Its also good to restore serotonin after intense workouts or using mdma (not that i reccomend the latter just if your gonna do it it's good to know 5 htp can help the comedown).
Sadly, 5htp is illegal in Australia. A psychologist told me that it was banned because people were loading up on it before taking xtc/mdma. Apparently you can still buy it online from overseas. Hemp foods are also illegal here :(
I keep seeing info stating that maybe it's not good to take 5-htp supplements w/ vitamin B6, because although b6 is required to turn 5-htp into seratonin, taking the two at the same time will form seratonin BEFORE entering your brain, and seratonin is too big to cross the blood-brain barrier. So some people suggest taking B6 early in the day, and then taking just 5-htp at night-----the screwed up detail is that most 5-htp supplements seem to include B6 as a bonus ingredient! Thoughts, anyone?
i need some help. does this help with memory i took xtc a week ago and am having memory and attention problems. like adhd so to speak. will this help me to normal.
so when you are aware of the environment you exist in and its damning affects on you, you become depressed or anxous, thats normal why take a drug to stop your biological chemistry reacting in healthy way, if your down either drink more tap water for the flouride hit or face it out it makes you stronger. try and understand the situation and circumstances that affect you and that one day the condition (Not illness) will end or get a lot easyer. it helps to have a good diet, naturel produce.
Is it safe to take 5htp with inositol? I have really bad ocd and i used to be on SSRI's(zoloft) it worked but i didnt like that id gain weight and found it hard to orgasm sometimes and i hear a lot of bad things after long term use so im really trying to look for an alternative. and id also like to know when im supposed to take either one per day and how much. I have a a "Finest Natural" 5 HTP at 100 mg and a GNC Inositol at 500 mg.
In my opinion, the case is to understand how basically SSRI works, well in depression, your sero level is very low, SSRI blocks the sero from an outflow what makes it regular..however you can also grow up your sero with a diet or 5htp which is the best way in this coincidence, but it's nearly as proportional due to your depression.
Actually SSRI activity depends on your proper diet, becouse all of the neuro-transmitters finds it ways in natural factors, so the case(from natural statement) is to maximizie your diet due to depression..IF YOUR ARE underfed even SSRI will not work, and then your more depressed and we gotta vicious circle.
@VegetarianFound Each person is different in how they would respond. With most medicines taken for a long period, it probably is a good idea to lower dosage and gradually wean off. And it is always best to check with your physician when starting/ending a product or supplement.
i had an anxienty and depresion and insomnia because of a close one death ,and i was told by a friend to take those pills 5 htp 100mg veggie caps and when i was taking 1 capsule in night after 15 minutes makes me want to sleep it really works on me and im so glad because now i can sleep and after all i choose the time now when i want to sleep and taking one pill
@BobMarleyLurks but i wouldn't recommend taking any random thizz pills you find off the street, most of them hardly ever contain true mdma, unless its a pokeball.... purple transformers daaaaaaaaannnnnk
@jake42091 Yellow Rhinos (Favorite so far).. white stars (SHIT).. Green Aliens.. (Good.. but not great) Blue dolphins (Awesome.. but probably cuz i took 4 each time HAH).. Blue Lollipops (AWESOME, up there with the Yellow Rhinos).. Purple Rhinos (Bunk be carefull).. A couple others I don't quite remember.. but they sucked anyways. I also have a Yellow Maserati waiting for me.. I heard its just like the Yellow Rhino. :D Anyways just a heads up if you run into any of those. ;)
@jake42091 Thats probably one of the main reasons for making it legal and regulated. But for the sake of this vid i have to say that if someone is depressed they shouldn't go anywhere near mdma. 5htp can help you with that dark cloud thanks hangs over you on Monday, but if you are already depressed the after effects of md could break you. Chemically speaking your the happiest you will ever be on mdma, but mentaly healthy people can differentiate it with the natural happiness in sober life.
@BobMarleyLurks if used properly and non excessively ecstasy (mdma) is relatively safe compared to alot of these other garbage chemicals that the pharmaceutical companies hand out like SSRI's.
I am a recovered fibromyalgic who left the care of the medical profession to discover the cause and cure of this horrific condition without drugs, and am living proof you can cure this and take back your life. Symptoms are mistaken for the cause and treatments that help do not cure. Please, do not be discouraged by failed hope and keep going!!!
Valerie Lumley, Recovered Fibromyalgic and author of
@BobMarleyLurks Yes. You have completely depleted your dopamine and serotonin levels. Hopefully your depression is not from ecstasy abuse. A lot of people don't know this but ecstasy ruins your brain chemicals.
Not sure if it helps with my depression but take this supplement before bed and you will have the craziest dreams you will ever have. And you will actually remember them in detail which is a rare thing.
though i dont doubt the effectiveness of this product. people should be aware of its interaction with other psychoactive substances. In my opinion especially with sedatives. Weed, alcohol, barbiturates, painkillers, etc. Though i havent used it with all these things I have popped one of these pills 4 hours before I started drinking. And it did have weird effect on me, at first i was more talkative (more then usual) but slowly started feeling more empty, a sorta drunk body, sober mind effect.
@greeniem Same here, I've been taking 100mg capsules 3 times daily from the company Natures Bounty. This along with becoming a Christian and having a close relationship with Jesus Christ has literally conquered my anxiety/depression problem.
@JigsawHealth Also, I have heard that chewing and exercise produce serotonin. Green leafy vegetables! Oh and raw Cacao has been implicated to increase serotonin as well.
@JigsawHealth Read The Ultramind Solution if you haven't. It gives a very in-depth aproach to some systematic causes of depression. I am going on a raw food diet and have found that my diet is ultimately connected to my overall health. The only problem is I have not been able to stick to it this far, but this only strengthens my understanding of the connection.
As we know, there are various underlying causes of depression, and a lack of serotonin alone may not be the main causative factor. Causes can include prolonged deficiencies of vital nutrients, environmental exposure to toxins, genetic factors that increase vulnerability, minor or major brain trauma, lack of neurotransmitters... the list goes on, and often involves a combination of several factors. When the root causes are identified and corrected with effective treatment, relief CAN be found.
@JigsawHealth what you think about also affects depression. if you meditate on negative, wrong thinking patterns, it has a devastating effect on the body. negative, wrong thinking patterns poisons the body with toxins.as hard as it is, trying to think and constantly say positive things about yourself has an amazing benefit on the body. basically, we become what we think. apparently 87% of all illness is linked to wrong thinking patterns...
@JigsawHealth Hi there.. Thanks for the video. I've recently purchased some 5HTP that has added B6 in the supplement. I've read a lot of conflicting opinions about the efficacy /safety of this combination. Do you have any thoughts on this?
(finding these [causes]...) is imperative and can provide the insight needed to make progress and regain health. Your skepticism and discouragement is understandable though given your experience, but I do want to encourage you (and the others who read your comment) that there is hope.
@leopower7 - Your strong opinion is noted. But it is simply that, your opinion. While 5-HTP may not help everyone, it's not true to say that it is a placebo. That accusation is thrown out far too often at supplements, but it's very unscientific to definitively say that. Every health issue is a sign that something under the surface is not functioning properly. The law of cause and effect is universal, and disease is no exception. Illness is the effect of a cause (or causes), and finding these...
People (who are diagnosed correctly) are prescribed SSRI's for two reasons: either there isn't enough serotonin in their brain, in which 5HTP would help, OR their serotonin receptors are less stimulated/receptive than most people's, in which case 5HTP won't do much at all.
I took 5HTP, and it made me feel worse. I wished I hadn't taken it. It could have been that I didn't work my way up to a full dose, but I will never take it again, that's for sure. I'm going to see if I can find a natural 5HTP like in food.
FACT: The NATURAL way to increase serotonin in the body is through FOOD! Eat foods high in carbohydrates. Eat whole wheat bread instead of white bread. The foods that increase the production of serotonin in the brain are high in carbohydrates. Ask your doctor or psychiatrist about what foods will help in treating depression. Take care friends and good luck! =)
unbelievable! first the industry floods our world with high sugar and low protein products to make us depressed, and then some people pop out of the middle of NOwhere and want to sell some extra products to give our body, what he wouldn´t need, if only the industry would stop flooding us with carbohydrates! i better don´t use some nasty words to point out what i really think about this!
@234092z Just walk into a store and buy it. I bought some at New seasons Market. Stores that sell more organic foods and healthier foods are most likely to sell it. Even health stores like GNC probably sell it. You can probably buy it on the internet also. It's just a supplement and not illegal in any way.
@234092z Also if you suffer from depression and you don't want to take the pharmaceuticals look into other alternatives. I know this is almost impossible for most people, but getting away from the things that cause stress and being around a good supportive bunch of close people while relaxing is also great. Do the research that does not involve the pharmaceuticals and you will find many who have become better by changing some things like diet and exercise and just chilling.
Thanks for reply !!:) @superc , From what i have read recently exercise, sun exposure, and reducing stress, and a healthy diet is the only way for a more permanant way of building the levels..
@AresCassell That is very great to hear. I just got off my Lexapro, which took 4 months to half each dose til I could handle getting off it. I will be taking my first dose of 5htp. I pray this is the answer. I can't stand the side effects of prescription antidepressants, it ate up my life.
@puresickmermaid Good luck to you. It may take a day or two before you feel the good effects of the 5ht but that's nothing compared to the few weeks it takes antidepressants to take effect. Also it has been known to cause nausea and lack of sexdrive though NOWHERE near as much as SSRI's cause. Besides you could always lower the dosage without SSRI type withdrawels. Again, best of luck to you and congrats for getting off the lexapro. I know how tough that is.
Wow! I had no idea this video was being watched this often with this number of comments. Great answers all around from everyone and glad to see my folks at Jigsaw are participating.
5-HTP is paradoxical in that it works great for some and not for others. Some actually do better with Tryptophan. Trick to make Tryp work best is to take it with Niacinamide, and Glycine. A product called Perluxin also helps it greatly. Due to room I will continue in next comment.
Using 5htp or Trypt is not out of the question though working with a doc is recommended. They usually always say no though out of fear for the rare serotonin syndrome. SSRI's don't increase serotonin, they only "re-uptake" what you have. You can be so low that there is little to work with. NeuroScience can test for those levels. The SSRI is the fire and serotonin is the wood. Being out of wood is the reason why SSRI's don't work for some or "poop out". See Dr. Parkers Blog at Corepsych.
Hello. Thank you for this informative clip. A quick question, is 5 HTP safe for a Diabetic (controlling it) heart patient in small doses? I am a TERRIBLE insomniac who has tried literally everything, Or would you recommend something else? Thank you so much!
I know of no reason why diabetics can't take 5htp though you should check with your doc.
I always ask people who have chonic conditions like depression insomnia etc. WHY? It there an underlying problem? I believe for many (at least 25% of population) the problem is exposure to the toxin produced by MOLD. I write about extensively on my blog. Simply google Pat Sullivan to find it.
I really can't say. You'll have to talk to your prescribing doctor about taking 5-HTP with prescription meds as that's something only your doctor can officially advise you on.
I've been taking 5-HTP for six days now and it has GREATLY decreased my voracious appetite. I used to be a speed freak some 25 years ago and had shot my metabolism all to hell. I'm only taking 300 mg/day and will increase the dosage later, if needed. I haven't slept well while I've been on it, but I'm a swing shift worker so my days and nights are all screwed up anyway. I do have a question though: Can I use nicotine patches while taking this drug?
Once you use 5htp and get the raised affects of seritonin levels will you have to continue using it to keep the levels up or once the levels are raise do they does it stay in your brain or is it common for the seritonin to be drained and you have to keep using the chem?
i gotta question, if u take 5-htp, do u gotta take it fer ever 2 get away the depression? er do u gotta jus gotta take it fer a lil while then u dun have 2 take them and ull be fine?
WARNING: before taking 5-htp, understand that the body has serotonin receptors not just in the brain, but also in other parts of the body including the heart. When you take 5-htp repeatedly there is a risk of developing some type of heart valve disease. I am a fan of l-tryptophan, though.
I took 1 100mg 5 htp capsule last night and although it did provide mental relief, it made me have a irregular heart beat! That totally beat the purpose of using it to sleep.
5-HTP is not meant to be taken right before bedtime. It is best to take it in the morning and/or afternoon because it can have a mildly stimulating effect, as you noticed. It helps improve the quality of sleep not in an immediate "knock-you-out" kind of way, but gradually by replenishing and balancing the neurotransmitters that control sleep cycles (among other things).
Hey read my comment up there about serotonin receptors in the heart! Taking repeated doses of 5-htp can affect the heart valves and cause heart valve disease. L-tryptophan is much safer in my opinion.
tryptophan, 5htp sometimes causes psychosis. It manipulates your Brain Chemistry, so it isnt harmless. It takes over the same receptors in your Brain as Extasy does. Think about....
It's very true that brain chemistry is a delicate thing. However, 5-HTP (unlike Ecstasy) is a natural, safe, and mild way to support your body's production of serotonin, which is an extremely important neurotransmitter that's involved in the regulation of anger, aggression, mood, sleep, sexuality, and appetite. Sufficient levels of serotonin may help you manage stress more effectively, improve your quality of sleep, and maintain mental and emotional well-being.
thaks for fill me in.maybe it needs time.someone got results in 3 days and someone in 3 weeks.and whit drugs its the same.I guess my organism its capricious
what do you think about 5-htp and theanine from swanson.I take even 400 mg and I dont feel any side effect or improvment even. Can I rease my dose to 600 mg?
From what I can tell, those both look like quality products, mladen112. I do know some of our customers take 600 mg. Since you're not seeing any negative side effects, increasing the dose sounds like it's worth a try before giving up on it. If you still don't see any benefit, I know that L-Tryptophan has been effective for those whom 5-HTP was not. Might be an alternative worth looking into if 600mg doesn't provide improvement. Good luck.
There is a chance that L-Tryptophan will help even though 5-HTP didn't, because L-Tryptophan also converts to a few other compounds that the brain uses. So it might be worth a shot, but if 5-HTP didn't help you, then you're right that the L-Tryptophan might not either.
I have upped my dose to 600mg which I have been taking for almost a month now. I have noticed no improvement in my mood but I will continue taking them for another month just to see if there's any long-term kick-in so to speak. I'm not hopeful though.
Well I have been on 5-HTP for almost 6 months now, almost 2 months on the 600mg dose. Result, no appreciable difference to my mood though possibly a slight improvement in my sleeping pattern. Overall very disappointed, people must have very unique brain structures that reported benefits can vary so wildly from one individual to another. I guess I just have a thick head. I may now consider trying L-Tryptophan . Any thoughts please, I am so sick of this depression???
You are right that people have widely varying brain chemistry, and unfortunately one thing doesn't always work the same for everyone. Have you tried Omega-3's like Fish Oil? It can also be very helpful for depression. We don't carry any in bottles, but a good brand is Nordic Naturals. And, as a reference, our daily multi-vitamin packets contain 4200mg of Fish Oil. That's a lot compared to others, but more and more doctors are recommending high doses of it for optimal health. Hang in there!
I agree, Omega-3 fish oil supplements have helped me out with concentration and mood. I have been taking 3,000mg a day for about 6 months. I'm thinking about trying 5-HTP to help with the anxiety though, mine is pretty bad, and nothing besides Klonipin, exercise and a change of diet has ever helped me at all with it so far.
Great question. It can cause stomach cramping for some people if you take too much (We recommend between 100-400mg). A lot of 5-HTP products out there are not pure, which can make side effects more unpredictable. Ours is extremely pure however.
5-HTP is not a chemical, it's a naturally occurring amino acid which is found in minute amounts in certain foods like cheese and the white meat of poultry. Ours is sourced from Griffonia simplicfolia seeds so that it is vegetarian and vegan safe.
I've been taking this for some months now gradually increasing the dose to 200mg at night. My depression is still the same. Potent and powerful? It would appear not for me. Can you OD on this stuff? Should I be taking a higher dose?
Our suggested use is to take 1-2 capsules (100mg per cap) each morning, with or without food. For advanced use, take 2 capsules twice daily, morning & afternoon.
We also have customers who take 200mg 3x/day (600mg total), so you're well within the safe range right now.
Note:
5-HTP should not be taken in conjunction with SSRI medications unless under the direct supervision of a physician.
I hope this answers your question, and that increasing the dose improves your response.
Thanks for the feedback, I think will double my dose to 600mg as I have a pretty high tolerance for most things. This will also be twice as expensive but so be it. My GP did not even know what 5-htp was! I remain a sceptic but I'm desperate to find something that will work. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Is it true that if you have serotonin in your blood it can cause heart valve damage? Also, I heard that you have to be careful taking Vitamin B6 because this causes serotonin in your blood.
Is it true that if you have serotonin in your blood it can cause heart valve damage? Also, I heard that you have to be careful taking Vitamin B6 because this causes serotonin in your blood.
Sorry for the delay, after researching, I found what seems to be a helpful website that addresses this very question.
Q&A exchange:
"Q: I've heard that the elevation of blood serotonin levels (caused by taking 5-HTP) can cause coronary artery spasm, abnormal platelet aggregation, and increased risk of death by sudden heart attack.
A: That would certainly be a concern, if it were true. However, we could find nothing in the scientific literature to support these contentions."
For this website, Google "5-HTP Facts and Fiction."
It also addresses the question about B6...
"Q: Does vitamin B6 cause 5-HTP to rapidly convert into serotonin before it even reaches the brain? Does this mean you don't get an increase of brain serotonin?
A: No, actually quite the opposite. In one notable study on rats, vitamin B6 deficiency was deliberately induced. It was discovered that very little serotonin was produced in the rat brain when deficient in B6.4....
"...In other experiments with monkeys and rats, the presence of ample amounts of B6 - even to the point of "moderate excess" - increased production of serotonin (in the brain) from 5-HTP by up to 60%.5,6 Once again, it is clear that 5-HTP raises brain serotonin levels - with or without carbidopa or benserazide, and with or without vitamin B6. But the evidence indicates that it's better to take 5-HTP without carbidopa or benserazide and with vitamin B6.7"
I investigated about 5HTPand did not find it in my local market in Chile. So I aquired it by ebay, in California. I hope it works; i'll be telling you.
mladen112, Thank you for making this point about SSRI's. We make a special note of that on the website as well (on the 5-HTP product page), but didn't mention it in the video as you obviously noticed. Great to see so many people looking out for the health of others. I know it's appreciated! Thanks again... have a great day -- and best of health to you!
And what about getting serotine syndrome when using 5htp with for example paroxetine/seroxat. I've heard that taking parocetine in combination with 5htp creataes an xtc like feel.?!
I used to be a heavy amphetamine user and i had messed with my seritonin levels, using SRIs didnt help me, it was a friend who recommended 5-HTP, I started taking them every night before sleep and within a week I started to feel myself again. Lets just say I steer clear of drugs now! Great VID!
I did a bit of mdma last week and have been taking 5 htp as directed (6 pills throughout the day) and I have been feeling insanely good, is this normal?
what do you think about 5-htp from swanson?it is good?I have insomnia about 1 mount.100mg its enough?I was told to take also l-theanin.please give an advice.5-htp doesent have side effects like sexual problems?how long can I take 5-htp
if you are an MDMA user taking 5HTP as you are coming off your roll will help replenish chemicals in your brain naturally and youll feel a lot better the next morning to.
whats the difference of 5htp supplements and ssri,s depression i know that ssri,s can cause lots of side effects such as nausea, headache, dizziness, drowsiness , sexual promblems. does 5htp supplements do the same side effects.
5-HTP shouldn't have the same side-effects that SSRI's do. Although, for some people it can cause stomach cramping. And it makes some people drowsy, but it can be taken at night.
5-HTP is an advanced form of a naturally occurring amino acid called L-Tryptophan, and it's just one step away from converting to the neurotransmitter serotonin. So, 5-HTP is a natural way to raise serotonin levels in the brain, without many of the side-effects of SSRI's.
The SSRI (stands for Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) class of anti-depressants are pharmaceuticals drugs that selectively block the reuptake of serotonin neurotransmitters so there's more serotonin in the brain.
5-HTP is not as strong as SSRI's, But could be enough to help one get over a crisis without the need of SSRI's and with less risks, From my exprience up to 300mg is good, 3 portions every 5-6 hours the first one when you wake up, Less than that can also help, Even just one pill in the morning would help some people, Do not mix SSRI's with 5-htp (DANGEROUS), Do not mix with drugs or alchohol! Vitamin B6 would help 5-htp be more effective per mg.
Does anyone know how long it takes to work? I've been on it for about 2 weeks and I seem to have improved but nothng as effective as being on Lexapro.
(And no, I'm not going back on Lexapro. Not yet at least. The side effects are HELL for me, and who wants to sleep 18 hours a day and still be exhausted, even though it does lift depression - but only slightly??)
Well I'm no psychologist, but my therapist taught me that the mind works like this: thoughts => feelings => behaviours => further thoughts. Therefore happy thoughts = happy feelings etc... this is the main component of CBT
I would just like to point out that this stuff actually backfires on some people. I've been taking a 50mg cap at night and I've been feeling a little bit anxious and paranoid lately. I also wake up with chest and nasal congestion. According to Eric Braverman MD in "The Edge", there are four basic neurotransmitters and the trick is to put them in the right balance for one's own personality type. More serotonin isn't the answer for everyone.
I took 2 caps;) after hour felt like the colours and everything was sharper, like first feeling after MDMA and after about 30min. I started to laugh and felt really relaxed, something like paroxetine but much better. So must say that really work on me;))
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in the modulation of anger, aggression, body temperature, mood, sleep, sexuality, appetite, and metabolism. Too little serotonin in the brain is thought to be a cause of some psychiatric disorders like depression and anxiety.
Serotonin is synthesized from tryptophan and tryptophan's metabolite, 5-HTP. Both of these can pass the blood-brain barrier (5-HTP more readily) and become serotonin. Hope this helped.
It crosses the blood barrier, but does it get past the liver into the blood without being broken down? I know that carbidopa prevents this breakdown and therefore is used in combination sometimes to alleviate depression but you need a perscription for that. What studies show that it can get into the blood without being pulled apart during digestion?
And so 5 months have passed and he cannot answer your question because he knows fuck all about human biology and only got his information by cutting and pasting 5-HTP information from Google to make it sound like he knew what he was talking about just as he does when he talks in this video.
It's made you sleepy after taken 5htp because it's really increased serotonin which was meabolized later into melatonine. It is going like that tryptophane-->5-HTP-->5HT(serotonine)-->melatonine
if balanced serotonin lvls can help social anxiety(like sertraline/paroxetine), would 5-HTP work? my social phobia rly is awful and i refuse to brainwash myself with SSRIs and this is my last resort :/
SSRI's don't brainwash lol, it raises serotonin, which is how 5-htp works. I've taken both seperately. I of course agree more with the all natural approach since it has less side effects. I was first daignosed with severe anxiety when I was 8 so I know how troubling it can be. I have to tell you in my experience medication and supplements only help you think clear and rationally enough to solve the problem cognitively and you will be able to be without medication one day.
5-HTP wouldn't be more effective than antidepressants because the serotonin made from 5-HTP would eventually be metabolized by the enzyme MAO so it would not last for a 24-hr period.
I used 5-htp for the first time tonight and found it was incredible for my chronic anxiety, panic attacks, and general depression. Made me a little sleepy but hell, I have insomnia too.
It was freaking weird the first time I tried it. I had never felt so worry free in my adult life. I really did have a sense of well being. Very little bothered me and I didn't have any panic attacks. So yeah this stuff really works. At least for me. Everyone's body reacts differently, but I gotta say I felt like my confidence went through the roof. That's how high it all felt. This stuff is awesome.
So I finally did research on depression. So whatever.. I go to Wal-Mart and I see some of the herbal stuff they were talking about. I saw only two bottles of 5-htp left. I used my cellphone to read up on it some more to see what I was getting myself into. I finally bought it and I am sitting in my car with a bottle of water. I took a 50mg capsule and an hour later I felt free of every anxiety symptom and worry.
This stuff really works. I was very skeptical. I refused to take anti-depressants because their benefits are outweighed by their side effects. So yeah... one day I had enough. Anxiety was getting worse, uncontrollable blushing due to panic, and I felt depressed overall.
5-htp is NOT a more advanced form of l-tryptophan, it's only ONE of the FOUR known metabolites of tryptophan. meaning, if you are deficient or low in tryptophan, and you supplement with 5-htp, you will be missing the other 3, very important, metabolites.

@VegetarianFound Each person is different in how they would respond. With most medicines taken for a long period, it probably is a good idea to lower dosage and gradually wean off. And it is always best to check with your physician when starting/ending a product or supplement.

@BobMarleyLurks Yes. You have completely depleted your dopamine and serotonin levels. Hopefully your depression is not from ecstasy abuse. A lot of people don't know this but ecstasy ruins your brain chemicals.

@demoballa
Not necessarily.
In extreme circumstances it's permanent but from my experience I am starting to feel normal again.
Ecstasy also doesn't damage dopamine receptors either btw
BobMarleyLurks 1 year ago
@BobMarleyLurks Really? Says who? Because in my research it def. does
demoballa 1 year ago
@demoballa
There is no evidence MDMA damages dopamine receptors.
If there is, feel free to show me the source because I would be interested.
MDMA causes neurotoxic damage doing it regularly will temporarily damage them and doing it in insane amount can cause permanent damage.

though i dont doubt the effectiveness of this product. people should be aware of its interaction with other psychoactive substances.

@JigsawHealth Read The Ultramind Solution if you haven't. It gives a very in-depth aproach to some systematic causes of depression. I am going on a raw food diet and have found that my diet is ultimately connected to my overall health. The only problem is I have not been able to stick to it this far, but this only strengthens my understanding of the connection.
apocalist420 1 year ago
As we know, there are various underlying causes of depression, and a lack of serotonin alone may not be the main causative factor. Causes can include prolonged deficiencies of vital nutrients, environmental exposure to toxins, genetic factors that increase vulnerability, minor or major brain trauma, lack of neurotransmitters... the list goes on, and often involves a combination of several factors. When the root causes are identified and corrected with effective treatment, relief CAN be found.
JigsawHealth 1 year ago 4
@JigsawHealth what you think about also affects depression. if you meditate on negative, wrong thinking patterns, it has a devastating effect on the body. negative, wrong thinking patterns poisons the body with toxins.as hard as it is, trying to think and constantly say positive things about yourself has an amazing benefit on the body. basically, we become what we think. apparently 87% of all illness is linked to wrong thinking patterns...

People (who are diagnosed correctly) are prescribed SSRI's for two reasons: either there isn't enough serotonin in their brain, in which 5HTP would help, OR their serotonin receptors are less stimulated/receptive than most people's, in which case 5HTP won't do much at all.
virus1o1 1 year ago

@234092z Just walk into a store and buy it. I bought some at New seasons Market. Stores that sell more organic foods and healthier foods are most likely to sell it. Even health stores like GNC probably sell it. You can probably buy it on the internet also. It's just a supplement and not illegal in any way.
ladivadivala 2 years ago
@234092z Also if you suffer from depression and you don't want to take the pharmaceuticals look into other alternatives. I know this is almost impossible for most people, but getting away from the things that cause stress and being around a good supportive bunch of close people while relaxing is also great. Do the research that does not involve the pharmaceuticals and you will find many who have become better by changing some things like diet and exercise and just chilling.

My serotonin levels are really low. i had a neurotransmitter test done..
What im unsure about is how long long exactly are we suppose to take 5-htp for?
weeks,months,years??
Does 5 htp actually eventually raise optimal levels in the brain on a permenent basis?
so we can eventually stop taking 5 htp..
I known people have taken it for years, then they decide to stop. and they are back to how they started..
Do you think 5 htp only works on a temporally fix..

@bamptonbred probably temporary because Tryptophan is essential == body cannot synthesize it by itself. You need to take it from food or elsewhere.

puresickmermaid 2 years ago
@puresickmermaid Good luck to you. It may take a day or two before you feel the good effects of the 5ht but that's nothing compared to the few weeks it takes antidepressants to take effect. 5-HTP is paradoxical in that it works great for some and not for others. Some actually do better with Tryptophan. Trick to make Tryp work best is to take it with Niacinamide, and Glycine. A product called Perluxin also helps it greatly. Due to room I will continue in next comment.
golfsullivan 2 years ago

Thank you so much!
silkorganza 2 years ago
I know of no reason why diabetics can't take 5htp though you should check with your doc.
I always ask people who have chonic conditions like depression insomnia etc. WHY? It there an underlying problem? I believe for many (at least 25% of population) the problem is exposure to the toxin produced by MOLD. I write about extensively on my blog. Simply google Pat Sullivan to find it.
golfsullivan 2 years ago
I read a good article on ways to naturally increase serotonin:
1) Sunlight
2) Exercise
3) a-lactabumin
"Acute ingestion of α-lactalbumin by humans can improve mood and cognition in some circumstances, presumably owing to increased serotonin."
Copy and paste that clip above into google search and your find the article.

WARNING: before taking 5-htp, understand that the body has serotonin receptors not just in the brain, but also in other parts of the body including the heart. When you take 5-htp repeatedly there is a risk of developing some type of heart valve disease. I am a fan of l-tryptophan, though.
BahauddinMamut 2 years ago
I took 1 100mg 5 htp capsule last night and although it did provide mental relief, it made me have a irregular heart beat! That totally beat the purpose of using it to sleep.
llam89 2 years ago
5-HTP is not meant to be taken right before bedtime. It is best to take it in the morning and/or afternoon because it can have a mildly stimulating effect, as you noticed. It helps improve the quality of sleep not in an immediate "knock-you-out" kind of way, but gradually by replenishing and balancing the neurotransmitters that control sleep cycles (among other things).
JigsawHealth 2 years ago
I was told 5 htp is used in treatment for insomniac patients so I took the reccomended 100 mg at night.
llam89 2 years ago
Hey read my comment up there about serotonin receptors in the heart! Taking repeated doses of 5-htp can affect the heart valves and cause heart valve disease. L-tryptophan is much safer in my opinion.
BahauddinMamut 2 years ago
tryptophan, 5htp sometimes causes psychosis. It manipulates your Brain Chemistry, so it isnt harmless. It takes over the same receptors in your Brain as Extasy does. Think about....
bereal666 2 years ago
It's very true that brain chemistry is a delicate thing. However, 5-HTP (unlike Ecstasy) is a natural, safe, and mild way to support your body's production of serotonin, which is an extremely important neurotransmitter that's involved in the regulation of anger, aggression, mood, sleep, sexuality, and appetite. Sufficient levels of serotonin may help you manage stress more effectively, improve your quality of sleep, and maintain mental and emotional well-being.
So agree to disagree perhaps.

what do you think about 5-htp and theanine from swanson.I take even 400 mg and I dont feel any side effect or improvment even. Can I rease my dose to 600 mg?
mladen112 2 years ago
From what I can tell, those both look like quality products, mladen112. I do know some of our customers take 600 mg. Since you're not seeing any negative side effects, increasing the dose sounds like it's worth a try before giving up on it. If you still don't see any benefit, I know that L-Tryptophan has been effective for those whom 5-HTP was not. Might be an alternative worth looking into if 600mg doesn't provide improvement. Good luck.
JigsawHealth 2 years ago
What is the point in taking L-Tryptophan as opposed to 5_HTP when L-Tryptophan only converts to 5-HTP anyway? Or am I missing something here?
robinbrum 2 years ago
There is a chance that L-Tryptophan will help even though 5-HTP didn't, because L-Tryptophan also converts to a few other compounds that the brain uses. So it might be worth a shot, but if 5-HTP didn't help you, then you're right that the L-Tryptophan might not either.
JigsawHealth 2 years ago
I have upped my dose to 600mg which I have been taking for almost a month now. I have noticed no improvement in my mood but I will continue taking them for another month just to see if there's any long-term kick-in so to speak. I'm not hopeful though.
robinbrum 2 years ago
Well I have been on 5-HTP for almost 6 months now, almost 2 months on the 600mg dose. Result, no appreciable difference to my mood though possibly a slight improvement in my sleeping pattern. Overall very disappointed, people must have very unique brain structures that reported benefits can vary so wildly from one individual to another. I guess I just have a thick head. I may now consider trying L-Tryptophan . Any thoughts please, I am so sick of this depression???
robinbrum 2 years ago
You are right that people have widely varying brain chemistry, and unfortunately one thing doesn't always work the same for everyone. Have you tried Omega-3's like Fish Oil? It can also be very helpful for depression. We don't carry any in bottles, but a good brand is Nordic Naturals. And, as a reference, our daily multi-vitamin packets contain 4200mg of Fish Oil. That's a lot compared to others, but more and more doctors are recommending high doses of it for optimal health. Hang in there!
JigsawHealth 2 years ago

Ours is sourced from Griffonia simplicfolia seeds so that it is vegetarian and vegan safe.

robinbrum 2 years ago
Hi robinbrum,
Our suggested use is to take 1-2 capsules (100mg per cap) each morning, with or without food.
JigsawHealth 2 years ago
Thanks for the feedback, I think will double my dose to 600mg as I have a pretty high tolerance for most things. This will also be twice as expensive but so be it. My GP did not even know what 5-htp was! I remain a sceptic but I'm desperate to find something that will work. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

JigsawHealth 2 years ago
For this website, Google "5-HTP Facts and Fiction."
It also addresses the question about B6...
"Q: Does vitamin B6 cause 5-HTP to rapidly convert into serotonin before it even reaches the brain? Does this mean you don't get an increase of brain serotonin?
A: No, actually quite the opposite. In one notable study on rats, vitamin B6 deficiency was deliberately induced. It was discovered that very little serotonin was produced in the rat brain when deficient in B6.4....
JigsawHealth 2 years ago
"...In other experiments with monkeys and rats, the presence of ample amounts of B6 - even to the point of "moderate excess" - increased production of serotonin (in the brain) from 5-HTP by up to 60%.5,6 Once again, it is clear that 5-HTP raises brain serotonin levels - with or without carbidopa or benserazide, and with or without vitamin B6. But the evidence indicates that it's better to take 5-HTP without carbidopa or benserazide and with vitamin B6.7"

whats the difference between 5htp supplements and ssri,s .
energy088 3 years ago

You mean i will not takes ssri's the rest of my life if i took this?
R2FUK 3 years ago
I don't think 5Htp is a substitute to SSRI or should be taken on daily basis for long periods.
I believe people shouldn't be dependent on SSRI'S nor on 5HTP,
5HTP for short term use is to my opinion far less risky than SSRI's, Do not mix 5htp with SSRI, Alchohol or other psychoactive drugs.

Thanks for replying! I see my message was 4 months ago, and to update I'm still on the htp and off the anti ds and feeling a lot better now!
I started cbt but couldn't afford it :(

Mmmm thank god for socialized medicine :P
you should teach yourself, the whole point of it is that its a massive mind game, works damn well too. I can send you some more information.
7CATALYST25 3 years ago
Please do, I'd appreciate that.
saggyeyebag 3 years ago

5-htp + carbohydrates = good

so what is this Seratonin? and how many levels is it? somone plz explain
coldplayeazy 3 years ago
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in the modulation of anger, aggression, body temperature, mood, sleep, sexuality, appetite, and metabolism. Too little serotonin in the brain is thought to be a cause of some psychiatric disorders like depression and anxiety.
Serotonin is synthesized from tryptophan and tryptophan's metabolite, 5-HTP. Both of these can pass the blood-brain barrier (5-HTP more readily) and become serotonin. Hope this helped.
JigsawHealth 3 years ago
It crosses the blood barrier, but does it get past the liver into the blood without being broken down? I know that carbidopa prevents this breakdown and therefore is used in combination sometimes to alleviate depression but you need a perscription for that. What studies show that it can get into the blood without being pulled apart during digestion?

And so 5 months have passed and he cannot answer your question because he knows fuck all about human biology and only got his information by cutting and pasting 5-HTP information from Google to make it sound like he knew what he was talking about just as he does when he talks in this video.
blade004 3 years ago
It's made you sleepy after taken 5htp because it's really increased serotonin which was meabolized later into melatonine. It is going like that tryptophane-->5-HTP-->5HT(serotonine)-->melatonine

am gonna buy some, i have dpd, could help with my anxiety.

if balanced serotonin lvls can help social anxiety(like sertraline/paroxetine), would 5-HTP work? my social phobia rly is awful and i refuse to brainwash myself with SSRIs and this is my last resort :/
rofl082193 3 years ago
SSRI's don't brainwash lol, it raises serotonin, which is how 5-htp works. I've taken both seperately. I of course agree more with the all natural approach since it has less side effects. I was first daignosed with severe anxiety when I was 8 so I know how troubling it can be. I have to tell you in my experience medication and supplements only help you think clear and rationally enough to solve the problem cognitively and you will be able to be without medication one day.
guitarobsessed85 3 years ago
5-HTP wouldn't be more effective than antidepressants because the serotonin made from 5-HTP would eventually be metabolized by the enzyme MAO so it would not last for a 24-hr period.
spencerdev91 3 years ago
It might help with mild common seasonal depression, but I gurantee it won't touch serious clinical depressive illness.
Albval1711 3 years ago
I used 5-htp for the first time tonight and found it was incredible for my chronic anxiety, panic attacks, and general depression. Made me a little sleepy but hell, I have insomnia too.
rbp385 3 years ago 3
It was freaking weird the first time I tried it. I had never felt so worry free in my adult life. I really did have a sense of well being. Very little bothered me and I didn't have any panic attacks. So yeah this stuff really works. At least for me. Everyone's body reacts differently, but I gotta say I felt like my confidence went through the roof. That's how high it all felt. This stuff is awesome.
St3althW4rrior 3 years ago
So I finally did research on depression. So whatever.. I go to Wal-Mart and I see some of the herbal stuff they were talking about. I saw only two bottles of 5-htp left. I used my cellphone to read up on it some more to see what I was getting myself into. I finally bought it and I am sitting in my car with a bottle of water. I took a 50mg capsule and an hour later I felt free of every anxiety symptom and worry.
St3althW4rrior 3 years ago
This stuff really works. I was very skeptical. I refused to take anti-depressants because their benefits are outweighed by their side effects. So yeah... one day I had enough. Anxiety was getting worse, uncontrollable blushing due to panic, and I felt depressed overall.
St3althW4rrior 3 years ago
5-htp is NOT a more advanced form of l-tryptophan, it's only ONE of the FOUR known metabolites of tryptophan. meaning, if you are deficient or low in tryptophan, and you supplement with 5-htp, you will be missing the other 3, very important, metabolites.
Myaucat 3 years ago
I think he means more advanced towards serotonin
trisky1234 3 years ago
his exact quote is "5-htp is a more advanced form of tryptophan" - whatever he meant, that statement is misleading.
Myaucat 3 years ago
More advanced is not correct, but 5htp is a direct precursor to serotonin. Think that's what he means.
