'm pretty sure he is studying Freddie's moves on stage. Marc needs to correct the bouncing that he does. Of course we don't want the singers to do everything Freddie did on stage but there are a few things he can do. I saw another similarity. He has a bald spot like Freddie's. Haha!

@Yo1969Yo I see what you're talking about at the :43 mark on Abilene. He was actually on key. The band fucked up. The keyboard ceased to play and the drummer lost rhythm. LOL. There was a lot of energy and improv which is what added to the performance. Great performance over all.

Freddie Mercury is a rock legend.Queen is one of the greatest bands of all time.Their performances are legendary and there is no way that Queen as a group could ever be duplicated.They stand on high in the history of rock and roll.Freddie's voice and stage presence was remarkable and awe inspiring.I would have been honored to see them live in concert but unfortunately I had never gotten the chance.But let me just say this,Marc Martel would honor Freddie's memory and represent Queen very well.

@shawnuel Yes that was the intent of the audition i'm sure, which in my opinion is rather cheap. Technically, Freddie is actually also better, he has more a versatile range. If you listen through alot of Freddie's material you will learn this :) For example, Freddie's use of Falsetto. I do get your gist, it's just I don't agree. Listen to the power and tone of Freddie's voice, it is so unique. Marc in somebody to love for example lacks that "umph" when it comes to the main notes.

If you have not seen him performing Bohemian Rhapsody, your not ready to make such a long winded statement. Roger Taylor knows what it takes to makes this gig successful, that is over 4m views..yeah, that'll do it.

Roger Taylor certainly knows what it takes to make something successful, you are certainly not in a position to predict that this will be a big success though. Just listen to Freddie do it live, there is a certain difference in POWER, tone and control that is, still after months of touring, that is evident. The "umph" is not there in my opinion, listen to the version Queen live at the bowl, that's charisma. Only George Michael has come close with STL

@bubbamcv ... Sean Slaughter has some soul for sure, but so does Martel. It's not hype, people really like Marc's audition. For a good reason, he's an amazing singer and mimic (self described in his Nessun Dorma video). Plus, Sean goes off pitch in the "ooo - ooo -ooh" just after the guitar solo. I haven't heard Martel off pitch yet.

Has all the hype for Martel kept people from listening to the other vocalists?Marc has a great voice but what about those high notes he struggles to hit that separated Freddy Mercury from other singers. Don't forget the stage presence we came to expect from Queen! In all the videos I have seen of Marc Martel he has lacked enthusiasm and passion, what would Freddy Mercury think of someone selected to imitate him who merely sings into a microphone?Watch and listen to Sean Slaughter before voting

@bubbamcv I've listened to the others. Many are like American Idol rejects. It's difficult to believe some are clueless to how bad they sound, how they have no pitch whatsoever. Slaughter can't carry the notes like Martel. Period. And of course Freddie Mercury is separate from all others. That is why Mercury was one of the best male vocalists of all time. Listen, Martel is not trying to BE Freddie Mercury, he just happens to be probably the closest sounding vocalist to Mercury we've heard.

Marc is hitting them with EASE in live performance......in NATURAL voice, not falsetto, though he does use a false before going into the guitar solo bit. I agree that Freddie is one of the all-time best......but let's not deify him at the expense of a guy who clearly has, at least technically, a comparable talent.

@bubbamcv I agree with you completely. The passion I agree on, yes he has a good voice, but for example, if one was to listen to Freddie and Queen perform Somebody to Love Live at the Bowl, it's evident to anyone with ears that Freddie delivers the performance after weeks/moths of touring with ultimate passion, charisma and POWER. I wonder whether Marc can hit the notes Freddie does after touring and other songs. Let's here Marc perform impromptu next live. Not to be convinced by 2 Qn tracks.

@mercuryforeva That is a good point. I'll say I have heard Martel on the back-end of a tour and he sounded pretty great to me. Don't know what the high notes are compared to those in Queen songs but my ear tells me he would be fine. Now....Downhere has NEVER had as grueling a touring schedule as Queen did in its heyday so it is pretty hard to compare.

@shawnuel I really don't think he could pull it off in my opinion, but I would like to see something work well for the sake of Queen. My own judgement tells me, if you are after a Freddie Mercury tribute, that Gary Mullen is the best man to do that. But unfortunately, he can't apply because he is from the UK. At the time there was nothing like the stage of a Queen concert, they owned the stage and took the audience with them on a roller coaster ride.

@mercuryforeva Hadn't heard of Gary Mullen so I youtubed a couple of his vids. Personally, I'd take Martel any day of the week. His mimicry is more natural....organic. Mullen tries way too hard....... It's really "Vegas-y". Part of the reason I like Martel is he sounds this way on his own records. He does "Freddie" up certain vocal inflections but he just really sounds a lot like Mercury whether he tries to or not. I do agree with you about the contest cheapening the memory of Freddie, though.

@shawnuel I take the whole idea of mimicry being natural, ironic. The point of this contest is cheap however, especially that it is the 40th anniversary of the group and the host of the contest is the US, ironically the place whom slated Queen the most. Martel doesn't have the "umph" in my opinion. Plus, Most people are going for Marc, does this suggest he is the only good singer of Queen songs in the US?

No, you little children who call yourselves "Queen Fans" would understand that they shouldn't try to reasemble Queen. It would be a complete faliure cause the band was only complete with Freddie, not the Marc crap (he sings well just as well as he imitates). This is a disgrace to freddie, he wouldnt want someone some years later after his death a man who imitates him precisley become The Great Pretender and become "freddie". FALIURE OF A CONTEST.
