The kid hasn't had a sex change operation yet but if somewhere down the line he chooses to take hormones and get sex change surgery, that's his choice, not yours. According to what modern science thinks, girls and boys have different ways that brains function, to put it simple. A great book for you to look into is "Why Gender Matters." So far, while I have high doubts about some things in the book, I think that it's as far as modern science has gone for now. If you want to know what I personally think, reply to this saying so. I'll be more than happy to share what I think.

I suggest you review the results of the studies on brain structures of cis and trans women, as well as research on chemical interactions of hormones which help shape the brain structures and masculinize the brain in the womb, which occurs separately from development of the primary sex organs. Gender identity is separate from birth sex, and young children know their gender identity as early as 3-4 years old.
I wish I had had the guts to tell my parents like she did when I was her age. I think I already knew it back then (I'm ftm). Would've saved me a lot of time, and maybe, pain. I admire her mother. It's not easy to go that way in a society full of ignorant people.

The general public doesn't know much about transition protocals or correct terminology. Many people associate the term "sex change" with surgery to physically alter one's genitalia. The early posts in this thread show the absolute ignorance on this subject. It amazes me how those who know the least always say the most. This is a girl, NOT a boy. Surgery in not the beginning, or the end of one's transition, and isn't even the main event. By recieving treatment now, she is going to go through female puberty, NOT male. If I had been allowed treatment at 8, I'd be $20,000 richer today, and a lot less stressed, because I would have no little male attributes on my face or body.

@Pirochiro yes, kids who have the approval of a therapist and at least 1 parent can start hormones at the same age they would normally get the wrong hormone. She will also be on androgen blockers.

@esya1987 Don't make judgments on the mother. She is doing what any loving parent would do -- understanding her child's birth defect. The kid hasn't had a sex change operation yet but if somewhere down the line he chooses to take hormones and get sex change surgery, that's his choice, not yours. Also, why should it matter if you date someone who was previously a boy when you obviously find him attractive as a girl? If you like someone, you like them. You don't need to repress your feelings.

Can someone explain to me how trangenderism works? No, I'm being serious, not a jackass. I'm a lesbian, so obviously I'm care for LGBT issues, but I really don't get it. Reading the comments and you guys are like, "She's not a boy and has NEVER been a boy! She's a girl!" How can you have XY chromosomes and not be a boy? I don't really understand the whole "I was born into the wrong body" thing. I don't necessarily understand the claim of "female brain" in "male body." Help please? Thanks all!

According to what modern science thinks, girls and boys have different ways that brains function, to put it simple. A great book for you to look into is "Why Gender Matters." So far, while I have high doubts about some things in the book, I think that it's as far as modern science has gone for now. If you want to know what I personally think, reply to this saying so. I'll be more than happy to share what I think.

I suggest you review the results of the studies on brain structures of cis and trans women, as well as research on chemical interactions of hormones which help shape the brain structures and masculinize the brain in the womb, which occurs separately from development of the primary sex organs. Gender identity is separate from birth sex, and young children know their gender identity as early as 3-4 years old.

The general public doesn't know much about transition protocals or correct terminology. Many people associate the term "sex change" with surgery to physically alter one's genitalia. The early posts in this thread show the absolute ignorance on this subject. It amazes me how those who know the least always say the most. This is a girl, NOT a boy. Surgery in not the beginning, or the end of one's transition, and isn't even the main event. By recieving treatment now, she is going to go through female puberty, NOT male. If I had been allowed treatment at 8, I'd be $20,000 richer today, and a lot less stressed, because I would have no little male attributes on my face or body.

Just because someone's TG, doesn't mean they'll get the surgery... now, later, or ever. TG doesn't mean you always want the surgery; TG just means you recognise within yourself who you really are, and whether that ever shows 100% on the outside or not is up to the individual.
I'm thrilled to hear about this mother who's accepting of her daughter no matter what, and I find myself really wishing more parents could be like Katie's.

One thing I'd worry about is that puberty's going to force some unwelcome changes on her. Are kids even allowed hormone therapy if they're transgender?

@Pirochiro yes, kids who have the approval of a therapist and at least 1 parent can start hormones at the same age they would normally get the wrong hormone. She will also be on androgen blockers.

wait. the boy wanted to be a girl and at the time of the show, he was living as one. you're talking about a show called 20/20. it was hosted by barbara walters and that show was all about transgendered children. the boy's name was richie and his girl'name is riley (which to me also sounds boyish because the only riley i know is a little boy). anyway, he didn't actually cut off his penis but he tried to. i think his mom said he was three when that happened.
