  • Admirable mentality this pitcher has. I think his great emotional detachment stabilized him from getting swayed by any other internal or external influence and helped him focus on his primary job on the field all the time. Such a true professional. Maddux is the best representation of Berra's quote "Baseball is 90% mental, the other half is physical." By mastering his mind, Greg mastered baseball.

  • im taking Maddux an Johnson only in the steroid era nobody else!!!!!!

  • class act.

  • Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz > Halliday, Lee and Hamels ANY DAY

  • truely G.O.A.T

  • I remember the days when I would turn on TBS and watch maddux, smoltz, and glavine. They were masters of their profession. Those were the days.

  • couldn't beat the Yankees :)

  • What is with the questions popping up

  • 5:04 wow what a play

  • Maddux is such a bad ass! Thanks for beating my Tribe in 95 btw!

  • PEDRO MARTINEZ 99 ANYDAY!!!!

    love maddux as well

  • he seems like a nervous, uncertain, unconfident baseball player - but god damn the numbers don't lie llllloll

  • I hate how some many people forgot about Greg Maddux alright. No one seems to remember him and hes only been retired for a few years.

  • greg maddux is great i just feel like his voice doesnt fit his body lol

  • Greg Maddux is the reason I watch baseball. I was never a huge fan of the game growing up, but seeing Greg pitch was special even to a non baseball fan, and thanks to him I started following the braves. Now he still remains the measuring stick by which I judge every great pitcher, and I'm sure that will be the case for a long, long time to come.

  • 100 percent future Hall of Famer!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have watched Major League for nearly 20 years. NO ONE. NO ONE had a better control than this guy yet!!!!

  • Maddux was amazing in that he never revealed to the press how truly brilliant he was. He perfected saying enough without actually saying anything. Perhaps as he gets further and further away from his playing days he will open up more and discuss his pitching philosophy and strategy.

  • I remember one time...Greg went to watch an NBA game. There was a scramble for the ball which caused one of the players to accidentally kick the ball into the stands and it hit Greg. Greg grabbed the ball...dunked on the player who kicked it at him and then....slept with that players wife and mother....and all the other players wives and mothers on that players team just to teach them a lesson. Greg was a legend.

  • You know what bums me out? Maddux will never write a book about his career. I'd love to read it, his memoirs if you will, and millions of other baseball fans would too. He was a master, he figured out something no other pitcher ever did, and the secret will die with him. Maybe he doesn't even understand it, and that's why he's so self-effacing. Either way, he's the most fascinating sports personality I can think of.

  • Try online Asian women profiles lushfmlk.info

  • maybe first UNANIMOUS HOF BALLOT??????????

  • beast

  • Greg Maddux was the smartest baseball player I ever saw. When he was pitching, I wouldn't follow the ball after he threw it, I would watch him and see how he reacted to the play. He never made a wrong move.

  • god the giant text in the middle of the screen is driving me nuts

  • Beautiful pitcher, and probably the greatest fielding pitcher ever. You don't win 18 Gold Gloves in your position simply by looking pretty.

  • I think Maddux is sandbagging in this interview for sure....he always liked to remain mysterious. The man was a genius as a pitcher, and he did it without steroids. A true legend indeed.

  • Maddux used to stick his finger in his ass crack and then walk up behind rookies and smear his finger across their upper lip, giving them a "poo-stache." True story.

  • would "sincere" and "candid" be understatements when describing Maddux?

  • I'm a Phils fan, and I absolutely DREADED whenever we had to play the Braves. The Big Three was just too good.

Greg is still my pitching idol. He was an artist.

  • The BEST PItcher in MLB of my era along side Glavine & Smoltz. BRAVES 2010 - WORLD CHAMPS!!!

  • greg maddux should play in the world series of poker because he never shows emotion

  • if you were to say Clemens is better than Maddux regardless of steroids you'd have to post Clemens's non-roids numbers vs. Maddux's numbers during the same period. Those are their career totals. Dumbass.

  • I love and miss you Greg!

Long live the greatest pitching trio of all-time!

  • Clemens didn't play for the Cubs for 4 damn years Maddux is better.

  • Clemens cheated hands down hes a prick. Maddux 19 gold gloves unbeleivable

  • @MRRUBBY, you also forgot to mention that Maddux made a nice catch in foul territory and broke his wrist and kept pitching. He was definitely a warrior on the mound.

  • Imagine if this guy didn't have those bad beginning season. Wow. He could have had 380 wins or more.

  • EricAnno, your right that pedro had one of the best 7 year stretch, but to say it was better than Koufax is nuts, to say Sandy was the best, most dominating pitcher of his era is under playing how good he was, he had over 300k 3 times and nearly got 400, his era in that time was lower, and he got far more wins with an atrocious offense, the dodgers offense was as bad as sandy was good,

  • Koufax pitched in a terrible offensive era, with a heightened mound and an enormous strikezone. He also pitched in a pitcher's ballpark.

Pedro Martinez pitched in an era with steroids, the designated hitter, in an awful ballpark for pitcher's, in the toughest division in baseball.

Stats show just how much more dominant Pedro was than Koufax. And Pedro did it in the absolute worst time for pitchers in the longest extended period of slugging in the history of baseball.

  • The Jays, Orioles, and Devil Rays aren't the toughest division in baseball.

  • tim lincecum will be better

  • Thank you for sharing with us your idiotic thoughts!

  • your welcome

    anytime

  • LOL when they ask about endorsements...and later on he filmed the best baseball commercail..."chicks lovee the long ball."

  • Maddux got his numbers retired with Braves and Cubs.

  • he had sick movement on his pitches

  • He could still be effective in the majors... just not effective like we're used to seeing, but effective nonetheless. GO BRAVES!!!

  • imma giants fan but! i grew up watching maddux til this very day he is still my altime favorite pitcher!miss greg maddux!thanx for all the good memories greg!

  • I'm an indians fan but I love Greg Maddux is too amazing

  • Professional.

  • Maddux was humble and did stuff quietly.

I saw a lot of him in the NL East...a true artist...so efficient i remember his complete games were like 70 pitches lol!

  • Sure he is the one of the best pitchers of the 20th century but he's also a game nerd and I want to play Guitar Hero with him.

  • Maddux is just such an affable guy. We're always lucky to have men like him in the public eye.

  • That brings a tear to my eyes. I miss Greg Maddux.

  • My favorite baseball player of all time. Maybe my favorite athlete of all time.

  • where did u get this?

maddux is one of the greatest

  • good example to ease up the criticism of zito

  • why should someone ease up the criticism of Zito?

  • Greg Maddux was the essential professional pitcher who showed he could win consistently without really throwing hard. He's a sure bet HOF in 5yrs and it may be awhile before we see another pitcher like Greg Maddux. All young pitchers should watch and see how Greg pitched so consistently for so long.

  • he should have won more, it was shown over the years that his team mates slacked off and he didn't get nearly the run support when he started --- they were overconfident with greg starting games and didn't try hard enough... if he got his fair share of run support relative to glavine, smoltz and others he would have had at least a few more 20 game win seasons - to see the break down of run support is kind of amazing, it actually also makes me wonder if he wasn't popular enough...?

  • Well, when a guy is in the midst of having 4 straight Cy Young seasons, pretty much unanimously considered the best pitcher in the game at that point, I can see how hitters wouldn't be as focused. "We're up by one, meh, that should do it"

  • it sucked, he is my favorite & at his peak i made a point of watching or even just listening to every game, getting out of work, etc. still he had 20 wins, barely - twice with 20, but with a bothersome 5 seasons with 19 wins! he deserved better!

there should be a stat, wins relative to run support or something like that, because Win-Loss records are pretty meaningless. i did a study which took some time, if nolan ryan had whitey ford's team backing him, he would have had 50(+,-) more Wins!

  • @mythid12 i disagree, i would compare Mark Buerhle to Greg Maddux. he doesn't throw too hard yet he gets a lot of wins.

  • @mythid12 i started pitching like maddux a little while ago and its true, control is everything.

  • Gonna to miss him when he retires tomorrow.

    First ballot for HOF.

  • Greg Maddux was always my favorite player even to this day. I was broken when he called for retirement.

All my buds said that Clemens and Randy Johnson was the best, of course Power Pitchers. Maddux can make a 300. hitter look like one who meets the Mendoza line.

He is the greatest Pitcher in the live ball era. I have him on my all time roster for greatest players.

  • i agree wit you!

  • How is he out of his mind?

Pedro's peak is the greatest in ths history of the sport. He was the most dominant pitcher in the history of baseball for seven seasons (1997-2003).

HOWEVER, we all know that Maddux was clearly better for a longer period of time. Pedro Martinez had a peak that even Sandy Koufax can't compare with. Five seasons of an ERA+ over 200 in a seven-year span is absolutely incredible.

Maddux had the better career, Pedro had the much, much, much better peak.

  • Did Pedro win 3 Cy Young awards...in a row? How many Gold Gloves does Pedro have?

    Don't worry...I'll wait.

Will Pedro be a first ballot HOFer? Sure, he deserves it. At the end of the day, Mad Dog is a superior pitcher.

  • I would appreciate it if you actually take the time to read what I wrote before talking about things you obviously don't understand.

I clearly said, twice, that Maddux had the better career. However, Pedro's peak is also clearly better. Pedro was the greatest pitcher the game has ever seen for a five-year stretch, maybe even seven-year stretch.

Oh yeah, and Gold Gloves are not a measure of a pitcher's greatness, jackass.

  • I never said or implied that you didn't know what you're talking about...you are right in that for that time when Pedro was in his prime, he was the best.

A pitcher's defensive capabilities are an overlooked attribute of a pitcher's greatness (although they are very minor). So, I think the Gold Gloves do merit something.

If I said something to personally offend you I apologize, there's no need to call me a jackass.

  • I apologize as well. The sarcastic questions you asked at the beginning gave the impression that you were questioning my intelligence. I apologize.

Gold Gloves merit nothing. Derek Jeter won three...that should tell you something. How good a pitcher is defensively is not a merit of greatness by any means. Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens, and Pedro all played decent defense, but it doesn't add or take anything away from their greatness.

  • You apparently never watched ther cat like relfexes of Greg Maddux and Jeter won gold gloves because he is a great defensive player idiot.

  • I do agree with you on that. Personally, I have always felt that ERA is the most important measure of a pitcher's greatness. I have always felt the CY Young award should go to the starting pitcher who gives up the least amount of runs. Not the pitcher who gets the most wins.

  • I think ERA is a tad bit misleading, and therefore look at things like WHIP and ERA+ as my main indicators of who is most deserving.

However, innings also play a small factor. Carpenter led the league in ERA and ERA+ but did it in like 30 fewer innings than Lincecum.

  • @Tajier56 era does not tell all

  • He is just so different from most professional athletes who have had the kind of success he has had. No endorsements? Did I hear that right? Now that he has retired, I don't think we will ever hear from him again until hall of fame comes calling in five years.

  • Maddux is the epitome of PITCHING. Guys like Joba, young Randy Johnson, young Clemens, those guys are throwers. Maddux is the greatest PITCHER ever. He has done more with less than anyone ever. Plus, if you look at the years he dominated, the home run era, he just might have been the best player to ever take the mound in history when he was pitching in '95. Just rediculous.

  • Oh, Randy eventually learned how to pitch...

  • Eventually, but he still had more natural ability and a blistering fastball to bail him out if he got in trouble. Maddux could never just blow a fastball by a guy to get out of an inning. Maddux was the best pure pitcher in his prime, for those 4 or 5 years, there wasn't a better pitcher in history. Not even Koufax (Koufax had better numbers, but he also pitched in the pitchers era, not a hitters era like Maddux).

  • What about Pedro?

  • what year is that?

  • I'm kinda new to baseball, I'v only been watching for a couple of years. So I don't know anything about Maddux. Last night the Dodgers lost and the D-Backs won, so I was REALLY depressed going to sleep (cuz we're 1 game under 500), so I was thinking "I wonder how fast maddux's fast ball is".... The whole night I was having nightmares that his fast ball was mid 80's and we were losing another game. I woke up and tried to redeem that nightmare by finding out how fast he really throws.... (Cont.)

  • (Cont.) I found out the nightmare was true! - He throws mid 80's!,.. I like pitchers like Joba Chaimberland, (100 miles an hour, with a 75 mile an hour curve!). Well, Maddux is going to pitch for us on Friday, lets see what happens.

  • ryan howard, chris coste, and chase utley

  • Pitching speed isnt everything. He once threw 93 MPH, but has won cy young awards when he barely threw 90.. Its not about velocity, its about changing speeds and location. He is now 42 afterall, he's not going to be as dominant as he once was, but he never touched a steroid and he has the most wins of any pitcher in the modera era.

  • you are so stupid its a joke

  • how is he stupid? It's fact. Look at Clemens, he started out real strong, then dropped off significantly, then magically got great again, not exactly a coincidence. Maddux, started out as a phenom, won four straight Cy Youngs, something I think only 3 people have ever done, has won 15 games a season more times than Cy Young, and has done so without ever being overpowering. THAT is pitching, not being blessed and throwing 98, that's throwing, Maddux was a true pitcher.

  • Only two people have done it, Maddux and Randy Johnson. Maddux has two brains, one in his head and one in his arm. Maddux knows EXACTLY what to throw and EXACTLY when to throw it. I have watched Maddux ever since he was with the Cubs, and in his first years he was a "thrower". He threw hard, something he didn't even do in high school. He was MORE dominating than Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens, and Nolan Ryan with a fastball more than 10 miles per hour slower. Movement over speed.

  • why did you write so many comments? and angle? lets go tard

  • Thanks so much for posting this you don't know how much it means for me to see this I love maddux
