Using too much conditioner dries your hair out as well and NO it does not clean your scalp. That is what shampoos is for. Conditioner can cause you to have scalp problems. That is why you wash your scalp and condition your hair.
Just because you post a video didn't make you a hair expert...first obvious sign for me is that she said she washes her hair with shampoo once a week...plus she is using any product....ask the products she said she use are bad for natural hair....
@NaturallyCurly1990@NaturallyCurly1990 there is a product you can use to cowash your hair it is great because contains many different types of oils and nutrients to improve your hair moisture and shine. it also contains the right amount of shampoo to clean your scalp and hair without dying it out. it is so far the best products I have used to cowash my hair. it is like an oil shampoo treatment mirta de perales N oil you can find out more at rihefra.com
i found a shampoo by mitzani. it is from their new line, True Textures. well I have used this twice and its not bad. it is supposed to be for women with nautrally curly hair, but i used it and although its not what im used to it works.it doesn't suds up a lot so its will do until i can find something else to use.
co washing is really good. My friend always had a problem with her hair frizzing and drying out until she just started to wash with conditioner every day and then she would use a shampoo like once every few weeks. She had not problems after that.
@cloudsifter11 The best thing for ashy skin is to scrub it daily in the shower with a stiff natural bristle brush. Do not use HOT water but warm to lukewarm water as hot water will dry your skin out.Use a moisturizing body wash like Olay (that is what works for me). After your shower apply a good moisturizer to your skin. (I use Aveeno 24 hr lotion as that is what works best for me.) Scrubbing your body with a brush like that gets rid of the dead skin cells that makes our skin look ashy. GL.

Umm I don't understand. People wash their hair because there is build up of oils so the conditioner breaks down the oils. When you co wash so much wont it cause more build up? Just want to know before I start.
@thesecondclasswoman thats why you such clarify with vinegar rinses once every 1-2 weeks to get rid of the buildup plus ifu use a cone free conditioner and not very many products the buildup wont be as bad
I'm not sure what kind of alcohols are in that KCCC, but some alcohols liks cetyl and stearyl alcohols are fatty alcohols and are actually moisturizing.
Don't ever use gel, due to the alcohol it's super drying. Melt some raw shea butter, rub in palms of hands, and run though the ends of your hair when wet. (depending on the texture of your hair, you don't want to do that if you have very fine hair).
I cowashed and put some activator gel hoping to get the wet look and my hair drew up into an afro and seemed crunchy. What can I use to still maintain a softer look? My hair is really fine.
My hair is natural and fine; I co-wash 2 to 3 times a week, and used to do the gel too; but it defeated the purpose. Now I co-wash with VO5 Moisture Milk; after rinsing, I apply some more as a leave-in, and seal with EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil); gives it shine; the Moisture Milk leaves a curl pattern, and it stays soft! Good Luck - love the video btw.
@flatlanderdot There are enough cleansing properties in most lightweight conditioners to clean a scalp - you'd be surprised. Especially the VO5 conditioners. Some people cowash daily, the conditioner, combined with that much water usually keep the hair very clean. Then, according to your likes/dislikes, you can clarify once or twice a month as needed. Conditioners can clean as well as some shampoos w/o the sulfates, which only make SUDS. Suds does not especially = clean; we've been taught that.
@dollladie What ingredient have you found in conditioners that is a cleaner? I would hope that conditioners don't have cleaning properties, anyway. Their job is to supply moisture to the hair, and they do that by means of oil. If there are cleaning ingredients in them, it cancels out the purpose of supplying to the hair, and not taking away. Also, If you go to natural stores like Whole Foods, you find (I think), all the shampoos are SLS free.
@flatlanderdot I did not say there are cleansing INGREDIENTS; I said PROPERTIES, which gives the product the ability to cleanse; soap is not the only thing that cleanses, ie, oils, creams, makeup removers, etc. Cowashing is not new. Check out the "I Love Cowashing" group on the Hairlista site for added input. Oil does not moisturize; it SEALS in moisture from water/water based products.
@dollladie Ingredients, properties...When you say that conditioners have cleaning properties, they would have to have them from certain ingredients.
Semantics isn't worth arguing over. Oil does moisturize by the way. You are not getting your hair softness from water. For instance we can look at lotion. Lotion is a mixture of water, and oil essentially. The only reason for the water as an ingredient, however, is to help the oil penetrate into the skin.
@flatlanderdot I'm not arguing with you. We can agree to disagree. You can speak for your hair and what works for it; I can speak for mine and what works for it. Oil makes your hair feel soft; that is not moisture. Say for instance, a face cream/moisturizer used after you've washed your face/showered, etc. - Feels soft because the oil has sealed in that moisture derived from water. The oil smoothes, but cannot penetrate. I'm NOT the original poster btw. Others here feel the same way.
@dollladie With the help of water, oil penetrates. Just because many believe something, it does not make it so. Simply read about what lotion is, and how it works.
Also, putting on a cream, and having your skin moisturized from it does not make a conclusion drawn to be a logical conclusion.
Reading about what you have used on your skin, and how that product worked, is where a logical conclusion is drawn.
Sure, agree to disagree, but that does not make this an opinion topic.
@dollladie Personally, I don't even use lotion. I use pure oil. But, I don't know anyone who can put oil on their skin, and have it sit there until they wash it off. It's going to soak in. My bosses son's pediatrician recommenced she use oils on his skin so he can get some of the nutrients from them.
As I said, I think the method of "co-wash" sounds moisturizing. I'm even going to do it. But basics are still basics.
@flatlanderdot I think you will like cowashing once you try it. My original post to this thread was merely stating what my regimine is. And you seem to want to pick at my opinions. I'm clearly not the only one here cowashing and reaping the benefits. You get what you want out of it - or not. Enjoy your evening.
@dollladie Thanks. And, the only reason I replied directly to you was because I wasn't seeing the comment box. I wasn't intentionally singling you out.
@flatlanderdot I know you posted your views about co-washing a while ago, but I wanted to possibly put in my two cents as to how co-washing DOES clean hair: surfactants. Conditioners, at least most, have surfactants in them, which can act as detergents, thus clean your hair. One surfactant that I have in my conditioner is distearyldimonium chloride. It's the sixth ingredient in line, which means there's enough of it to work as long as you work it in to your hair and scalp.
It's the sodium lauryl sulfate and or sodium laureth sulfate in shampoos that's drying our hair out, it's a cheap soaping agent (creates the lather) and is most commonly used in car wash detergents. The original Creme of Nature in the red and white bottle doesn't have either of those ingredients I use that and it makes my hair feel really good afterwards.

@flatlanderdot Cont..
I have no doubt that the "co washing" is very hydrating for the hair, and helps it with moisture.
I'm just letting you know that
A. Oil does moisturize, and is the base of lotion, as well as conditioners.
B. A conditioner is not meant for cleaning, it is meant for hydrating(moisturizing).
