Well a plane is normally airtight. Also, this plane (airbus) has a 'ditch' mode wich is a button you press when you know you have to land in water. This mode ensures that all valves are closed so water has less chance of getting in. This plane sunk in the end, but it happend so slow that the passengers had ample time to escape.

Ity was a bit fuzzy but really captured the angle and speed of the landing. I remember thinking anything less than a perfect landing would have been a total disaster. If he had even caught a wigtip in the water tghe plane would have cartwheeled and broken apart. Or if had hit a building on his turn towards the river it would have been like another 9/11. Truly amazing.
