I love the Shendoah valley, my family has deep connections with it , When I hear this song I think Turner Ashby and Harrisonburg. The song reaches deep into the American heart. The valleys destruction in the Civil War is still remembered. The chorus sings beautifully
Way too slow? That's a little harsh. The reference standard of this James Erb arrangement is the closing credits of the motion picture "Nixon" performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. By the end of the first verse the females are just 4 sceonds behind the MTC. The men do slow up a bit more being 8 seconds behind after their verse. They pretty much stay on course after that and finish not too far behind the MTC. So, it's a bit slower but not enought to detract from the performance. Outstanding
Way too slow, i'm afraid. It's only the "rolling river" characteristic that's missing. It's rather a clumsy river instead. It's the conducter's fault, otherwise voices are clear.
Oh I love this arrangement! So very moving, takes me back in time. 22 years ago I was in an American concert choir that toured Europe with a repertoire of similar songs and we did this one. Don't pay any mind to people who complain about your singing in English with accents. We sang in Latin and other languages with American accents and nobody cared. It's about the music!
A lovely rendition of my favorite American folksong, one that's dear to my heart. I'm actually very touched to see a Polish choir performing it, and they certainly did it justice!
wow, we're doing this song at my school this fall and we did another song this choir also did last fall (Drunken Sailor). I love coincidences like that.
I sang this in my high school concert choir. This is a haunting and beautifully done version. Thank you. The song always touched my heart. Your talent has touched it again.
That was really good except I didn't agree with the way they pronounced across, they really should have used a Latin "a", then it wouldn't have sounded like "A cross" like Jesus bore, but more "ah"cross and it would have worked better in my opinion. But, they were so in tune at the end of the song you can hear the overtone, I had to run check my music when I heard the 5th above the E which they were singing at the end and when you achieve an overtone with your choir it is truly spectacular.
Sorry, I made a complete fool of my self in the above post. For some reason, I thought it was a different piece. What I wanted to say is that criticising a choir's pronunciation seems pointless to me, especially that every choir in the world will sing in various languages.I've heard foreign choirs singing inPolish and if I was expecting good pronunciation, I shouldn't even bother listening. Why do you think people who spend years studying a language still have an accent?Let the music speak instead!
It's actually good for a musician's ear to discern things like pronunciation and the like that could have been done better. It's actually a required exercise for my choir to listen to a choir sing (on recording) and then identify what they did well and what they could have done better.
It's all very well, but have you ever heard yourself singing in a foreign language the way a native speaker would hear you? Probably not. Believe me, many of the people in this choir speak quite good communicative English, but to pronounce things correct way is a different thing, let alone singing.
Whatever. They did a lovely job, the arrangement is gorgeous, in my opinion you are nit picking. Any choir sings songs in other languages and can be expected to sing with an accent.
there`s a giant owl standing behind the choir...

This is a very very good rendition!!!
I have a friend who was in the San Jose State University Choraliers and I have a cd on them, their version is off the chart, but yours is VERY good.
Do you also sing that wonderful Ave Maria by Biehl??
BRAVO!

verry VERRY beautiful rendition of one of the song closest to my heart.... my only question.... why the ascots?
buddhabraham 3 years ago
All of the songs performed at the concert were sea chanteys or connected to the sea. That's way ascots.

best rendition of the Erb arrangement on YouTube. Well done. Could perhaps do with more dynamic variation.

He probably got ticked off with that. After all, it's the most obvious one. The others are tolerable.
This performance is excellent.
