Graet Song! I wish the sound were louder so I could have heard what Harry had to say. Jim Henson was very talented Man. The guy who plays Big Bird is from my home state, Maine, and either Perry or Eastport! I forget which now. Harry Belafonte is a very talented singer/actor and a humanitarian. Why malign him? Just becaise you don't agree with everything he has done, doen't make him a bad person.
and what's wrong with supporting a great human being, white, black, yellow, green whatever......i am white, originally from vienna and i had the privilige to talk to mr. belafonte after a concert he gave in vienna.
can you racist NEVER stop? henson was friends with harry, he wanted him there. that nobody should wear black is related to funerals in louisiana. the deceased does not want the friends to be sad. when the saints.....
@sonjainge69 Haha, you support Belafonte but call ME a racist. That's a riot. Nothing I said was even remotely racist, especially since I was denouncing a notorious one. Please think before you comment. Thanks.
He was a civil rights activist in the sixties. He shared his profits with Martin Luther King, who made little money. He used his wealth to finance freedom rides and help others.
He Is not a black supremecist just because he had a voice.
His "race baiting politics" are from the context of the 50's and 60's. Very different time.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Tarathetiger3 Yet he's still practicing those politics today. He's just another race pimp like Jackson and Sharpton, spewing his populist nonsense to convince blacks that they're still oppressed by the white man, when their only real oppression is the Democrats treating them like an inferior subspecies by keeping them dependent on the government.
The Memorial service was in the Morning at St. John the Divine in Manhattan. I was sitting in the audience as an Employee of the company and it was a beautiful memorial service.
This was one of Jim's very favourite songs, and the Harry Belafonte episode of the Muppet Show was probably the best ever. I am so glad to see this on here.

FINALLY this is online!!! Thank you so much for posting this, I could type 1000 words for 1000 years 1000 times a day and I still couldn't come up with the words to describe the stunning combination of Jim's genius, Belafonte's talent and the power that the two created when they came together. No wonder this was one of Jim's favorite songs.
I loved this then, I love it now. One of the best Muppet segments EVER. And so touching here.

I also like the fact that he sang such a lively song at a funereal. Such a lively tune.

@shom16200 I also read that no one among the mourners was allowed to wear black, at Jim Henson's request.
