I believe that in some cases, duplicate content should not lead to penalty from Google because websites like classified ads websites, often the same ad has been posted in 2 or 3 relevant categories and the poster/advertiser has posted exactly the same ad on some another classified ads websites. So what is the fault of classified ads website's owner then? Does it mean Google will penalize all of them?

For the longest time, search results for my site kept increasing until it got to about 35,000 search results and then one day it dropped all the way down to 2,000 search results. What would cause that?

Interesting I have made lots of changes in my site. Admitted to my wrong doing, gave detailed report and have submitted at least 10 reconsiderations. All responses have been a automated response saying the same thing. I know my site shouldnt be penalized any longer. I have even talked to a google engineer that couldnt figure out why the site is still under penalty. So Rachel and Brian I would greatly appreciate you taking a min or two to look over my site.

In this vid they say that the problem probably isn't duplicate content, but I seriously think this is a lie. I've had a bunch of sites with pages of original content and a few articles taken from elsewhere and they've been deindexed for no other reason I can think of.

God I'd love to get a straight answer from them on WHY a site has been deindexed.

Google can do with their search engine whatever they like, nobody's site has ANY right to appear on ANY search result page. If you like Google to index your site, play by their rules, if you like to do stuff with you site they don't like you just have to live with not being indexed on Google. Why is this so hard for webmasters to understand? Go on - sue Google for not having your site on, see who wins.

@NoirNG I agree but google does seem to have a monopoly in the web search sector and should be more transparent. The webmaster guidelines are pretty ambiguous and google don't offer any explanations for their actions. I find it hard to understand because I can't figure out why I have fallen foul of the guidelines and I have no idea how to fix the issues, or how long I will be in limbo. I think there is a communication faiiure on google's part.

I agree, that was just what I was going to send in my reconsideration request. We need to know more about what exactly happened. Google's got the tools, right? It's shouldn't be hard for a multi-billion dollar company to write a small notification tool for this specific issue.

Right now, the dashboard tells me: "No data available. (Why not?)" Clicking "why not" tells me to try a "site:example.com" search -> no results. Then in this video they tell me to wait a little while...

One of my customers sites is blocked by Google. I wonder if Google is in its right here? When i make a direct-request for the site i get no entrance: Google has nothing to do with it i think. Banning from their list is one thing. Blocking direct-request is another.

I just got penalized by Google. I'm not happy at all. If they technically forcing us to use they browser I would like some communication before banning. If the police officer stops me on the highway he always has a question: "do you know why I stopped you?" The Google's procedure shot done first and just one sentence: " In got you *****!" Hey, nobody is questioning about "google do penalizing" the question is about how google penalize and the 0 communication with the webmaster of site penalized... remember not all penalized site are spam sites, many are victim of spammer who use the ftp access or script vulnerability to inject invisible links to theirs spamsites, for exsample.

1- Google apply a ban without specific the reason, say only "check the guidelines"..

The webmaster don't know WHY is banned, SO don't know HOW to resolve exactly... if don't know HOW, don't even know if ask google to reviews again the site with chance to be accepted or not.

2- Reconsideration request: Google receive and process it without tell you if and when they reviewed your site and if and when the refuse your site again, and why...

3- If the request is refused (when you know the request is refused? you can't... google don't tell you about.

Then you have have to see what to do next...

Submit another request, BUT without insist too much (google say), but how a webmaster can understand if send too many reconsideration request if don't know if and when the previous one was checked???), you have to "change" better your site or provide better "justification" about the cause of ban, cause you don't know for sure...

The data in this video just isn't true. It might have been at one time -- but it is not true now.

The vast majority of Reconsideration Requests are never read or processed.

The purpose of this form is to fool people into believing that Google cares about the quality of search results.

The ugly reality is that Google cares about Adwords. The natural search results are a dead project for them.

The message is clear: If your site is accidentally penalized due to a Google error: Buy Adwords.

Appreciate the tips, but am still uncertain if Im doing this right. I've been diagnosing what could be wrong for 2+ months now and sent in about 3-4 requests, each with additional info as I think of it, with probaby a week between each. Is that too frequent? Is 1 month long enough to wait to see if a request makes any difference?

I dont see how its possible to batch everything up before sending when livelihood is at risk...

Thanks for the video. Please explain why you don't tell those sites you penalise a) that you have done so b) why you have done so or c) as an option to b) why you did so after the event.

The collateral, untempered damage you can cause can be crippling to valid businesses who have little or no recourse for your actions. Shouldn't you be better Net Citizens?

I had someone hijack my web site. Google put a warning next to my listing in the rankings and would not send anyone to my site. I had my site fixed, and I tested it. Then I requested reconsideration. I was worried because Id heard horror stories about Googles unresponsiveness. However, the warning was taken off within a day or two and my listings would send searchers to my site once again. So I have had a very good experience with Google and their reconsideration team. Thanks Rachel & Brian.

As much i appriciate this video its kinda vague. For example i have a site with some e-commerce content on there, this site have been using product snippets from factory. The site if nowhere to be found. Google visits robots.txt and sitemap, but no pages. Is there a ban in this case? How to know if there is a ban? In this video Google says duplicate content is no reason for a ban... makes me more confusing. Please let people know WHY the site got banned or IF there is a ban in webmaster tools.
